Fortune magazine has published its list of 40 of business’s ‘hottest rising stars’ under the age of 40. The full list is pretty diverse, but one thing sticks out like a sore thumb: Internet stars are leading the pack more than ever.
In the top 10, no less than seven are managers of some of the hottest Internet companies, if you discount the fact that some people share a ranking. And if you do take that into account, 8 out of the first 15 people on the list are Internet entrepreneurs.
Topping the list are, of course, Google’s co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin (sharing rank 1), followed by Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Twitter co-founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams share rank 5, and then we find Hulu’s Jason Kilar, Marc Andreessen and AOL’s Tim Armstrong.
Further down the list are other familiar names, including Walmart.com CEO Raul Vazquez, Google’s Marrissa Mayer, Tencent’s Ma Huateng, Slide’s Max Levchin, Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, Mint.com founder Aaron Patzer, Omniture’s Josh James, Ning’s Gina Bianchini and the two guys who are running Kiva.org (Premal Shah and Matthew Flannery).
Finally, there’s Rio Caraeff, President & CEO of Vevo. The last one is a bit surprising since the service hasn’t even seen the light of day yet, but he did use to head Universal’s digital business before joining Vevo.
Who will be next year’s hottest rising business stars? And who’s missing on this list?
The comment section is all yours.

+1
and 2 of those 7 have companies with zero revenue…AMAZING
LOL!
how do they find hottest stars? by the number of times there company gets mentioned in Google hottest trends?
oops.. fortune hottest trends
they cant use google to judge google
it’s about the value of the company they own. not the revenue.
right…which begs the question, How does a company have value if it generates zero dollars in revenue?
they could be worth billions IF they sell company
just like I could be a millionaire IF i won the lotto.
Except they CAN sell the company if they wanted
You CAN’T win the lottery if you wanted
How are these decided? The google guys have been around for a while now, I wouldn’t call them “rising stars”, would you?
makes sense given that internet is the new platform in the market and these are people taking advantage of it.
> who’s missing on this list?
The guys who run YouTube…
I agree.
Marc Andreessen is still under 40?
Yeah, he’s 38. Just seems older since he was so influential at a young age at Netscape and has continued to be for the past 15+ years.
let´s say – for the Twitter guys it´s virtual wealth – might dissapear if there is no EXIT!
Got 10 years to be on that list. A race against time.
Google guys are stars. Facebook? OK maybe. Other are worthless
I meant many others, not all
My bets on Peter Thiel to blow past all those dudes.
There is a point in the virtual wealth discussion. So many times do you have lots on paper – but so many times it disappears.
Good to see some founders of non-profits on the list.
Premal Shah & Matthew Flannery (Where’s Jessica?)

I am a little surprised to see Lorenzo Simonelli of GE on this list. A friend who works at GE was recently telling me that he was promoted to his position because the job required constant travel and nobody with a family would do it…so he kind of got the post by default. It did not sound like Lorenzo was the most qualified person for the position.
