One nice feature of the Twitter web app Brizzly is that it has an explanation for why each trending topic on Twitter is popular at any given moment. And because these explanations are user-editable, they’re always up to date. Now Brizzly wants to share that data with the launch of “Let’s Be Trends,” its trending topic API.
The idea is to have other Twitter third-party developers use this data in their apps. Let’s Be Trends features both “current trends” and “get trend” actions that will allow apps to call the most recent popular topics on Twitter as well as the explanation for any one trend upon search, respectively.
“Brizzly users are coming up with awesome explanations,” co-founder Jason Shellen tells us. He wouldn’t share any exact stats for how often users update these trending topic explanations, but says they do so “quickly.” Quite vague, but based on my own usage of the site, it certainly seems true.
While landing third party apps for this data would be great, the big fish to catch, obviously, would be Twitter. Currently, it uses the third-party service “What The Trend?” to display information about trending topics. Right now, it only shows that information on the main Twitter homepage when you’re logged out, but it has been rolling out showing the data across the site. When that happens, the provider of that data should be in very good shape.
Brizzly, which is a product under Shellen’s Thing Labs, has been steadily rolling out improvements as it nears a public launch.

That’s great … Happn.in has one too.
What happens when Twitter launches theirs??
Just got an invite and went through the site.
Nothing really compelling. I mean, it is just “another” Twitter client, that everyone will forget in 2 weeks.
Apart from pictures and videos, what will make me use this site for longer than 2 days?
I can’t figure it out. Yes, they have cool features and stuff but can’t I live without it. Definitely.
But great effort and nice design.
Brizzly has replaced twitter.com for me. The UI is great and the ability to see pictures and videos inline is wonderful too. By far two of the best features that you overlooked are the groups and mute button. You can organize your stream into whatever groups you like as well as mute (not unfollow) someone if their stream starts to take over. Explanation of trending topics is nice to have as well….oh and the auto refresh a-la FriendFeed is the cats ass!
(Yawn) ….Tweetdeck
Let’s wait for 2 weeks before “Yet Another Twitter App – YATA” to show up.
The trending topics is definitely one of the best features of brizzly. If I look at them on twitter.com, most of them are mysteries. I dig it.
I’m surprised that there is no way to update the description of the trend over the API.
If I were them, I would want to do this because they keep their own database of definitions for the trends (as apposed to using something like WhatTheTrend) so I would think that they would want as many clients to let users contribute as possible.
“Currently, it uses the third-party service “What The Trend?” to display information about trending topics. Right now, it only shows that information on the main Twitter homepage when you’re logged out.”
I see the information while logged in, click on some of the trending topics and you should see something like:
Real-time results for Jay-Z
Jay-Z is a popular topic on Twitter right now.
Hugely popular rapper Jay-Z appeared on the MTV VMAs. He also performed a benefit concert at Madison Square Garden on September 11, which aired on Fuse.
web2express has provided daily new topics auto-discovered from fresh tweets in real time for many months. it has just added fresh blog data, which is pulled from spinn3r.com. I have found that the combination of real time twitter conversations and blogs is critical because the trending or new topics discovered from them give a more complete snapshoot of what’s going on at the moment. all the topics are freely available to the public at http://web2express.org because web2expres is an open project. it provides topics via RSS feeds now, and will provide API when there are interests from users.
We’ve enjoyed and even reviewed ‘What the Trend’ a tool which also has an API. We’ll be interested to learn if the ‘Let’s Be Trends’ API offers any additional functionality. Thanks for the info.
