Dropbox, the impressive file sharing service which makes it easy to sync your files across multiple computers and the web, has announced that it has reached two million registered users, just four months after reaching one million users. Of those, Dropbox has almost one million users that are active.
Just earlier this month, Dropbox rolled out a brand new redesign of its web interface, and new search as well as many other features. Dropbox has been very secretive about numbers, especially financials, but these figures indicate that it is definitely gaining traction.
Dropbox submitted its iPhone application in the middle of August. It still has not been approved. According to CEO Drew Houston, Apple rejected the application two weeks after submitting to the App Store, but since then they have fixed all the bugs, and re-submitted the app.
Dropbox was one of the finalists for TechCrunch50 one year ago. The company is based in San Francisco and has raised $1.5 million from Sequoia Capital.

As per your article, they reached one million users in April 2009. That is not a year and a half ago….
Fixed.
Greater milestone achieved during shortest period. Good Luck for the iPhone app.
I’m using Dropbox since 2008. I love it, but the service still lacks a personality. Anyway, they should buy the domain dropbox.com
Bye,

dropbox rules and is a great service. if box.net has been approved for the app store, then should dropbox.
Dropbox is definitely one of my favorite ways to share files. Plus the referral program allows anyone to gain more and more space.
Dropbox is amazing. I’d love for the iPhone app to get approved though. =/
it seems google owns dropbox.com domain
Hmm, it’s pointing at Google’s servers, but I wouldn’t say Google owns it just because of that. Google uses Mark Monitor to manage their domains, and dropbox.com is registered with GoDaddy.
looks like a fake google 404 error to me. compare http://www.dropbox.com and http://www.google.com/asdf.
That’s not necessarily fake. You see, google still uses that theme and that old logo for some services that aren’t meant to be used by the general public.
If Google really wants to show off its “don’t be evil” slogan, nows a good time to hand over a domain that can actually be used productively.
It’s not even a logo. Look at the page source. It’s just the letters spelled out in different colors.
Anyway, here’s some info on the owner. Maybe someone rich can buy the domain from him and then give it to DropBox for cheap.

And may be sun would rise from the west..
Matches the usual google 404 error:

Really looking forward for dropbox to have an API like box.net.
Yes, I LOVE Dropbox too. IMO they need a 25GB plan. I saw some screenshots that made me believe this was coming.
Great Stuff!
They do…go to the upgrade page and you’ll see it’s the first plan… $7.99 per month
They’re doing market testing so not everyone sees the same option and some don’t even see any below 50GB.

How many are paying?
http://traderbots.com
Lol, I’d like to know this as well. I LOVE the service: incredibly easy and not bloated at all. I would pay for it, but I haven’t found a need to upgrade to a pay plan yet. 2 GB is a lot of space to play with to do transfers.
I’m paying and I know few others. I have the 50gb plan but It’s soon going to run out.
I looooove Dropbox!
I have been using Dropbox since the beta. It is a kick ass app.
Would love to see some stats on how much Amazon S3 they are chewing through.
Dropbox is a lifesaver, I can’t imagine working without it anymore.
*Request: I would love the iPhone app to give me the ability to send a link to ANY file in my dropbox to someone’s email address on the go.
Happy Birthday and thanks for the syncronicity!
it’s over at getdropbox.com vs dropbox.com. very valuable service and easy to use. Would like a larger capacity plan though
How many are paid users?
Shhh! Read the 37 signals post http://37signal...d-vc-investment
paid user here. love it.
Gotta go with the dropbox love posted above… started using it this last few weeks. Great service.
I just love Dropbox. It is the simplest way to share files across cities, countries and continents. Good job Drew and the team!
Happy birthday and thanks for the good job!
what they’ve done with only 1.5 million is phenomenal. A huge exit is in their future.
Huge fan of dropbox. But I cannot get my head around that they do not have something for companies. The minute I get the option to pay for a bunch of accounts with a single credit card, add/remove accounts and have some basic overview of how people are using the service I will sign up. I want to give dropbox my money but I cant.
Dropbox is definitely a great tool for personal use. However they lack sufficient capabilities for multiple users to collaborate (which is usually the reason why business users need to transfer and share files), and they lack IT administrative control.
At LeapFILE we have just launched the beta of our new product, LeapFILE Folders. It is just as intuitive and easy to use, with folders that directly integrate within your desktop file explorer. Users like yourself can effortlessly share and access your corporate files in the cloud directly from your desktop. At the same time LeapFILE Folders provide extensive IT management features, with granular user and folder security permissions, quota management, data retention policy enforcement, hybrid cloud storage option, centralized user management, complete end to end data encryption with remote wipe capabilities.
You can register for a free public beta account at http://www.leapfile.com (click the beta button) or let me know if you have any other questions about LeapFILE and our latest product!
Is “Continues to Grow” really necessary in the title? I think we can figure out that they didn’t hit 2 million then suddenly stop growing.
Good going Driopbox .. I m a happy user of Drpo box .. seroisly its fantastic .. Atleast I dnt have to keep so many mail full of my necessary data .. this is easy to use .. and simple …
Best,
Daina
Dropbox is a great app! Love it too.
Another good app that’s totally free and goes well with it is Conexme at http://www.conexme.com. I use Dropbox to backup stuff and Conexme to send files to my friends, access my files remotely, and transfer files over my network since there are no limits on file size and stuff.
I love Dropbox and use it all the time, as I work across two PCs.
The cleverest thing they’ve done, though, is to offer shared folders. Now they get to store stuff once and take it off the allowance of every user participating in that share. That one little thing will radically change the dynamics of their storage bill.
I’ve been a Dropbox user and fan since it was in beta. A great product, especially when it comes to moving files back and forth on the four systems in my apartment. The web interface needs some work, but still a stellar service.
I do like dropbox but I personally like SpiderOak (https://spideroak.com) better mostly due to three things:
- Zero-knowledge security
- Sync’s retain folder structure
- 100% cross platform (Linux, Mac and PC)
Both are great services though , and CONGRATS on the growth!
I love my dropbox!
I have my iTunes and iPhoto libraries sync’d on all my computers — I LOVE YOU DROPBOX
“Apple rejected the application two weeks after submitting to the App Store, but since then they have fixed all the bugs, and re-submitted the app.”
Right… Is fixing bugs the new term for removal of all features that will lead to competition with MonopoleMe or affect the non-agreement with AT&T? Dropbox will definitely have to cripple the app to get it approved.
Gotta admit Dropbox is incredibly awesome. :)
Plug incoming: if anybody reading this doesn’t have an account yet, feel free to use my referral – in fact it’s recommended since you’ll get 250mb bonus space (as will I, so it’s a win-win):
