HealthGuru Raises $3.2 Million For Online Health Video Platform
by Robin Wauters on October 21, 2009

HealthGuru Media has closed a Series C round of financing with Castile Ventures, which is injecting $3.2 million along with existing investor Village Ventures. The company publishes an information website about medical conditions that targets the 18 to 40 year old demographic.

The company’s content library contains more than 1,000 videos covering 75+ health conditions, which currently attracts about two million visitors per month according to the company. HealthGuru claims makes that makes them the largest health video destination site with the biggest reach in its category on third-party distribution networks such as YouTube and MySpace TV.

HealthGuru is building a network of verticals based on its database of health information, chopped up into categories like pregnancy, college and sex health. The company said that it will be using the extra capital primarily for the expansion of its channels for traffic acquisition and to ramp up its money-making capabilities, which are centered mostly around advertising.

In conjunction with the funding, HealthGuru announced the appointment of Skip Besthoff, General Partner at Castile Ventures, to its Board of Directors.

  • That is impressive that they can attract roughly 2 million visitors a month just on videos. MyDocHub.com’s health videos are an addition to its doctor and dentist reviews.

It sucks. It seems that it was designed by someones’ nephew.
2 Million vicitors a month? Sure. In your dreams.

      • The reason why over 2 million people visit our site each month is that our videos provide great health information in an engaging format.

Our site design isn’t as strong as our content – but give us a little time and it will be.

As for whether or not the designer was someone’s nephew…

We know that ~50% of people are men.

The U.S. Census says 30% of kids are a single child – 70% have siblings.

It stands to reason therefore that there is a 35% chance that the person who designed this site is in fact someone’s nephew.

        • Joshua,
First of all Congratulations on closing a round and more importantly, 2 millions plus visitors per month is really good.
I won’t comment on your site interface, you already know what needs to be done.
Like you nephew humor math, Great spirits mate.

          Check out MedGoline. http://www.medgoline.com

How do you monetize? Just ads? I am working on my model and seem to latch on to something that many have considered would work well.

          Regards

  • just checked out their site, top banner ad is for frosted toaster strudels. nice way to promote health, maybe they can do a co-branding exercise with the corn dog on a stick people.

    • Hmm… You think that the Frosted Toaster Strudel people placed that ad directly, or do you think it might be something from an ad network? You know, those big things where lots of ads get placed on different sites simultaneously?

  • Does any one else think black is a bad logo choice for a health company?

    • not if you consider that the logo was probably “professionally” designed by a 9-year old kid…

this is the amateurish “business” approach: put up a badly designed site with something “health” on it, load it with low quality crass ads for money, get venture capital… buy nice cars for the “staff” and you are on your way: to the dead pool.

    • PS: “black” means death, hardly associate with “life” or “health” – Plis, if you look carefully, you will see the black squatting silhouette of… Osama Bin Laden!

  • You guy(s) seem to be missing the point here. An easily accessible, all encompassing website focused on answering the REAL questions kids my age have (instead of the questions adults like you THINK we have) is exactly what is needed.

The website is easy to navigate, provides concise answers and addresses every topic you could ever want to know about. Seems like a great website to me.

    • Sure. “Adults” have absolutely no clue about the “REAL” questions about secret topics kids like you may have…
You are so stupid that you do not realize tha in every single HealthGuru medical video *ADULTS* are addressing medical topics…
Keep watching the videos. Maybe you could learn something useful and yes, I am 17 years old and I hate Twitter.

  • I think they will be a great success.

But they have to hire a group of doctors as members.
