Microsoft is trying anything to get you to use Live Search. And now it's time to add another to its attempts to try to pay you to use its service.

Dubbed SearchPerks, Microsoft's latest scheme gives users points when they use Live Search, which can be redeemed for prizes. Users who sign-up before the December 31 deadline, must agree to download a small program that tracks their usage. Once installed, the users will get one "ticket" per day for every Live Search query, but Microsoft is capping the total number per day to 25. Once the program is up in April, users can trade those tickets in for prizes or, if they're feeling philanthropic, they can donate the rewards to charity.

SearchPerks is an entirely different take on getting people to use Live Search than Microsoft's previously announced Live Search Cashback program, which shifts Microsoft's focus away from a cost-per-click model to cost-per-action model and shuttles some of the money from advertisers to users.

Microsoft is trying anything to get you to use Live Search. And now it’s time to add another to its attempts to try to pay you to use its service.

Dubbed SearchPerks, Microsoft’s latest scheme gives users points when they use Live Search, which can be redeemed for prizes. Users who sign-up before the December 31 deadline, must agree to download a small program that tracks their usage. Once installed, the users will get one “ticket” per day for every Live Search query, but Microsoft is capping the total number per day to 25. Once the program is up in April, users can trade those tickets in for prizes or, if they’re feeling philanthropic, they can donate the rewards to charity.

SearchPerks is an entirely different take on getting people to use Live Search than Microsoft’s previously announced Live Search Cashback program, which shifts Microsoft’s focus away from a cost-per-click model to cost-per-action model and shuttles some of the money from advertisers to users.

Microsoft believed the Cashback program would yield better results, while increasing market share and ostensibly believes the same could happen with SearchPerks. But as recent evidence shows, Microsoft’s Cashback scheme isn’t exeactly a slam dunk and the company hasn’t been able to stop Google’s rise in the search engine market.

So will SearchPerks be any different? It’s too early to tell. But begging people to use your search engine certainly doesn’t send the right signals to those who may be considering it.

In a move that could start a new wave in PC sales, Dell and Paramount Pictures today announced that they have signed a joint venture that will see "Iron Man" come pre-loaded on Dell computers for anyone who wishes to order the unit.

So far, the details of the deal are a bit disappointing. Paramount is the only studio that has signed on and "Iron Man" is the only film being offered. Dell claims that more titles will eventually be offered during the purchase process, but for now, it looks like Dell and the studios have a "wait and see" attitude to decide if they want to move forward with a broader strategy.

“Iron Man” will be offered on Dell’s Inspiron, Studio, and XPS models and can be added as an option during the purchasing process. Much like the DVD, the film pre-installed on Dell computers will run you $20 and feature the bonus footage contained on the DVD. More importantly, you can burn the movie onto a DVD, but there’s one catch: you can only do that once.

The option to add “Iron Man” to Dell computers is available now.

RealDVD hasn't even been available for more than an hour and already Hollywood studios are upset about the ramifications it could have on the industry.

According to a statement released by RealNetworks, it has filed suit against Hollywood studios asking the court to rule that RealDVD "fully complies with the DVD Copy Control Association’s license agreement." The suit was filed against DVD Copy Control Association, Inc., Disney, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, and Twentieth Century Fox to name a few.

RealDVD hasn’t even been available for more than an hour and already Hollywood studios are upset about the ramifications it could have on the industry.

According to a statement released by RealNetworks, it has filed suit against Hollywood studios asking the court to rule that RealDVD “fully complies with the DVD Copy Control Association’s license agreement.” The suit was filed against DVD Copy Control Association, Inc., Disney, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, and Twentieth Century Fox to name a few.

In its defense, RealNetworks claims RealDVD “allows consumers to securely store, manage and play their DVDs on their computers” and “does not enable users to distribute copies of their DVDs.” It was also quick to point out that RealDVD adds another layer of DRM that locks the user to their own computer to make the program even more stringent.

“We are disappointed that the movie industry is following in the footsteps of the music industry and trying to shut down advances in technology rather than embracing changes that provide consumers with more value and flexibility for their purchases,” RealNetworks said in a statement. “For nearly 15 years RealNetworks has created innovative products that are fully legal, great for consumers, and respectful of the legitimate interests of content creators and rights holders. RealDVD follows in that tradition. We expect to successfully defend our right to make RealDVD available to consumers and consumers’ rights to use it.”

Unfortunately, it sounds like the consumer won’t win here at all. Hollywood studios claim ripping DVDs on computers is wrong and RealNetworks is claiming that it has added a new layer of DRM to lock movies down.

Yikes.

eBay launched a new browser extension tool tonight that lets you highlight different products in Firefox or Internet Explorer and compare the pricing of those products on eBay. The tool also includes Skype functionality, which will let you click on a number in your browser and call it directly via Skype.

Dubbed Browser Highlighter, eBay’s latest tool will run only on Windows machines for now, but will eventually be rolled out for Macs and Apple’s Safari browser in the coming weeks.

After installing Browser Highlighter, a small icon is placed to the right of the address bar in Firefox or Internet Explorer. When you click the icon, you have the option of turning the “Compare on eBay” function, as well as the “Skype Phone Number Recognition” tool on or off. When either one or both are turned on, the information you search for in the browser becomes an interactive space to compare the price of products on eBay or make phone calls with Skype.

Because it’s only in beta, eBay’s “Compare on eBay” tool won’t work on any site you visit. Instead, it will only work on Google Search, Google Shopping, Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Shopping, Amazon Search Results, Amazon Product Pages and Nextag. If the company sees strong use of the tool on those sites, it will expand its compatibility to other services.

On search results pages, a small icon appears above the results, which can be clicked to reveal an eBay page displaying all of the auction and Buy It Now listings currently being offered on eBay. If you want to bid or buy the products, you can click the link and you’ll be brought to the listing.

On pages like Amazon where the icon is not displayed, you can highlight the product you’re searching for by dragging your mouse over the product’s name and the same “Compare on eBay” icon pops up. If you click it, you’ll be brought to the same eBay pop-up screen that will allow you to browse the listings on that site.

The feature works well and it doesn’t prove to be too annoying when you want to try it out. That said, it makes more sense to use the tool on pages like Amazon where you can’t compare pricing, since a Google search results page already offers comparative pricing, albeit without eBay included. And if you’re not an eBay user and you don’t like buying from eBay, you’ll probably find this tool a bit useless.

But the Skype Phone Number Recognition tool could be a different story altogether. Although I didn’t have the chance to try this feature out — it wasn’t included in the version I used — it looks to be far more useful than the “Compare on eBay” function.

According to the company, the Skype Phone Number Recognition tool can be used on any site and won’t be reserved for certain pages. Any page where there is a phone number being displayed will be recognized by the tool and if you click on it while Skype is on, it will make the phone call for you. Unfortunately, the Skype tool won’t recognize Skype usernames when it’s first released, but eBay promised that functionality down the road.

The new eBay extension is available for free and can be downloaded from browserhighlighter.com. It’s only available for Windows users running Internet Explorer or Firefox, but Mac users won’t be left out in the cold for too much longer — eBay promises Mac functionality soon.

Cowen & Co., an industry analyst firm that specializes in covering Web services, released a statement today discussing its findings on the success of online mapping solutions.

To no one’s surprise, the analyst found that Google Maps is the de facto leader in the space, while its rivals, Yahoo Maps, MapQuest, and Live Search Maps have slipped well behind Google. According to the analyst, much of Google’s success is due to the fact that its competitors simply don’t have what it takes to keep pace.

“Since our initial survey in July 2007, innovation at (AOL’s) MapQuest and Yahoo Maps has stagnated,” and although Microsoft has improved Live Search Maps, it remains the least popular of the four top services, said Cowen and Co. “Yahoo and MapQuest do not have the resources to keep pace and are forced to aggressively monetize a declining franchise in the maps segment.”

The analysts cited Google’s Streetview and public transportation services as main reasons for its success and its continuing investment in improving its mapping solutions places it further ahead of its competitors.

Through its digital AllScreen Syndication Network, ON Networks announced that it can now syndicate any show and accompanying advertisement across the United States and Europe by using its existing and new relationships with distribution partners.

ON Networks, which is backed by AT&T (and others) and specializes in creating better ways to create, distribute, and sponsor digital TV, will use its existing AllScreen partners, such as Verizon, iTunes, and TiVo and new partners like Buzzwire and Metacafe to offer viewers the programming they want wherever they are.

According to the company, viewers can now watch their favorite shows through partner sites on TV, online, mobile phones, and elsewhere. And with the addition of its latest partners, the company argues that ON Networks’ AllScreen Syndication Network has become one of the largest video distribution networks in the world.

More importantly from a business perspective, the ON Networks video network will deliver sponsored programs of any format to a guaranteed number of global viewers. The company has the ability to reach 100 million total viewers through all its partners with two-thirds of that group online and one-third offline. Show sponsors can then target a particular demographic, behavioral profile, geography, or particular format. The company also provides content creators with the ability to track audience engagement.

For those that want to capitalize on the AllScreen distribution network, ON Networks also announced that it’s opening the service up to any third-party who wants to distribute their content over the network in a “pay-per-guaranteed-view-model.” In essence, ON Networks will guarantee the number of people who will view the show and it will be paid based on that figure.

Have you ever wanted to know when politicians are lying? A startup called RealScoop thinks it can nail it down for you in real-time with the help of voice analysis technology that it claims is used widely in law enforcement and fraud prevention.

Dubbed the Believability Meter, RealScoop's analysis technology analyzes over 100 vocal elements of the human voice and performs over 1,000 calculations per second to find out if a politician or celebrity is telling the truth. On Thursday, RealScoop will cover the Vice Presidential debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden, putting each one's statements to its Believability test.

The site itself features a bunch of videos collected from outside sources that are played in its own player. The player features a meter that changes dynamically as it analyzes what's being said. If it believes the person is lying, the meter turns red and moves towards the "highly questionable" area. If it believes the person is telling the truth, the meter stays green and in the “believable” section.

I watched a few of the videos on the site and found it questionable, to say the least. Maybe there is some real evidence to prove that this sort of technology can tell if a person is lying or not, but let’s face it — there’s no way to prove it and I’m not sure, after watching the videos, how a person can go from believable to questionable by uttering a few simple phrases like “uh.”

I’m sure the highly political among us will find value in this to help prove their point that the candidates they support are telling the truth and those they do not are lying, but the more objective among us will see this for what it is: pure rubbish.

In what will surely make every BitTorrent lover jump for joy, a rough alpha version of uTorrent for the Mac has surfaced on The Pirate Bay and BitTorrent isn’t too happy about it.

uTorrent, which was acquired by BitTorrent in 2006, has always been a Windows-only service. But ever since the acquisition, BitTorrent has promised that uTorrent would be coming to the Mac. For almost two years, Mac users have waited for uTorrent to make an appearance and it finally has — much to the dismay of BitTorrent.

Speaking to TorrentFreak, BitTorrent’s product development VP Simon Morris said the leaked alpha version is not for public use and those that try it out should be warned that it’s still in development.

“Apparently an internal development build of uTorrent for Mac has been leaked publicly. It has been referred to as an ‘alpha’ quality build,” Morris told TorrentFreak. “The unfortunate part is that we did not intentionally release this build and would strongly recommend folks not to use it as it isn’t yet complete or stable enough to be released to the public.”

BitTorrent didn’t give any indication when uTorrent for the Mac would be available, but considering it’s still in development, it could take quite some time.

In case you missed the news, Twitter announced a new election page that will help its users filter all the election tweets across its network so users can find what they’re looking for as soon as possible. Twitter claims it decided to launch the service after seeing a spike in the number of tweets surrounding the election and the candidates.

The page is different than your run-of-the-mill Twitter page and it does a fine job of finding what you want, when you want. But it highlights an important point that shouldn’t be overlooked: Twitter needs more of these pages.

One of the most appealing aspects of Present.ly, a Twitter clone for the enterprise, is its ability to offer groups. In other words, if you own a company and you only want management to correspond on Present.ly without letting the other employees see what they’re saying, it’s quick and easy to set that up. But in the world of Twitter, you can’t create groups among your friends.

But what if you could create a group of like-minded individuals with interests much like your own on Twitter, regardless of whether or not they’re your friends? It would not only appeal to the majority of users who are trying to meet new people who are “in” to the same things, but it will help Twitter finally address some of its users’ desires.

And now that the election page has launched, we know that it’s possible. After all, how many people who couldn’t care less about the election will really go to that Twitter election page? What Twitter has done with that page is create an environment where people who care about the election and want to see what everyone else thinks can congregate and have a real discussion on the topics that interest them.

That functionality provides significant value to users and it adds a totally new layer of usability that simply can’t be overlooked. Twitter should start creating pages on other popular topics, like sports or celebrity gossip — things that a large group of people can get behind.

Once that proves successful (and it will), Twitter can use that $15 million in funding it just raised to give some of that functionality to its users. Why can’t I create a writing group on Twitter? Why can’t you create a TechCrunch reader group? Both would help us connect with those who have similar interests and we can probably do a better job of meeting new people and getting to know others through Twitter.

Twitter offers an experience that appeals to those who want to only converse with their friends. But now that it has launched an election page, it’s abundantly clear that there’s simply no reason why you can’t create groups to extend the functionality of Twitter and create an experience that goes beyond the basic functionality already being offered.

I came across an interesting app in the App Store today that's worth a look. The app is called RulerPhone and its premise is simple: it will let you take a picture with your iPhone and allow you to measure the distances and dimensions between objects in that picture.

Here's the deal: you can download RulerPhone for $2.99 in the App Store if you want to measure distances of up to 12 feet or you can pick up RulerPhone Lite for free if you don't need distances longer than 1.5 feet.

Once you start RulerPhone up, it explains how to use the app. In order to start measuring, you need to place an object about the size of a credit card in the picture you're about to take in order to derive accurate measurements between the objects in the image. After that, you snap the picture and move to the next screen, which asks you to align a blue card that's displayed so it lines up perfectly with the credit card in the picture. As soon as the two cards are aligned, you click "Measure" and a ruler is displayed, which you can move around and extend to measure the distance between objects in the picture or their length. The actual measurements are displayed above the image.

After that, you snap the picture and move to the next screen, which asks you to align a blue card that’s displayed so it lines up perfectly with the credit card in the picture. As soon as the two cards are aligned, you click “Measure” and a ruler is displayed, which you can move around and extend to measure the distance between objects in the picture or their length. The actual measurements are displayed above the image.

As long as you use a credit card and align the blue card over it perfectly, you shouldn’t have too much trouble measuring accurately with RulerPhone. That said, the measurements are more accurate the closer the credit card is to the center of the image and if you’re looking to make three-dimensional measurements, you’re out of luck — it only supports two-dimensions.

I used RulerPhone for about 20 minutes, measuring things all over the house to see how well it performed. Generally speaking, it did well and came within a few centimeters as long as I followed the instructions perfectly. When I didn’t, RulerPhone would be off by as much as three feet in some cases and proved useless when I wanted to measure the dimensions of less linear objects like a chair.

So why only 20 minutes? Once that time elapsed, so did the novelty. RulerPhone is neat to use for a while, but once you’ve measured almost everything in the room with varying success, it quickly becomes another app in your list that you probably won’t use often.

RulerPhone is an interesting idea with some utility, but I just don’t see any reason to spend $2.99 on this app. Try out the free version instead.

For its part, YouTube has launched a new channel on its site where users can upload a video stating their name, home country, and simple message to their respective government about the need to meet the poverty goals. The company will accept videos until November 1. Once that date has passed, YouTube will create a mash-up of the most powerful submissions from around the world and broadcast it directly to the United Nations General Assembly.

If Netvibes is getting old and you're tired of looking at your desktop to find all your favorite apps, Schmedley might be a worthwhile alternative.

Leading up to its public beta next week, Schmedley is offering 5,000 private beta invites for TechCrunch readers who want to take the site for a spin. The premise is simple: you sign up and get brought to your start page, which can be littered with well-designed widgets that let you search Google and Yahoo at the same time, check up on your Twitter feed, work with Facebook, check your stocks, and much more, without surfing to the respective sites.

If Netvibes is getting old and you’re tired of looking at your desktop to find all your favorite apps, Schmedley might be a worthwhile alternative.

If you want to try Schmedley out, click here. If not, you won’t have to wait long before its public beta: it starts on October 1.

In addition to videos, Evri also added an image carousel to its results pages, which it collects from across the Web.

The idea sounds fine — Evri wants to collect some of the best news, videos, photos, and important information from news sources, Wikipedia, and Google (to name a few) to create a more informative experience — but it falls flat on its face on too many levels.

Sure, it’s nice to have videos at my disposal on Evri’s page instead of searching for them on YouTube and it collects basic content from Wikipedia so I don’t have to surf my way around the Web, but most of the general information and news can be found on Wikipedia anyway. And while the images and videos are a plus, they are not enough to make me want to use Evri.

Not only that. The site is missing a slew of simple topics and on a major topic like Android, it only has seven “top” relevant news articles. If I did a simple search on Google News, I’d be able to find thousands.

I took Evri for a spin to make sure my initial distaste for the service wasn’t made in haste. Unfortunately, it wasn’t.

I first started out with something simple by searching for “Android.” The site returned an informative page on Google’s software and included information it collected from Wikipedia, YouTube, and elsewhere. I was surprised that the site’s image results displayed just two screenshots of Android’s interface. The rest were images having nothing to do with the software—some stills from a 1960s movie, a man rock climbing, a random drawing, and some shots of the iPhone and Blackberry. I then surfed over to Wikipedia and searched for Android and gleaned much more information about it. And considering the videos and images were a bit off, I didn’t miss much at all.

What about a person search? Many of the same problems persisted. I tried something a bit more obscure than “Bill Gates” and searched for “Dean Martin.” Finally, the site returned relevant images and a bunch of videos that proved extremely relevant. Only this time, the news results were crazy: the top result mentioned Lehman Brothers and its financial woes.

What amazed me most about Evri was the sheer number of sites, people, and companies that it doesn’t support. Granted, it’s still in beta and its public launch was just today, but it’s missing startups like Yammer and FriendFeed and relatively well-known dog breeds like golden retriever or airedale terrier.

Finally, Evri’s “Top Connections” functionality is a bit suspect. Once you find the result you’re looking for, you can click on the connections it formulates for the term. In other words, if you’re searching for Microsoft, the site will show a diagram with Microsoft in the middle and a series of circles with company names in them connected to it. If you click on one of those circles (Yahoo, for one), it’ll display news articles pertaining to both Microsoft and Yahoo. Amazingly, those two companies only returned 10 top results — a ridiculously low number given their history.

Here’s what that looks like for “TechCrunch”:

CrunchBase Information

Evri

Information provided by CrunchBase

Evri is trying to make the Web simpler for its users, which is probably why it doesn’t list so many news results and keeps the descriptions it collects from Wikipedia to a minimum. But because it chooses to do that, Evri quickly becomes a source for those who want quick access to videos and not much more. If you’re looking for in-depth knowledge about a given subject, Evri simply falls short of its aspirations.

And perhaps that’s why it was lost on me. I can get all that information elsewhere and chances are, I’ll be able to find better information much faster. If this is the best the Semantic Web has to offer, it still has along way to go.
