Forget iPhone MMS, Share 100 Pictures In An Instant With Knocking
by MG Siegler on November 9, 2009

-1As we were all painfully aware, it took AT&T forever to bring MMS to the iPhone. A new app has just been released that hopes to one-up it.

Knocking, made by Pointy Heads Software, is basically a photo-sharing app on steroids. With it, you can pretty much instantaneously share up to 100 photos at once between two iPhones. This works by establishing a connection between the two phones, during which one user selects another user with the app and “knocks” the pictures over to them. The video below shows just how simple and fast this process is.

Naturally, for this to work, both people must have the Knocking application. But the app, which is free for the first 50,000 downloads, has other advantages, such as being able to control the photo viewing experience on another phone. So, for example, if I want to send some pictures to my mom and show her specific ones, I would simply create a Knocking connection and send them over where I could then control which ones she is seeing. She would also be able to save any of those pictures to her phone with the click of a button.

MMS allows you to send multiple images but the sending process is slow, and the selection process is cumbersome. With Knocking, you can easily share entire albums, not just individual pictures. And MMS limits you to sending 5 pictures. Again, Knocking’s limit is 100. And even with that many photos, it takes only a couple of minutes to sync them all between the two phones.

There is also Facebook Connect integration to allow users to share their “knocks.” And Knocking works over both 3G and WiFi.

You can find the Knocking app here. Again, it’s free for the first 50,000 downloads.

  • Thank you for review. I gonna try it asap

  • I like it, but poor integration with contacts and existing photo libraries. I don’t like the fact that I have to copy an existing album to a knocking album before sharing. I’m guessing they couldn’t find a way around this, as this seems unnecessary. I would also rather select contacts than have to remember someones email address. I can definitely live with both of these issues, but I think fixing those problems would turn this app from good to great.

    • Josh thanks for downloading knocking. We are committed to making the knocking experience the best possible photo sharing app.

You can select from you contacts to invite friends. Go to Viewers. Then Tap two faces plus icon in the upper right hand corner. Then tap invite. Then tap in the upper right hand corner the contact button to select from you contacts list people to invite to knocking.

We are working on ways to import all your photos into Knocking, though we have limitations currently from the SDK to do so.

Enjoy. Thank you for using Knocking.

  • I have installed Knocked and just need more of my friends to get an iPhone now for this to be the way forward!

  • All of the Global Mobile Carriers have not truly exploited the types of data that all people can use for the benefits of enjoying their mobile experience.

This is why Apple’s Apps Store and eventually the Android Apps Store will show – especially US Mobile Carriers, that Software will rule the Mobile Smartphone Kingdom.

  • There is so much, much more people who can send/receive MMS than share pics with an app like this.

  • ….or you can just email the photos….

Doesn’t require both parties to have an iPhone or this application.

I know, email is sooooo 2007. So let’s keep coming up with solutions to problems that really don’t exist. Then bask in our coolness.

    • ….or you can just mail via USPS the photos….

Doesn’t require both parties to have an email address or this application.

I know, USPS is sooooo 1990. So let’s keep coming up with solutions to problems that really don’t exist. Then bask in our coolness.

  • AWESOME!!! ;) and it is FREE right now!

  • Let’s see, I have Knocking on my phone and my wife’s phone. She’s at the grocery store or whatever and she wants to send me some photos. Knocking sounds great! All she needs to do is:

Send me a text message telling me to start Knocking.

Oh, wait a minute – kinda defeats the purpose, eh? I guess if you’re wanting to share large amounts of photos with somebody right next to you who also happens to have Knocking.

Just don’t knock (pun intended) MMS. Knocking would be useless in most situations for most people. Guess you get what you pay for, though.

    • Frank, Knocking does not require you to be next to another person with knocking.

The incredible thing about knocking is your wife can be in the grocery store and you can be anywhere on 3G to 3G or in a wifi zone. Knocking is the first app that does not require proximity. Enjoy.

      • Yes, but unless I read incorrectly, Knocking is required to be running in the foreground, no? If so, how do I communicate to the other person to -start- Knocking?

  • Nice feature, share 100 pictures instantly? maybe I should give it a try..

  • @ Frank Furter – you don’t need to text anything. The knock shows up like a text message. You just click accept and it goes right into the session. It’s pretty cool

  • This is great! No more ridiculous MMS bugs, instant pic sharing. Finally!!

  • @ Frank Furter – you don’t need to text anyone anything, the knock just pops on your phone, exactly like a text. You just click accept and it goes into a session. Pretty cool.

  • This is a great app, much like ping or bump, the only problem this presents…drum rolll please. Not everyone is on an iPhone. Many of my friends are on blackberries, windows mobile devices an palm pre.

Make this app work across platforms and you have a winner :-)

  • > As we were all painfully aware, it took AT&T
    > forever to bring MMS to the iPhone

I had MMS from the 1st minute I bought my 3GS.

  • > instantaneously share up to 100 photos at once

    Instantaneously???

Then why did the demo only share 9 photos?

Not sure how 100 photos… and 3 meg each… over 300meg can be shared “instantly” over 3G.

3G now runs at 300meg per sec???

  • We’ll test it, but I doubt that “instantaneously” was the right word. Maybe “much faster than you’re used to” would have been better.

  • I haven’t tried it yet, but free is good. I would never tell my friends to spend money on an app to interact with me though. Even if it’s only a buck.

  • This is awesome what a great idea. I hope you guys are working on video screen sharing also. I spend a lot of time in Florida and miss the grandkids’ events how cool to get these on my IPhone as they are happening. By the way Frank Furter, lighten up this is really creative. Nice moniker you must be a Rocky Horror fan, hope you don’t wear the fishnets to work! LOL

  • I loaded the app on two of our iphones. When trying to us the app, log in and the pinwhheel just keeps on spinning…times out. anyone else having issues?

  • I think it is a great way to share photos with family that may not live close by….like on holidays and special events! My mom isnt going to be near me on Thanksgiving and this way we can show her what my kids are doing! It is working great!

  • I have yet to even get through this guys video for one reason… I absolutely hate the name of this app & hearing him repeatedly say “knocking” somehow drove me nutz!

Change the name… If he likes his logo/icon & the “k” ketters I suggest something like “Konnect” or “Konnecting” but Knocking I personally hate for some odd reason it was the most irritating thing to hear him say in that video & as a consumer relates nothing to me about what the app actually does… but “Konnecting” (yes connecting) at least gives me an idea something is sharing or making a user connection…

I will also add… The “Knocking” sound used to alert you that a sharing connection is being attempted is VERY annoying… Come on a great idea & a horrible way to push the whole “knocking” theme… It lost it’s charm before it had charm!

As well DISABLE the “turn on location services” pop-up. I said NO so that means I do not want to & to have to see & close this pop up EVERY TIME I open “Knocking” is furthering my annoyance !!!

This is supposed to be a fun photo sharing experience & so far the app continues to annoy me to no end !!!

Hmmmm I might just delete this app !

When the app started “Knocking” I didn’t wanna answer it I wanted to throw it away!

THESE ISSUES NEED TO BE FIXED !!!
