Paranormal Activity is simply the scariest movie I have ever seen. I saw it last weekend, and still get major chills when I think about it. The movie is also a phenomenon – creator Oren Peli spent $10,000 or so making the movie, and it has grossed over $33 million so far, crushing competitors who have far more screens.
And now the advertisers are jumping all over it. Trust me, this is just the beginning.
Nokia has a new site up to promote their Maemo operating system, Maemoproject.com, which has a similar camera setup to Paranormal Activity. Watch long enough and something happens (around 10 minutes).
Whatever this is, look for an official release this Thursday. My guess is Nokia wants Maemo to be known as the scariest product ever. That makes sense, right?
Update (Robin Wauters): there’s something interesting in the source code of that website. It involves finding a penguin and if you accomplish that you’re eligible to win a Nokia N900 or BH-95 headset. Here’s the PDF with the rules of the contest.
Happy hunting. (Here’s a tip: wait for the 9 minute mark on that video)

Are you Nokia bashing again?
Thanks for the tip re Paranormal. Sounds great. And for 10K! Gotta love it when the small guys break out in hollywood.
Also, I clicked on The Fourth Kind ad since got me in the scary mood. Looks like a good flick. Does Nome really have the most missing people? Zoinks!
They Lose and they like to get the money again, please Nokia we want something unusual or back-off ..
I just post it on Nokia’s Twitter Nest
http://twinester.com/nokia
This is kind of fail. It doesn’t show you anything about the product (or maybe I’m just dense).
You’re missing the whole point of viral marketing. It’s completely uninformative and doesn’t tell you anything about the products at all. Get it?
If you click on the penguin…you get this:
http://www.maem..._submission.pdf
My favorite part about that Contest Submission PDF: “You acknowledge and agree that the Contest is one of skill not chance, and that you have little
chance of winning without acquiring the skill to use blogs.nokia.com/nseries.”
I feel so skillful for being able to click a creepy, black duck! 8-D
after seeing the movie .. even watching this video creeps me out
Then you must be a real wuss. This was even worse than BWP.
If you want to get the crap scared out of you go watch the exorcist again, now that’s scary, even after 30+ years.
At the risk of getting my @$$ kicked, I personally think that the Exorcist is a really lame movie. I’ve watched it a million times, and I still don’t see why people are afraid of that movie. And just because someone gets creeped out doesn’t mean they’re a wuss, it means they’re creeped out. I was creeped just because it reminded me of the movie.
According to the PDF with the rules, the contest ends today at 12:00 PM. That PDF must be a draft then!
Poor Michael. Do you need a Glowworm toy to squeeze at night?
Saw the movie this weekend too…I don’t want to sleep with the lights off…
You can play the video directly using this URL http://www.maem...FG_LoopFilm.flv — so you can seek and framestep (need a player that can handle FLV with VP6, like QuickTime Player with Perian, or VLC)
Took some screen caps of the bird.

Congratulations! You found the penguin.
W00T! Let’s see if I win!?
Thanks for the tip. Scariest movie you’ve ever seen is quite a statement. I went and found the trailer http://www.yout...h?v=F_UxLEqd074 and think I’m going to puke in my trashcan from ooginess.
Mike, that movie was the “scariest movie you have ever seen?”
OMGWTF is wrong with you?
thank goodness your tech insight isnt connected to your movie insight
Can’t wait to see the movie. I heard it is good.
Its loading and loading , waiting for the 9th minute!
Have you seen the new Nokia Maemo running?? That this is finally a next step over Iphone and Android crap. Finally they are back on track to keep their no. 1!
This ad was almost as lame as the movie. Nokia needs to start making more intuitive and affordable products vs flashy marketing. Apple is really eating up their “mobile computing business”. So bad to the point where they can hold back on features and slowly implement them with each new iphone to make them more exciting and compelling to buy….
You might actually want to look at the sales numbers, sparky.
Nokia might still be number 1 manufacturer, but david is right, Apple is catching up on market shares, particularly in smartphones or “mobile computing business” as he puts it
iphone iphone iphone!!!
poor guys yelling iphone..
good post !!
Dumbest movie I’ve ever seen.
This has to be the dumbest movie ever made. If you think this movie is scary, you are an IDIOT. This movie is “Blair Witch Project” in my new suburban home. This movie was so bad it was stupid funny. The actors were a couple of corn balls and the entire movie had nothing. Scariest movie ever, yeah, scary it made it this far.
We also did a parody of “Paranormal Activity”: http://www.yout...h?v=Uua7oOYY-nM
We should have done a product placement with Viagra :/
