October 2008 will be remembered as the time in which the credit crunch came to a head not only for the economy as a whole but for the tech community in particular. Startups have begun preparing themselves for a bleak and uncertain economic future by cutting costs and focusing on efficiency. This has been achieved most obviously through layoffs, which can reduce burn rates quickly and dramatically for web companies that require little physical capital.
We've begun tracking all of the relevant layoffs in the tech sector below. If you know of any that have been overlooked, please submit a tip using the form below.

ST-NXP wireless venture to “rationalize”, cuts 500 jobs
I like what Barry Diller said…
“The idea of a company that’s earning money, not losing money, that’s not, let’s say ‘industrially endangered,’ to have just cutbacks so they can earn another $12 million or $20 million or $40 million in a year where no one’s counting is really a horrible act when you think about it on every level. First of all, it’s certainly not necessary. It’s doing it at the worst time. It’s throwing people out to a larger, what is inevitably a larger unemployment heap for frankly no good reason.â€
Perhaps, at last, we are giving a thought to being human. We are also thinking of education, learning, better living and so on. I rememeber a slogan at Sun:”People sell to people.” Business done with the exclusion of commitment to people is not sustainable and the events of these days are proving that.
I think the economy is deflating for good after two bubbles – the internet bubble and now the real estate/financial bubble. The truth of the matter is many businesses were relying on credit for years just to keep going. The economy in general has undergone a lot of structural changes the last 10 years. I suspect that, until we get a new paradigm shifting technology that creates millions of jobs, the employment outlook will be weak in the months and years ahead. As the economy continues to contract, I expect those profitable companies will continue to cut in order to finance the lifestyles of a few at the top.
French eBay employees took it with a smile .
They made a video clip of it.

It seems that http://www.layo...sthisyear.comis trying to keep up with this escalating number
TI has started layoff in India as well, though they don’t call it layoff.
Employees are laid off quitely with ZERO severance.
Do you want to work for such un-ethical company??
ST-nxp wireless has been transitioned to full ST Microelectronics, around 1,200 will be out by end of March 31,2009 via management decided separation program
For the company, it is just easy to get to “metric management” by instantly cutting headcount. It is a short-term measure, and no solution at all. It is like shuffling tables on the deck of Titanic.
LanAmerica layoff 120 employees. http://www.inri...11-04-0094.html
Goldman sacs laid off 3200
Imation to layoff 200.
BT to cut 10,000 instead of 1,000.
See also CNET’s list of layoffs’ (http://news.cne...om/tech-layoffs) started in Oct. but this one has more info.
The hiring link here points to cruchboard which seems to be a paid service not like what CNET has, which is free and community driven.
Thanks.
The silver lining in this is that emerging startups have a chance to find great talent that is flooding the market, certainly not enough to make up the difference but there will be some golden opportunities out there.

Dell’s 8,800 started last year, and end this year. Not sure why they are included in this list.
The layoff targets for 2009 will blow your mind.
The Silicon Valley has never seen these rapid, and sever job losses.
Tallan inc ,layoff 7 techies today
“The Silicon Valley has never seen these rapid, and sever job losses.”
Oh really? What about in 2000-2001? The US tech sector is on track to shed 180,000 jobs in 2008, the most since 2003’s 228,325. But nearly 700,000 were lost in 2001. We’re nowhere near that level this time around. Yet.
The lay-offs in India also seems going higher with companies like wipro, satyam, laying-off people…..also the aviation industry has seen a lot of down-sizing….the contribution of government seems quite supportive but companies dont seem to be delegating this benefit down the line……. i read these comments on http://www.viewsnest.com it really is fumigating
Bunn,
NewTV.com was talking about 2009, not this year.

“Total Layoffs Since August 27, 2008: 231”
Huh? How do all those thousands add up to 231?
read carefully. 231 is the total no. of layoffs not the total no. of employees.
Ah… “layoffs”. As in one “layoff” can result in 1,000 people “being” laid off.
I still think of layoffs in terms of people.
Indeed it is hard times for the tech industry. Discretionary spend (CapEx) is completely cut, and everyone bunkers down to ‘keep the lights on’ (aka Operational Expenditures aka OpEx).
Surely a great time to have contracts with the government.
I’m also wondering about the Google rumor that @AM linked to. I’m skeptical. Here is PC World’s take: http://www.pcwo...ort_claims.html
Layoffs tracked at

Too much of Israel…
Sun Microsystems is listed twice, on two different days from different sources with the same number. Does this mean it’s 10k people or just a dup?

Today the short man eliminated 10% of the workforce at control4. Based on low sales and the “economy” – stated in company meeting that most new products are put on the “back burner” until market increases.

I’m not sure how the new government is going to handle it. Even hearing that after current crisis, the credit card bubble is about to burst.
Navis (a Zebra Technologies) to layoff IT folks. H1B visa holders are also affected.

Thanks for this page, sad to see so many people going.
BTW! Would it be possible to add sorting facility in above table? Technically yes, but can you please do it, so we can sort by header-columns?
Thanks

If you’ve been laid off from the tech industry you can add a simple profile so employers looking for talent can find you.
Bank of America to cut up to 35,000 jobs
Netapp December 9, 2008 Israel 51 100%
Umm… better clarify that you’re obviously not meaning “NetApp”… ya know, the one with over 8,000 employees.
If this is “NETAPP ISRAEL R&D” (a subsidiary of NetApp) then it’s more like 0.006% rather than 100%.

It’s so sad. I really hope that the layoffs slow down. It seems like every day I am hearing that another company is laying people off.
testing
The situation is tough, no doubt. However, I think that some helthy and profitable companies are jumping on the opportunity of firing some people and making 2 employees do the work of 4…
Is this ok? well… it is, if you have employees who are not committed to your company and should be let go anyway.
I think my comment wasn’t posted, so writing again:

Well, all those techies should at least be happy that they have running water, proper shelter, and that they don’t get blown up by suicide bombers or American missiles when they go to the market or have a wedding.
another way of tracking layoffs on a map in real time… goto http://www.trackthisnow.com and type in layoffs
I searched in the map
only countries where there are no layoffs – russia, mongolia and kazakhstan..
IBM is constantly cutting employees. They do it quietly. See the job cuts comments at http://www.allianceibm.org
I’ve been working a good few years, technology is a tough way to earn your living… however most companies carry up to 20% of staff who are lazy or contribute little.. fact… look around you, stop and think who only talks the talk… as log as it’s these guys who are geting busted out eh!
You might be next. There’s no demand so it doesn’t matter how your job performance has been. The fats already been trimmed now they’re cutting into the muscle.
Wouldn’t that be great if they only laid off the people that didn’t pull their weight? Now, look aroudn you after a layoff. How many of the good people that you count on are gone and how many slackasses remain? I work for Sun, so I’ve been through about 15 layoffs int he last ten years. Never seen the truly deserving (the few there are) laid off. And you can’t say 20% of the company is lazy since some of the people I’ve seen laid off are the ones putting in 80 hour work weeks and holidays and Sun has laid off more employees than they currently actually employ.
Wow! This is one of the coolest and most depressing tool i’ve found online. I was laid off back in early November and have since started a blog about the lifestyle of the laid off. It’s more of a community of laid off expression.
If you’ve been laid off, perhaps you’d like to contribute!

Really nice tool…
