Tonight at a Ning’s developer event in Palo Alto, newly appointed COO Jason Rosenthal announced that Ning has reached 37 million registered users, as well as 1.6 million Ning networks created. The company also says that it grows another million users every couple weeks. Out of the 1.6 million Ning networks, 20% of the active networks are running at least one Ning application — reaching more then 9 million people.
According to Ning, on average, each network installs more then two Ning applications. Since the Ning application directory launched, there have been over 100 applications created and submitted.
Ning has also brought partners TokBox and Box.net on stage as well, to talk about how they have used the developer platform to integrate their products into Ning.
Chief Product Officer Diego Doval also talked about some of the future plans of Ning, including analytics for Ning apps, as well as launching a payment service so that developers can sell their applications to users.
Ning has also launched the Ning Appathon contest, to encourage developers to build on the newly launched Ning Developer platform. The best original application will win $5,000. Prizes for second and third place can be found on the Appathon site.
Juding the Appathon competition are Marc Andreessen, Chris Anderson and Robert Scoble. The competiton ends on November 12, at 10pm PST.

37 million registered users? ning isn’t used by anyone i know… who uses it? southeast asia?
Lots of people you know use Ning. Nng enables you to create your own social network, so most people using a Ning network (e.g. mountain cycling enthusiasts) won’t even know they;re using a Ning service. The only person who’d know probably, is the network administrator.
For example, here’s a basketball fan social network. How many of the members do you think have heard of Ning, never mind knowing that’s what powers their network?

I’m sure the members know. Especially when they get the “we are taking a little break” ning branded error messages when their servers keel over every week or so.
They must still be counting all the porn fiends they kicked off of the network so they could seem more legitimate and get their VC money.
They seem like a waste of VC money. All they are is a warmed over version of Yahoo groups or other late 1990’s web group. Its all been done before. I wish I could get $119M of money to blow through making a product that’s been done many times before and failed to ever generate a profit.
ning claims 37 million users…right.
Agreed. Is it “Accounts” or “Users”?
Never under estimate the power of ning and the power it’s puts in developers hands.
Find this very hard to believe
thank you for making up the numbers to show how ning will one day takeover facebook
Really depends on how they are calculating their numbers.
any stats on daily or monthly *active* users? i registered for a ning network a few years ago but never logged back in
Like the famous branch name ! Ning or Bing which one who easy for remember ? I don’t know but I like the Ning favicon ! [N]
when are they going to deadpool this POS? 100+ mil in funding? really?
I suggest you actually understand the business model before you pan a company you’re clearly not capable of comprehending.
The battle to be the big social network is pretty much done and dusted. Facebook has won. Now, the battle shifts to the literally hundreds of thousands of niches where you have much smaller networks.
I moved my multi-author sports blog to Ning and turned it into a niche social network and in three months traffic grew by 500 per cent.
Ning have an awesome model, they’re just haven’t been executing as well as they could be, but they seem to be getting back to their core value proposition which is to empower niche social network owners.
37 million is a lot, right behind LinkedIn. I did not realize they were this big.
This post read like a high school book report, and a bad one at that. Grade: D-.
Then Marc Andreessen came on stage. He walked by taking one step, then another, repeating this process until he reached the center of the stage. Then he spoke words that formed complete sentences.
