Dropbox, the impressive file syncing service which makes it easy to sync your files across multiple computers and the web, has released a brand new version of its online interface. Today’s upgrade brings with it a number of new features that will make it much easier to manage the large number of files users often have on their Dropboxes.
Among the new features are the ability to select multiple files in the file browser and perform bulk operations on them. You can also select multiple files and have them placed into a new Zip file, which will make it easy to send multiple files at once. Other new improvements include a search feature, Gmail-style keyboard shortcuts, and a version of the site that’s been optimized for mobile phones. Of course, many people primarily use Dropbox through its desktop clients that integrate quite nicely with your operating system, but these are welcome additions for anyone who has to access their files when they’re away from their primary computer.
For those iPhone users looking to get their fix, Dropbox submitted an iPhone application to the App Store about four weeks ago which still has not been approved by Apple. This is just one of the many iPhone developers that has been waiting for more then the usual two week waiting period to get their app approved.
Dropbox launched almost exactly one year ago at TechCrunch50, and has grown quite a bit over the last year with over 1,000,000 users. Dropbox is based in San Francisco and has raised $1.5 million from Sequoia Capital.

Oh neat, I’ll give this a try.
nice. still one of my favorite apps.
indeed, my favorite app, it saved my data after my latest computer crash.
i also try one and learn deeper
Great app! The mobile phone version is much nicer to use now. Even possible for me to upload from my phone web browser, for those of us that have not become slaves to the Apple iPhone yet.
try this application
This is one of the most useful apps ever; I use it on a daily basis. and like ^John Tucker said, getdropbox.com works nicely on mobile browsers (and I’m one of those people eagerly waiting for the iPhone app to get approved)
why don’t you just use sugarsync. they’ve go a nice iphone app.. Oh yeah, you work for dropbox, don’t you?
I left SugarSync for Dropbox. No, I don’t work for DropBox.
Go away troll.
It looks like I got promoted to “Guru” user and got an extra 250MB. Whatever that means.
I really love Dropbox. It is everything iDisk should’ve been.
It is the best file sharing/cloud file hosting solution out there in my opinion. I can only speak on their Mac and Web version.
You know exactly what it means!!!
Apple should buy this company and replace iDisk with this technology. Super fast and reliable. Very easy to use.
Great service .
John Tucker, not sure what phone you’re using but it sucks balls just like your comment. Unsuccessful troll is unsuccessful.
Great article and app

I feel like an idiot. This is the first I’m ever hearing of it.
Nice try, you are probably working for Dropbox.
If you are not, you don’t have to feel like an idiot.
Let me guess, you work for SygarSync.
Go away troll.
Yeah Right!!! Drop Box adds a simple ’send an email with a link’ feature and it gets so many comments with ‘happy’ users.
Get over it folks. Backup solutions are a dime a dozen and dropbox ain’t got anything new. All they’ve got is some savvy marketing techniques. The product as such is lacking a lot of features other solutions out there have.
I even think the commenters going gaga over Dropbox for every single post about DropBox are all fake ones.
I don’t work for dropbox and I think the tool is awesome.
I agree w r2d2. Dropbox is one of the worst sync/backup solutions available. Lacking in features and functionality that other services like sugarsync and syncplicity had from day 1. Dropbox just has better marketing.
I dont exist or work for dropbox, but its great. My mum uses it as well to keep her stuff handy between the house and the holiday home. which doesnt exist either! Great little tool.
Troll much?

I will use DropBox when it works without storing my data on their site. It is not practical to transfer 2GB video files. If anyone knows of a product that has DropBox like desktop integration that does this I would appreciate you letting me know. I heard DP was going to offer this feature. But it is not looking hopeful.
What I mean is backup between computers in my LAN or WAN
Dropbox LAN sync is working in the latest beta builds, but it still syncs to their servers as well. Supposedly, they’re working on file exclusion as well, but I haven’t heard anything more on it.
Live Sync . http://sync.live.com
it’s encrypted p2p syncing
I use wheresmymedia to send 2gb files all over. It also does transcoding and sends links via email.
try using memeo send ! it handles large files very easily and very inexpensiv
@r2d2 – for anyone who uses things like rsync intensively dropbox is no great technical trick… but that’s not the point. It’s exceedingly well executed. Efficacy is as important as originality.
You may as well say “Oh, twitter, it’s just little bits of text… that’ll never go anywhere”.
Dropbox aren’t, I’m sure, trying to claim they’ve invented http://FTP…. they’re just trying to give people a service that’s useful.
I must have invited a dozen non-tech-savvy clients & suppliers into my dropboxes over the past couple of months… everyone gets it, everyone successfully uses it and they have almost all come back to me to say “thanks for introducing me to it”…
Good luck (and thanks) to DropBox!
PS. I’m a fan and in no way on the payroll!!
I m using the services ..this really good to keep a backup of your data .. but its paid after 2 GB I think .. but its worth .. you will be able to access your data frm anywhere .. just to need to install this dropbox on your computer . then transfer your data into it . its simple to use ..
Dropbox is without doubt the most useful free product I’ve ever downloaded. I’ve got 2 machines at home synced with it, and my laptop. I guess the iPhone version will allow me to forward files to others, so that would be nice.
Why is it good? Because I don’t even notice it working most of the time, and it totally changed my work process. As someone else said, it’s everything iDisk and MobileMe should be and isn’t. No doubt it will be purchased by Apple in due course.
My only concern is that it’s going to become so popular it will cease to be free, or collapse under it’s own weight. For docs, I see no need to have more than 2Gb, for anything large, a local backup is quicker anyway.
Not really bothered about the web update – I rarely use it, except to recover the odd file.
Clearly, I work for Dropbox, as I could not possibly have formed a good opinion about it otherwise myself.
+1
dropbox is dead simple, and free. my wife has no idea she’’s doing anything special, just save it to the dropbox folder!
And I don’t work for DropBox either, and I think it totally rocks…. I use the shared folders feature to work with a graphic artist, and it’s so easy for us…. We just drop stuff in our project dir, and almost instantly, it appears on the “other side”, ready for us to discuss…. Definitely changed how I work big time!
This might be the most useful app I have used in a long while. It basically combines the power of cloud files with traditional local storage. A+.
P.S. Its free for a ridiculous amount of space. When I run out, I am definitely upgrading.
Just gave it a try and installed it. Worked so well that I am not only using it on my PC but also as the main backup for my web server.
Great to see such a clean implementation.
Brilliant! I just upgraded to 50GB. Dropbox is essentially my home folder now
I’m not an employee and i love it.
r2d2 is a troll.
To get 5 gig storage plus the most easy software around for free is just simply amazing.
(5 gig = early beta tester)
When will dropbox get a simple web-based text editor!!! There have been too many occasions when I’ve had this need…
I’ve tried Live Mesh, SugarSync, Syncplicity, Zumodrive, and others. I kept on switching back to Dropbox for its ease of use, reliability and speed.
It would be nice if Dropbox had a blackberry client, but I guess only SugarSync cares about that.
Bottom-line is that if you are using a sync service for your critical data, Dropbox is the way to go.
This is without a doubt the best free app I’ve ever installed. I forget it’s there, except for when I need it– and it’s been working this well the whole time.
They could release a “how to” book on how to release/update/develop software for the masses.
For me Dropbox has really changed the way I work. At work I have two laptops – a Lenovo running Windows 7 and a Macbook Pro. Due to company policy I’m not allowed to use the mac on the corporate network, so my macbook is connected to the internet using a 3G modem (plus I need to test the websites I work on from an external IP).
Some things are easier to develop on the mac and others on the PC, so I just leave my dev files in my Dropbox folder and when I need to sftp to the production server the files are already on my work laptop.
Before I would either use a pendrive or mail the files back and forth now I just look in the dropbox folder on either machine.
One thing I would like though is the option to exclude certain files from being synced based on either selection or by network location (thinking on the 3G connection here).
When it works without requiring a local instal of client software, it will be perfect. Just like Google Apps.
I just switched to Nomadesk. A lot of these services are similar so it just comes down to preference. Nomadesk sold me on unlimited backup and encryption local and online. It also is pretty fast for syncing and backing up.
An absolutely terrific app just got better? Reasons to celebrate. I’m in total agreement that Dropbox is what .mac and mobile me should have been but aren’t. And probably will never be. Thanks Dropbox. By the way guys, I keep bringing you new business.
Just wanted to echo that dropbox rocks.
Pretty much runs my life.
Try SugarSync that has had a better web interface and iPhone app (and BBery,Android, WinMo) for years..
Try using Conexme at http://www.conexme.com
No data is stored on their servers, it simply creates a direct connection between any two computers on the Internet or LAN. It’s free and really easy to use. Seriously, it’s insanely nice.
