Last week, Apple released its new 3.0 software for the Apple TV. Unfortunately, it looks like it came with a pretty big bug in tow: Disappearing content.
Here’s the problem in Apple’s words:
There is an issue with Apple TV software version 3.0 that can possibly cause your content to disappear after a period of time. All customers running Apple TV software version 3.0 should immediately restart their Apple TV and then upgrade to Apple TV software version 3.0.1.
Today, Apple has sent an email to all Apple TV owners advising them to immediately upgrade to the new 3.0.1 software to cure this issue. Obviously, you’ll want to do this as an Apple TV with no content is pretty much useless.
The new Apple TV 3.0 software has been generally well-received, though many feel it doesn’t go far enough to allow for content such as streaming web video. The UI has been improved, but it’s still hard to search for content without using an iPhone or iPod touch as the remote. The new Apple Remote works with the device, but it’s pretty much as useless as the white one in many ways.

I always forget I can use my iPhone with my unit. That little white remote is pretty horrible.
well, for non-geeks (like my parents), it is simple and it works
.
But for me, I prefer controlling with the remote on my ipodtouch.
Now only if they could rush something out to fix the disappearing Apple TV user base…
well played.
What user base?
logging into the guest account should fix that.
ARGH! I just f’n patchsticked it again after 3.0 and worked for 45 minutes to get everything back up and running. Now this? Lucky it doesn’t affect those that have done the right thing and freed the beast.
Perhaps Apple should permanently switch off Apple TV
Is it just me or have there been more than a few not-so-small software glitches lately in various Apple hardware? Something different is going on inside the Apple core lately.
Probably because Apple has a lot of different products now, numb-nuts.
• Mac OS X
• iPod
• iPhone/iPod Touch
• AppleTV
• laptops
• desktops
I guess it’d be best that they DIDN’T fix a problem. But then you’d blog about that? You girls are funny.
I’m a fan of Apple (and MS too – rare I know) and I’m hoping you’re not right. I would hate to see Apple’s legendary quality slide down due to being spread too thin.
I do think that the engineers and designers at Apple are the most overworked people on the planet this past decade. Perhaps Google employees would disagree.
Yeah my wifi on my iPhone stopped working when i upgraded to 3.0.
Wherever Apple goes, it commands attention.
I have not used Apple TV but they do not even have reboot / reset / power on / off button ? Greet so once power is on, it will keep consuming ? Else why they are asking for unplugging and plunging power cord, weird ! ! ! Great Design … Good Business for power plants
After experimenting and testing different ways to watch online TV, I still rely on the classic ( LoggTV.com ) and its software for TV Movies and Music. Its free internet television.
To be honest, I find it hilarious that Apple has had more than it’s fair share of troubles lately.
Between the Guest Account issue, and now this, I find comfort in using a Zune & Windows Media Center over the Apple ecosystem.
Who cares Apple TV died its death long ago. In the UK its all about the iPlayer and if they ever get it sorted out content from all networs on it.
