The App Store is crowded with tens of thousands of applications, many which do the exact same thing. Just do a quick search on the App Store for Twitter, and you’ll find over 170 applications related to Twitter. But how do you figure out which Twitter application is best? That’s where App of the Day comes in. App of the Day highlights a different application every day for iPhone or iPod Touch users looking to discover high quality applications in the App Store.
Founded by Jordan Satok, App of the Day features community-nominated applications that get featured on the home page each day. Users are then able to comment on the application, and provide feedback for potential buyers.
You only get one nomination per day, reinforcing the goal of the site to only feature quality applications. Whichever application gets the most nominations, then becomes the App of the Day.
App of the Day also works directly with Gravatar, so users don’t have to upload their own picture — their avatar is just affiliated with their email address, which they use to sign up with on App of the Day. You can find my user profile here.
The concept is quite simple, and is something the Apple community has been looking for. App of the Day provides quality applications that users want to use. Satok built the site in less then 10 days and it is hosted on the Rackspace Cloud.

http://uquery.com provides the best way to find apps. Also, with the addition of accounts, who knows what else they have in the store(sic)? it is worth at least mentioning it …
We’re approaching 100k apps, which suggests we need better search and review options for the App Store.
this article must be a joke
I agree. An article about a site that, literally, has 1 post seems a bit ridiculous.
It’s a wake up call to developers to start networking. Satok is not a developer, just a well connected 15 year old kid. You can have the best app / tech in the world but its never about what you know but who you know. Satok reads a couple of books makes a few phone calls and bam… it’s headline news.
Well maybe this article was a little misplaced 9I would have waited till the website had a few more featured apple apps) but I would like to say that it has always been about who you know as well as how nice your idea/project is.
As for the Rackspace plug… LMAO the site just started so I don’t see it needing redundant servers due to the load of people going to the site just yet. But its nice to know if it did happen, the site should be up.
As for the Teen in Tech…..
For all the “adults” here who are putting down his project and idea, I would like to say “haters keep on hating”. @jordansatok keep on doing what your doing. read what they are saying but take it with a grain of salt. Use what is usable and add it to this and any other project you do in the future.
There.
I just felt as an ADULT I had to support what @jordansatokis doing while giving advise on how what he is doing is just the beginning and it will take more than a app of the day to break out from all the other app review sites.
Any other ADULTS want to give constructive advise to @jordansatok?
Agree! w. Simon …it’s not Simon Cowell is it? LOL
slow news day, huh?
This is not a real article, is it? Wow looks like a paid endorsement. The site has nothing!
“Satok built the site in less then 10 days”
SERIOUSLY!?!?!?!
Yup. I started coding App of the Day last Thursday night.
He was leveling.
“then” ?
Considering how far this is from tech/startup/anything related news, I think full disclosure about how the hell did that thing end up here would be interesting.
I don’t get it.
There’s only one app listed on the site.
There are lots of iphone app review sites out there that do a much better job than this.
Being Gravatar enabled is a feature? c’mon.
AppsFire is the best way for now to find new apps!!!
you can see the “app of the day” for today, but not yesterday? am I missing something.
wtf?
Since today is launch day, Tweetie is the first App of the Day. Tomorrow you’ll see a new App, and be able to navigate back to Tweetie.
ROTFL. Daniel’s last day at the office? Or did you net in Arrington on this too?
What’s a good app for you might suck for me. You basically have to look, read, and then purchase. We all that the EyeTV app would be great, turns out it was broken out of the gate. Both Apple and ElGato made a boat load of money on it and now nobody’s giving refunds.
Watch what comes out, see what works for you and then choose. No one app is going to be the best at finding something for you.
Your personal preferences are what will determine that.
Mike
The “rackspace cloud”, aka, a server on the internet. Larry was right.
Wow, how in the world does it manage to work “directly with Gravatar”?
That must be absolutely amazing technology since Gravatar has never, ever in its entire history been used by an outside app!
What a scoop!
Finding the hidden gems would be more useful than writing about crowd favorites.
85,000 apps is only the tip of an iceberg. “App of the day” sounds like a legitimate discovery tool for a certain target. It doesn’t solve the problem for everyone.
Other interesting attempts to help discovery are out there (Appsfire, Appolicious, 16apps, etc). Like on the net, there’s not one single way to filter content and maybe users will end-up using more than one.
Pretty soon we’re gonna need an app finder to find the best app finder apps.
I hope App of the Day is at the top
WTF? Brusilovsky, man.. what’s going on?
Would love to get the full disclosure on this post, its either very hilarious or very sad.
1st time commenter on the site, but reiterating what has already been said: Full disclosure is needed on posts like this, otherwise Techcrunch has just lost all credibility with me as a reader.
It is painfully obvious this site was only built in 10 days and there are many other app filtering site that are more deserving of this kind of story.
Arrington you need to step in and publicly defend or condemn this post. It’s clear that Daniel is only covering this because Jordan is 15 yrs old and is another wunder-teen like Daniel. It’s also supports Daniel’s Teens in Tech initiative.
Taken at face value, App of the Day is lame, not newsworthy and a black eye for Techcrunch. It’s time to take control Mike or you’ll lose credibility with your core audience.
What an awful / pointless article. I thought techcrunch quality controlled it’s content :-/
Lets do the basic math:
75000 / 365 = 205.47945205 years to give every app its ‘app of the day’. Not even reviewing multiple apps or anything remotely useful.. and with no decent record of apps. Wow. Just wow.. no disrespect to the website designer i just don’t see how this is worthy of a techcrunch read, or indeed how it really makes it any easier to find iPhone applications. It’s not a search engine, it’s not a full application directory, just a plain and simple “random app” thing.
Okay, I get the comments asking for full disclosure on the article, but all these snarky people commenting about how you can “totally tell that website was made in only 10 days” should get off their pedestals. Know what other website looks like it was built in 10 days? Twitter.
Sounds like a potentially useful and successful website… but I wonder why is TechCrunch in such a hurry to write about this very new site?
good find I also check out http://www.appsafari.com they list some good apps every day
This is definitely a crowded space. To add to the list Antonella mentioned above, there is Apple’s own Genius. There’s also a site that makes personalized iPhone app recommendations called Apptizr that just launched. http://www.apptizr.com
Yeah, full disclosure please guys.
This article was syndicated to the WSJ, makes them look ridiculous too.
Ah, quite the breath of fresh air.
freeappalert.com (no affiliation) has proven to be mostly junk, but a few good deals came through (including Convert).
