    Come now Rose,
    You would think someone with your sophistication and income would have already purchased in a padded laptop shoulder bag - designed to protect it against such accidents.

    Of course you can still just use THE OTHER ARM to cushion a fall if you are holding the laptop in a briefcase.

    But of course, this gets him invaluable media publicity to come on the air without theatrical makeup and with a band-aid

    How much would all this publicity he will eventually get for his show have cost him?!

    Well, I suppose this confirms what other MacBook Air owners know (self included) that despite what various geekfixated self proclaimed “experts” and “pundits” have declared, the MacBook Air is really loved by its owners.

    But, who ever expected a Geek to understand why normal people buy consumer products. Ever ask one to pick out a pair of shoes, a TV, a toaster, a piece of art? I rather doubt it.

    The more interesting and useful a product is to the majority of consumers, the less interesting it is to the Geek. (self included)

    Charlie Rose is amazing. When I watch other interviewers (which is pretty much only often enough to remind me of how bad they are) on channels like CNN, MSNBC, etc, they just seem like some sort of circus act. Charlie Rose has class.

    I’m really sorry to see his black eye! And nobody better dare make fun of this guy!

    hmmm, very suspicious. a poster on Yahoo Answers says that there was a YouTube video of him persuing someone in a heated Q&A (probably for 60 Minutes) and they swing and he falls to the pavement.

    though they say the video has been removed now.

    not sure his Air story isn’t …hmmm…full of air?

    The people counseling Rose on how to fall obviously have not had the experience. Using another body part to try to save his face would likely have resulted in a broken shoulder, arm or hand. In my worst fall, it was my hand that took the brunt. Months in a cast and brace, more of physical therapy, and it still has problems. (My MacBook Pro, in a shoulder bag, emerged unscathed.)

    I haven’t fallen while carrying my MacBook Air, but I think that it would probably come through.

    A Gadget’s Perspective

    Orbit AI being a gadget himself of gigantic proportion applauded Mr. Rose’s gallant decision. Orbit having a brain the size of a small planet whirred and wobbled his iridescent plates a little pompously saying that Mr. Rose’s handsome features could repair themselves, but as sure as eggs are eggs “The Macbook Air” would have bought it big time on the sidewalk.
    The IM (Intelligent Machine) Harmony Motors from XL5 purred warmly in agreement adding sagely that anyone taking a tumble… their very first concern laying face down in the dirt was to check with some urgency that the mobile was still in one piece.
    Yes, the Xl5 onboard ‘XtraReal ™ Cine Monitors’ have now replaced their looped reruns of ‘Battlestar Galactica’ with a multi-panelled display of Mr. Rose’s shows. Yes indeed it seems the gadgets have gained a new hero in the “Name of The Rose”.

    I just watched Mr. Rose’s shows tonight and stunned too. I totally agree with you “JD Lasica” and I was wondering what happen? I must miss it or he didn’t even open up the show by explaining what happen to his black eye? I don’t know why he didn’t disclose his tripped in a pothole and laugh about it. Viewers must be thing he was punched by some one?

    If I were you Charlie, I’ll do the same thing though. For almost a $2000 notebook, who wouldn’t get hurt to protect it? Maybe he bought MBA with SSD, so that’s why he cares about it so much, haha. Anyways, bravo Mr. Rose!

    My new Nokia N95 is nestled on my right hip in a padded holster. If, say, someone was shooting at me, I think I’d reflexively turn so my left side is facing the oncoming bullets. Because knowing my luck, if I turned the other way, the first bullet would pass through this gorgeous piece of machinery (the N95) AND my hip as well, adding unnecessary insult to injury. At least if I save the N95, I can live stream the ride to the hospital, making Scoble proud.

    I saw the show last night and did a double take when I noticed the eye. I thought for sure that someone must have punched him and I didn’t what to make of the whole “I fell and hit pavement” explanation. I think I understand now, he was just protecting his investment.

    And that was a great first segment on Bear Stearns…

    I missed the first 10 mins or so of the show, so I’m not sure if he may have mentioned something in the beginning or not. He didn’t mention it throughout the rest of the episode. I have to respect his openness though, most other TV personalities would have caked on the makeup, but Charlie just keeps going on like nothing happened.

    Hate to interject in this lovefest. But Rose is a too strongly biased political operative to be a PBS interviewer. His whole body language and manner of speaking and questioning is different when he is interviewing his favorite left wing folks than when he tosses in an occasional non-leftist for interviews. You can read Rose’s ideology like a Dick and Jane book.

    You are absolutely correct, Larry. Rose may pretend to be a decent human being, and may even believe himself to be a liberal, but his obvious affection for conservatives and clear disdain for liberals are impossible to disguise. The man is a right-winger, pure and simple. And quite religious to boot. Very typical of PBS denizons these days, unfortunately.

    Hate to be the bearer of bad news for all you Mac fans out there, but Charlie Rose did NOT get his black eye that way. In fact, he recieved it in a fistfight during a St. Patty’s day altercation in a bar.

    Yup. It was covered up because none of the producers want to know that Charlie Rose, he of the cool level head and intelligent decisions, got drunk and got his ass kicked.

    Obviously there’s no way for me to prove it, and the only way I know of this is because I have a friend who was IN the actual production meeting trying not to crack up as the higher-ups tried to figure out a decent story to cover it all up…

    While I’m humored at the “Free Press” for Apple and the MBA, the comments here make it sound like no one has ever dropped anything.

    If you’re carrying something that *you* value, but then start to drop it, its only natural to try to make a catch. Sometimes, we simply make a bad choice in that split-second.

    as for Charlie’s reporting quality:his obvious bias in politics disminishes his potential, his style sometimes distracts the focus of the issues.
    At his best in culture, arts and science topics. At his worst when discussing politics with “expert analysts”. Or when loses control of the interview (Ahmadinejad’s interview). But still, he is better than most in TV.

     I did something similar to save my computer monitor while falling down stairs. Saved the monitor by letting the monitor fall on my thigh, had to have knee surgery. I was insured; the monitor wasn’t.

     HOGWASH! I don’t believe he was walking on 59th St. with a naked laptop unless he had so many rumpled papers in his briefcase that there wasn’t 7/8″ left for the laptop…

     If he does have a laptop, Miss Manners suggests that he put it to good use, lose the noisy papers, and keep his hands on the keyboard while speaking.
     His guests would probably appreciate it, and Miss Manners would, too.

     Listening to occasional radio and TV controversy about it is why I said that. He raised the stakes, raised the topic to an intellectual level, not just to one of handouts. I too wish him luck.

     Interesting that as I caught a bit O’Reilly, he was pointing out how this had badly hurt Obama and Hillary was getting well ahead. I flipped to CNN which said that Hillary would probably never catch up, just the opposite. I’d noted in weeks previous that O’R was very supportive of and kind to Obama, and I was waiting for him to show himself playing possum and come out and try to reduce Obama to his size. He’s trying. I think whichever Dem is leading he tries to skewer. No spin, indeed!

     Hillary’s bright but a hack pol. He’s actually capable of original thought. But he never did answer how he stood there for 20 years saying zilch about some challenging pastor commentary and that’s the controversial part. –???

     I was channel surfing and ran across his show and was wondering what happened to him. Thanks for the warning; I’ll stay off of 59th street. But I would do the same for my MBA. I mistakenly left mine in a Starbucks last night and became the worst road hog in town going back to get it. Weird thing is, I made up my mind on the way that if it wasn’t there when I got back, I was going to buy a replacement the next morning. Serious love.

     Mr. Rose Has Got to be one of the most annoying interviewers of All time. “I’m trying to understand…just let me understand…” blah! I get angry just thinking of quotes. Ofter I have fantasized sitting across His table and, yes giving him a shinner! I can see him running into a plastered Christopher Hitchens. What fun. Somebody please youtube it!

     am not particularly a fan of mr. rose, but falls on concrete with subsequent identical injuries to my face began for me when I was about his age so I do not suspect fisticuffs were involved!!!!

     There can’t be a nicer guy than Charlie but I’ll be damned if I am going to hold onto a peice of technology worth maybe $1,500 to have a face like that. As much as I really like Charlie Rose that was certainly a foolish split-second move. Years back I had just about done the same thing but with a different type of electronic which would have broken,the difference being I was quite poor at that time so I took the broken nose but saved 2 grand

     Now, after a very busy week, I find out what happened to Charlie Rose! I saw his show last week, with no explanation as to how he got that shiner and the bandaged head. My eye hurt watching him. Now there’s a sense of priorities, saving the MacBook Air over potentially cracking your skull. I do admire him for going on-air as though nothing had happened and just doing his job. Props to Charlie!

     Like everyone else, I was shocked by Mr. Rose’s injury but I truly understand. I have a Mac Book Pro laptop, Mac Pro desktop topped out at 16GB of RAM and an iPhone. I would gladly take one to the face to save my tech babies. Bruises Heal. Laptops and desktops don’t.

     Very few people know that Charlie has a problem with touching other men’s wives…. I’m serious, he grabbed my wife’s behind at a party last year in Manhattan. I believe he picked up this black eye by a guy with a little less anger management.
