Despite having one of the most popular online photo services in the world, Flickr has done things the hard way on the iPhone. That is to say, for browsing photos they’ve made you go through their optimized website, and for uploading you had to do it through email. Both worked fine, but were not as seamless as a native iPhone application. Now they have that as well.
Yahoo’s Flickr app has just gone live in the App Store. After only a little bit of time using it, I can tell that I’m going to like it. The main screen is a fairly mesmerizing slideshow of photos from your contacts on Flickr. There is an upload button that is easily accessible right on the main page, and the upload process is nice and easy. You can obviously name your picture and give it a description, but you can also easily manage what set to put it in, and what tags to give it. And the privacy settings are very clearly displayed on the upload page.
There has been no shortage of third-party applications that used Flickr’s pictures, but this app matches the look and feel of Flickr proper much more closely than any of them. Individual photo pages look great and commenting is easy. Unfortunately, there does not appear to be an easy way to send pictures to Twitter, except through the emailing method.
The main page search functionality works well, and thumbnails are populated quickly. If you click on a photo, you can also go to a larger version loaded in a different screen that allows you to swipe left and right to move between images. It does not look like pinch to zoom works, however.
You can find the app for free in the App Store here.

not available in the swiss appstore. any obvious reason for this?
Not available on the portuguese store either… wtf?
I also would like to see this app on the portuguese appstore!
I’m still waiting for it to hit the Mauritania app store.
i could find it in the French app store try http://appsfire.com/cN
Not available in Germany – yet
not available in austria either
Blocked in New Zealand.
Yeah, this is pretty ridiculous. I’m able to use my Pro account perfectly fine from New Zealand, but can’t download the iPhone app? What gives?
Weird, I managed to get it here in New Zealand???
appsto.re URL: http://appsto.re/flickr
More Flickr native applications here:
http://www.uque...search?q=Flickr
Yeah. because the swiss won’t disclose the names of the US tax evaders.
Not available in the Greek appstore too.
Works in UK
Can’t understand what to say
Sorry but the application, Mobile Fotos is the very best Flickr app for iPhone.
1. Upload full-res photos
2. Geo-tag them
3. add to existing or create a new set
4. Tag them
5. review & add comments to any photo
6. search for photos
7. easy navigation
8. multitasking (upload 10 photos at once while browsing other photos)
Finally, you can share any photo through Twitter and set it to open TwitterFon, Tweetie or other apps. The link is shortened and tweetie opens with the photo title & link.
Mobile Fotos is the best Flickr app I’ve ever owned.
as far as I can tell on this, you can do all of those except for #8 and the Twitter aspect. I used Mobile Fotos early on, but found it to be too cluttered and slow, perhaps it’s better now. But the Flickr app is pretty damn fast, doing it strictly over 3G now.
Yes. I’m giving it the 10 minute test. the UI is exceptional compared to mobile fotos but there are just a few quicks that I’m missing out on including familiarity with the other UI
I also think that the search capabilities of mobile fotos was much better but I need some more time with this app to truly say that with certainty.
final question: What took so long?
dunno, i do know they’ve been working on it for a long, long time. as in about a year since i first heard about it. not sure if team changes stalled that, but i assume so.
My favorite feature of Mobile Fotos is looking through photos from Groups I joined. I also enjoy looking through photos in Groups my friends have joined.
@Adam The UI is exceptional and it’s free. For 99% of users, that’s all that matters.
Well, I was using Mobile Photos for uploading and I just tested this. IPhone shots with the new app only upload at 800×600, while Mobile Photos upload at 1600×1200. So the new app doesn’t do #1 either.
Hi Chuck. Thank you for confirming this.
I think from a user standpoint, a smaller file size is better because they think the app is slow even though it’s a larger file.
I’d rather have full res.
Not (yet) in the German App Store, either.
There is an upload button for me after I logged in.
Work in France
Not available in Denmark for some reason.
When’s it coming to NZ store?
I think it is blocked in New zealand.. some one has mentioned it above .. I m nt sure .. I have nt used it yet …
The country restrictions on some of these apps are so frustrating. I have bought most of my apps in the Norwegian app store, yet some are not available there. To get those, I’ve had to change to the UK store, where I currently live, or the US store, where I previously lived.
The biggest problem with this is that I end up with apps bought in at least two countries, yet iTunes will only update an app if I’m at the time is in the right store. Once a month or so I then have to change back and forth, only to have my apps updated. Why Flickr have chosen to release this only in some countries is beyond me.
Not available in Finland either
Nor in the Australian store. Fail.
not in the german store either
There does not appear to be an easy way to send pictures to Twitter, except through the emailing method.
>>>>> This is a great lack in Flickr, if it has a feature to upload photos to Twitter, it would be great one. Anyway congrats to Flickr for clearing the iPhone App approval process, hope soon it would enhance the lacking features.
oi~
*finally* indeed…
It’s not available in the Australian iPhone app store either, which is rather disappointing.
not in The Netherlands store either.
That app’s for free? Hmm, let’s see how it goes.. Checking.
It’s crashing a lot for me (iphone 3g).
Not on the Belgium store either. Hopefully it will filter down to these country stores, as I don’t see any licensing issues that would prevent it (it’s just a glorified web browser).
Blah. Its cute and all, but who is going to sit on their iphone and tag and describe photos? I can wait until I can get home and sync and then upload and type on a real keyboard.
I love the GUI, feels slick.
However, for now i’ll have to stick with the “Mobile Fotos” app, because the Flickr app is lacking the following features:
1. Multiple accounts (i have two Flickr accounts).
2. Pinch & Pull zooming
3. Upload queuing
4. Twitter integration
Having said all that, the Flickr app is very impressive for a first release. Hopefully they’ll get round to adding more features over time. Good stuff!
good app. review coming on site in a few days. good work guys and gals
I think this will be cool, but how is it useful? Why would I be viewing flickr on my iphone? Maybe uploading..
Either way, good work I’ll be using it on my iphone I just got here: http://www.comp...&gift=29670
I couldn’t find it on my iPhone searching the (UK) app store for “flickr” but I then searched for “yahoo flickr” and it showed up in the search on the iPhone so for those struggling to find it perhaps try searching for “yahoo flickr”. [note - some countries may not have it authorised yet though]
Looks like it’s pretty cool. I haven’t tried Flickr yet. I’m still trying to figure out Photobucket
w00t – the french man lives.
I also haven’t been able to find a way to save a photo to the iPhone from within the new Flickr app, though I know you can using Mobile Fotos.
I love everything else about the new Flickr app but without being able to save an image to my phone, I’ll stick with Mobile Fotos for now.
Unless I’m missing something here? Anyone?
Not available at the spanish App Store either :–(
This is very cool.
Working in the Argentine Appstore =)
Oh what an irony! While the desktop world moves towards web-centric apps, the mobile world moves backward, towards OS-specifc native apps.
email flickr to twitter has been very flakey lately from iphone as well as blogging from site. the fails.
flickr step up your game pls. I am happy for this app but WTF tired of emailing kthxbai.
Sounds great that it will finally be on an iPhone app!
Mobile Fotos … we know you don’t like the fact that Flickr just put your app out of business, but please stop trying to keep promoting it here.
The new Flickr app totally rocks. Flickr has set a new standard on how iPhone apps should work.
I have absolutely no interest in promoting a company that I know nothing about, and have absolutely no affiliation with. I would much rather NOT pay for the software, but right now, the official Flickr app is lacking in features that exist not only on Mobile Fotos, but also on several other apps, like Shozu for example.
If you’ve not used any of the other iPhone Flickr apps before, then you will probably be delighted with the new Flickr app. If you have used one of the decent alternatives, you’ll know that the new app is missing functionality which is available in several competing apps, some of which are also completely free. So clearly, it’s not always about the fee, the feature list is the most important thing to me. I’m more than happy to pay someone if they’ve put the effort in to developing something that works well, and this applies to software from any developer.
I have to say that the Flickr app is fantastic, it looks good, and is very easy to work with. I am fully confident that in time most, if not all, of the features that I feel are missing will be added to future versions. And, the fact it’s free is a major bonus. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very good piece of software. I think it has the best GUI of any of the Flickr apps that I’ve used.
My personal advice would be to research the options/feature lists, free, or otherwise, from any company, with no particular bias, and make an educated decision. This is what I feel I have done in this case, although my decision is completely irrelevant to everyone else, and not necessarily the right one. We don’t all follow the pack like a sheep though, we can have our own opinions too
Not available in North Korea either
very cool stuff.
Not yet in Japan store
Not in the Mexico app store either. 8-(
found this flickr app very disappointing primarily because you can’t work w/ your photos (mod titles, desc, access) it seems very rudimentary aimed at viewing only…
cool just downloaded.
I was just looking for a good flickr app last week. I wish it would allow you to rotate the phone for horizontal pix so you can view them better, other than that it’s awesome!!
Nevermind, I didn’t play with it long enough to discover that it DOES allow you to do that
Flickr has just launched an official application for the iPhone. Grab it here. That is all. If you’re lucky, someone on the IntoMobile will write a review of this application. [Via: TechCrunch] Related News from IntoMobile: Latest Lucky Luke comic launched simultaneously in book form and as an iPhone app Video: Short Samsung i900 Omnia review Senator McCain gets an iPhone app, too; Unofficial, that is iPhone 3G S taken for a pre-launch spin on …
cool
The fact that it takes *this* long for the Flickr app to be launched shows how bad Yahoo is in prioritizing their business. What did they come up with ahead of Flickr app? Yahoo Meme — a weak Tumblr/Posterous knock off launched by a company with terrible reputation in blogging platforms (remember Yahoo 360?). Seriously, do they have leadership at Yahoo?
Worked from NZ store about 4 hours ago. (not that it should matter but through iTunes not the iPhone)
working in Antarctica
This app is the biggest pile of steaming rubbish I have ever encountered. Everytime you launch it, it wants to go and “verify” itself with the Flickr website, and after you do that, it relaunches and then wants to “verify” itself again. It’s an endless loop. As with anything Yahoo, there is no support for this app anywhere on their site. What a waste of time this app is.
