If you’re a computer science graduate a year out of college, there probably isn’t a celebrity you’d be more excited about knowing than Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. So when he takes a minute to record a video with you to prove to your younger brother’s friends that you actually got a job at the company, it’s something you are pretty proud of. And the fact that Zuckerberg does this kind of thing is one of the reasons why Facebook wins. Watch the whole video with Dan Muriello here.

How is this news? Facebook is a sinking ship run by idiots who’se greatest achievement was ‘building a site better than Myspace’ – not hard.
Get with the times!
Ridley 300 million People think otherwise…Would google’s CEO do that?? The point is that he is trying to tell you that facebook’s employee work with him no for him…
Agreed! oh and btw He was able to build the most viral app of this decade!
Gotta agree here def. not news and I don’t see where this contributes to a Facebook win?
Facebook has a better model than Myspace, easier more social interaction and an overall better feel than most. Users that love Myspace hate FB because it lacks customizations, users that hate MySpace do so for the opposite they are tired of excessively customized pages.
I’ve only used FB for a short time and have migrated away from Myspace, not because I prefer one over the other but because more friends/family are on FB.
If it’s not news, then why did it take you almost 3 paragraphs to discuss it? Some people amaze me, and you’re not one of them.
Of course this is news! It is novelty that CEOs behave like that. It is a whole new way of doing business. Also, it tells a lot about a new generation that can see business as a fun part of their lives.
I don’t think that just because he doesn’t take things ‘too seriously,’ he should be called an idiot.
Plus, come on… we all know you want to be that idiot as well…
Enjoy.
GeoCities died today.
FaceBook is in 200x what GeoCities was in 199x, and what CB radio was in 197x.
In 10 years, NONE of the cool kids will be on FaceBook. And it’ll be soooo old fashioned and nerdy. If you can’t see that, you’re either not old enough to have perspective, or clueless.
Trust me on this one… Zuck-, if you’re reading this, CASH OUT!
It is news because it is a simple point:
To many other CEOs don’t take the time to do small things like this and in the end such openess from th eboss keeps him on point and approachable when big issues are at hand (and not only the small ones).
From what I know, Jeff Bezos and Tony from Zappos are both this way and they are super successful with workers who love to work for them.
I don;t see how this can scale
At least Mike didn’t do another post about Twitter.
Z is more down to earth vs. Google.
All my friends from Google who either worked for them and got their company purchased in 2000/2001 (applied semantics) are out of the company now since Google “bores” them. No real contact with upper management. No challenge, No upside, No future. (plus it doesn’t hurt they are all sitting on a pile of cash).
I tell my two programmers if they want a 8-5 job go work for Google. Cause you will never get into facebook, taking hour lunches together like two old ladies and leaving at 5:05 is would not impress many people, certainly not me.
They have a super secret project to break out Mark into a big map-reduce job. That should help with scaling. #twss
create a mark zuckerberg says i work at facebook app, and just have someone put their name in for him to say it.
haha +1
Sam,
It can scale with clones, look-alikes, make up, a web-cam that overlays his face on a green mask, etc, etc.
Ain’t tech grand?
Good Promotion, Funny, the right strategy.
I think I have to put something like this on my blog but the subject is another…
Another social network winning in African for Africans, African-American and friends of Africa is AfroSocio.
afrosocio.com
Man! If only Excite@Home had thought to do that …we’d be in a different world. Stupid Jermoluk!
Without fail, the “how-is-this-news”ers are the first to comment. They are my favorite people.
We should always respond to these comments with, “How is this a comment?”
My favorite thing that facebook does vs. myspace and friendster (when they were on top) is that they update and change their product in pretty substantial ways despite constant cries from cynical users saying “the new facebook sucks.”
But he’s held on. 2 years ago, you could call Zuckerberg’s success dumb luck, but now its clear that he knows what he’s doing and he can lead an agile web software company with the best of them..
I think it takes longer than 2 years to really be successful.
Agreed, but my point was that 2 years ago, it would be harder to take Zuckerburg as seriously as people do now as he was more lucky than successful at that point.
Facebook was founded 2/04, over 5 years ago now.
Why is MZ so awkward in just about every imaginable interaction? I can’t wait to watch the FB movie and see him portrayed as a ladyslayer.
Hah, awesome.
I know you supposedly “founded” TC, but I want a video from Heather proving that you are who you say you are!
Just goes to show that Mark is a “real guy”. I still don’t understand how this will scale, though.
Feeling the Monday blues coupled with mental block eh Mike? Let’s start a topic here, you know … just to pretend we actually think this article is news
Facebook is still growing at a steady rate and shows no sign of slowing due to it’s clear customer focus. It has conquered the social media world purely becasue it’s giving users the functionality they want, not because the CEO makes home videos when he’s not counting his money.
Respect for Facebook just went up +1.
For old geeks:
Its the v2.0 of Woody Allen bringing Marshall McLuhan to the arrogant guy in the cinema queue (Annie Hall – 1977).

So Funny !!!
Sometimes i read peoples comments for fun… it amazes me lol ..
Gys @ Techcrunch.. is it me.. or you dont really know people till u start a blog? lol you get to read the weirdest most hateful comments that you never thought anyone would even say… this shit is shocking sometimes!
its way better than it used to be, but generally agreed. its mind-numbing to me why an otherwise smart technology site does not have any comment moderation whatsoever. engadget, even, has a minimal amount of moderation in that anyone can vote down trolls and they get greyed out.
Agree, Mark is great and thus he wins.
Putting the ‘fun’ back into corporate governance.
Having watched a bunch of MZ’s interviews and keynotes, I have a hard time believing that this was a calculated move for positive press.
More plausible scenario: He’s so socially inept that he didn’t know how to refuse an entry-level employee’s silly request.
I concur.
If you think that just because you are higher up the corporate ladder you should treat an “entry-level employee request” such as this as a waste of your time, you are even more socially inept that Zuckerberg.
Maybe when you learn to treat all humans as equals regardless of job titles, position, race, gender, etc you will actually understand why this article is titled “Facebook Wins”.
Learn some chivalry dude.
There is a curious new facebook check-in on foursquare in Venice CA, I think they just opened an office down here.
Nice thing for him to do.
Pretty awesome! Way to Go Dan!
Creative, nice work. Dan should have posted the video on YouTube; that would have been entertaining.
It’s awesome to see a billionaire CEO actually be human. I agree, this is exactly why facebook wins.
Just the fact that a regular employee (which he must have been if his brother’s friends questioned whether or not he worked there) can feel comfortable asking MZ to do that for him is seriously awesome.
Well done, my apprentice.
“And the fact that Zuckerberg does this kind of thing is one of the reasons why Facebook wins.” Dead on!
Hooray for Pooh!
I agree that’s the one reason why facebook wins. Really amazing
this article’s conclusion is correct (”facebook wins”) but it’s reasoning is wrong: facebook doesn’t win because the CEO does Dan Muriello a solid, Facebook wins because Dan Muriello works there.
Wow I actually participated in a survey for Dan last year, I’m a CS student at the U of I where he went to school, that is awesome.
Ok, I second that MZ behaved well and that is not ususal among the CEOs. But proving your younger brother’s friends that you work @FB? Come on, WTF?
