by Leena Rao on November 9, 2009

Discovery Communications is deepening its investment in online content with the launch of science and technology new site DiscoveryNews. Discovery is also launching a companion iPhone app, which costs $0.99 on the App Store.

Discovery News was previously a feature within Discovery Channel’s website. The standalone site will which focus on a variety of news relating in the Earth, Space, Tech, Animals, Dinosaurs, Archaeology, Human and History categories. The platform will include breaking news as well as in-depth features on sci-tech topics. The site will also feature regular contributions from HowStuffWorks.com, which Discovery acquired in 2007. Discovery previously acquired environmentally focused blog TreeHugger.com.

A few months ago, Discovery Communications released a Discovery Channel app which includes video content, quizzes, photo galleries, programming schedules and updates from Discovery News.

  • whats the point of the app? you pay $1 to have a crappier version of their website? lmao

  • Nice to see Discovery continually embracing and expanding online content.

  • I used to read Discovery News all the time! But then it sort of dropped off my radar. Perhaps this new, higher-profile push will draw my attention back.

  • Every “science” programming cable channel Discovery Communications launches ends up filled with Reality TV crap only remotely related to the original science topic within a year of launch.

So I guess we will be able to find out all the latest Survivor gossip on this “Discovery Science News” site fairly quickly, huh?

  • I’m a Discovery Channel fan…and I’m excited to see them getting more Web 2.0 savvy! Another good site I use to get science and tech news is YourVersion (http://www.yourversion.com), which launched at the TechCrunch50 conference. I’ve specified my top science and tech topics and the site keeps me updated on them throughout the day. I use their iPhone app, too (free on the app store, which is nice).
