Earlier today Sun Microsystems announced that it would be cutting 3,000 members of its workforce, less than a year after the company announced plans to lay off up to 6,000 of its employees. Sun blamed the latest wave of layoffs on delays involved in Oracle’s acquisition of the company, which was annouced last April but is currently being held up by European regulators.
Sun says that it will be eliminating the jobs over the course of the next year in locations worldwide, and that the cuts have already begun. There are reports that there may be even more cuts once the acquisition is complete.
We’ve updated the Layoff Tracker with the news.

Feel bad for the guys and gals losing their job but hopefully it becomes an opportunity for them to build businesses.

Sure. Blame Europe. pure BS
I wonder who they’re laying off. If they lay off core tech, then who’ll work on the next version? Are they still as valuable to Oracle?
If they lay off sales and marketing . . . well Oracle could help. Just hope that the deal goes through or they’re screwed.
Or were they always screwed . . . dead man walking?

They’re making the EU out to be the bad guy, when it was obvious this was going to happen.
The EU couldn’t have put it any better when they said that it “has to examine very carefully the effects on competition in Europe when the world’s leading proprietary database company proposes to take over the world’s leading open source database company,”
What if Oracle says “The MySQL database cannot be used on servers located in countries governed by the EU”? That way the EU doesn’t even have to consider it!
keep handing out those ridiculous compensation bonuses, morgan and goldman!
How is that even relevant?
FT Alphaville have something interesting about a Russian filing re Oracle/Sun being withdrawn. But they seem to be worried that it might be a hoax.
