Forget those YouTubevertorials. Google is no longer joking around when it comes to turning YouTube into real business that, you know, makes money. YouTube on its own would rank as the second largest search engine after Google. And you know what? Google has already figured out how to make money from search. You sell the top results to the highest bidder.
YouTube has long resisted selling search results, but it has now caved in. Now anyone can promote their YouTube videos for specific search keywords on a pay-per-click basis. This should generate substantial new revenues for Google. YouTube has a lot of search inventory. (Viewers search on the site more than 2.5 billion times per month). This should also generate a lot more spam results.
Google likes to pretend that paid search ads can be just as relevant as organic search results. And in the text world that is sometimes true. But when it comes to video, the sex factor gets magnified, and what you end up with half the time are sex videos no matter what the search term happens to be.
For instance, when I did a search for “sports”, the second top sponsored result was for “WWE Divas, Sexy Sports Girls.” (See screen shot above). I don’t think the girl in the video it links to (titled “Sexy Webcam Girl Hot Babe Big Boobs Huge Tits Nude Ass Gorgeous Butt Glamour Model “) is really a wrestler. YouTube prohibits ads for actual pornography, but videos with girls simulating sex in bikinis is okay.
It doesn’t really matter what the search term is, videos like that are going to get a lot of clicks. There are already plenty of videos like that on YouTube. Now they are going to become even esier to find.

So much for user-generated content. I hope they keep the advertorial space minimal or else users are just gonna plain ignore the ads. I think this will have a much more negative impact than the youtube team originally intended.

This sucks. YouTube’s gonna look back and realize that this was a horrible idea. Although monetization is obviously good and necessary, doing it at the expense of your user base is counter-productive. This will only make YouTube users more annoyed with the service and have them start to turn to other sources to pass their time.

It has been awhile since I have visited YouTube. What I found was a complete disgrace. After reading this article, I searched a few subjects my 10 year old daughter is likely to search. For “black lab” I was greeted with a text ad proudly displaying “XXX…” and linking to a hardcore website where nothing is left to the imagination. The same can be said for many other search terms. What a disaster and to be sure none of this could be tracked to my browsing history . So much for Google’s “do no evil” credo.
Don’t know if previous searches has an impact on the results, but I didn’t get any porn results on a search for “black lab.” I rarely have get porn results on my searches except when I’m looking for gymnastics stuff to show my daughter.

I think the article is grossly unbalanced. Having a farily clearly labelled ’sponsored video’ area in no way hinders the usefulness or accurateness of the organic search results. This is the same model as Google and Yahoo and MSN use. Pay-per-click. Relevant ads besides organic results. And it works! Google controls relevance. It penalises your ad if it is not relevant to your chosen keywords, and bases your cost on click-thru-rate.
In my experience, paid adverts get you to more serious companies, since only a serious company would advertise. Sure - if you are searching for cartoons or porn then not necessarily the case. Just cos you don’t click on em doesn’t mean the billions who do are wrong.
I mean really, people get the whole world’s media at their fingertips for no cash outlay, and then complain about a box in the corner with ads? Do you think Google should operate for free?
video advertising is a huge business, no doubt that at google they will fix the little porn problem to serve more relevant add.
I guess it is only a natural change. Google has done it for years on search.
So finally they cave in. This could work against google though, they’re eating off the very thing that’s made youtube popular, user generated stuff. Now we gonna see stuff that we dun really wanna see. I guess it was needed, but im flabbergasted at how they couldn’t find another way to monetize!

I think Erick got this all wrong. Google never has sold or will sell results. They sell sponsored links. You know that whole PPC thing that helps them generate revenue. They clearly mark that it’s an ad and never play with their organic search results for revenue.
Stop spreading false information since you have no clue how this works.

I’ve been saying that Youtube should do this for over a year. The problem is exactly what you said though. Youtube does not seem to know the line between porn and “almost porn”.

It was a matter of time. Google is extremely successful with Adwords, makes sense they would create a similar type of system with Youtube. Sounds like this may be what it takes to make money. Users already are used to seeing feature ads so to see featured videos seems like the next step.

it’s subtly different from google/other text search in that it’s more intrusive because the video ads occupy more space than text links. so it takes slightly more time to find where the results start from in the page. it may be annoying if you need to scroll down every time.

I thought they were already selling Text Ads next to videos. But video search ads are more like Billboards and a more powerful tool to market your business. This will replace television as the go to spot for Commercials. I imagine a higher presence of super bowl quality commercials on youtube.

I agree with folks that this is a very smart move by YouTube.
Google = thé Internet Search engine (the mother of all)
YouTube = thé Video Search engine.
No doubt the design of YouTube search results will be simplified in the coming month as part of this process (in line with Google’s search results style: simple and uncluttered).

Youtube, as we know it, will soon be dead. Organic results replaced by pure shit. Just like Google, you will soon have to dig through tons of junk - commercials, porn, scams, etc - before you find anything good.
