So, as the entire web seems to be talking about at the moment, Gmail is down. But what’s amazing is the volume of people talking about it. When I first noticed it being down, I did a Twitter search and just minutes later there were over 10,000 new results. A couple minutes later, there were over 20,000.
It took a few minutes for it to show up on Trending Topics, but now it’s there, but it was giving Twitter Search fits. For a while, if you clicked on “Gmail” in Trending Topics, you would have seen “No results for [blank]” returned. If you hit it again, it kept stacking the messages on top of one another (pictured below).
It looks like Twitter has resolved the issue, and made a strong comeback, but the influx of tweets continues to be amazing. This could be a good test for Twitter to see if it can stay up and everyone bitches about one of the most popular web services on the planet being down. And remember, this test comes before that new datacenter is in operation.

Still down. Yuck.
You can search for “GMail” on Twitter by typing it in the search box, that works.
I don’t give a damn about twitter. I just want to know why GMAIL is down and more importantly when will I get it back?
Well. It is not a big surprise here. Twitter is the best of best social media for breaking the latest news in a fraction of seconds. Twitter always keeps alive the news trends, technologies. But sad that at times Twitter gets down to make hot issues alive.
It is very sad that the entire web seems to be talking about “Gmail down”.The news which amazes me is the volume of people talking about it,from this we come to know the entire Google population. Shows how indispensable Gmail has become.
@parislemon No need to search for both Gmail and #gmail – you can just search for gmail and it will return #gmail hashtags, too.
smart-up fail.
Twitter does that automatically when you click the search terms.
yeah i know, it auto-populated that search from the click actually.
Yay. I am glad it’s not just me.
Twitter is brilliant for breaking news, i was thinking i was the only one affected… So did a quick search to double check, suddenly the twitter tweets were flooding in!!
Absolutely, crowdsourcing can be a great way to find out whether a service problem is an isolated incident or a widespread issue. We’re already putting Twitter to use detecting outages at Gmail and other web services over at downrightnow.
Stop by to get the latest status or let us know if you’re still having Gmail trouble at http://downrightnow.com/gmail
Still not getting search results on Twitter. If 20,000 people are tweeting about it, how many users do you think are out of service?
Google is trying out a new model of ddosing on twitter — just let gmail down
I seem to be getting messages via IMAP just fine.
Both IMAP and SMTP are up and running
And that’s what’s the most important thing – not losing incoming emails.
Amazing. The impossible just happened! Love TechCrunch, always one of the first to update
You can still access Gmail through iGoogle. Just add the Gmail Page.
Thanks so much for posting that info!
thanks for posting that. very important.
Thank heaven for other ways to communicate–like twitter and blogs–or else I thought I was going nuts!! gmail IS THAT important!!
Is it just me or is gmail no longer listed as a trending topic? I don’t see it on my list…
not on my list either
damnit google. I wonder what is your excuse for that! i want my money back!
Thank you Bored at Work—that actually works!!
Gmail is still a trending topic. 300 results a minute!
Check this page out for more updates, I guess: http://www.goog...ppsstatus#hl=en
If you use iGoogle and have gmail on there, you can access your email there just fine
Not really, I can read my messages in iGoogle but cannot download email attachments.
This is why I use Yahoo mail. Maybe not as innovative as Gmail is..but, it always works. Always.
Bullshit.
“Yahoo Mail outages due to maintenance” http://news.cne...-9909639-7.html
“Another Yahoo Mail outage resolved” http://news.cne...-6158733-7.html
Yeah?
Compare up time for Gmail to Yahoo. Not even close. Google needs their own Fail Whale.
even with outlook there seems to be trouble fetching the mail i think at first i thought it was ok..
Google App status, including Gmail http://bit.ly/14YbNg

Gmail is back, 4:48PM EDT.
gmail is still down for me… plud, twitter search still doesn’t work.
This will conclude ( add favorite aggressor nation or Government agency) test to halt civilian communication. 41ab, 2009.
I Just installed Gmail Backup last week, but I only run it once a week to avoid calamity. It works well though we have 10 years of email 3.5 Gigs 35000 messages backed up offline, in case some one hacks our account and wipes them out, or gmail goes offline and we need to look something up.
http://www.gmail-backup.com/
I have a task sheduled that opens the app so I can remember to run it regularly.
And there goes Twitter’s fail whale as I type.

We know many of you are having trouble accessing Gmail right now — we are too, and we definitely feel your pain. We don’t usually post about minor issues here (the Apps status dashboard and the Gmail Help Center are usually where this kind of information goes). Because this is impacting so many of you, we wanted to let you know we’re currently looking into the issue and hope to have more info to share here shortly. If you have IMAP or POP set up already, you should be able to access your mail that way in the meantime. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and will get Gmail back up and running as soon as possible.

This is almost as bad as the NY blackout back in 2003.
seems like everything is going down lately.
RIght now, dell.com is down…
What is this internet era coming to???
The top engineers are at Burning Man this week.
And we’re back…
Interesting….if gmail was a msft product, we would hear endless explanations about how its sh*tty because its msft. but since its google its obviously because of its overwhelming popularity…..
working 100% for me, JUST started to work.
Wootwootwoot
The incredibly high volume of #gmail tweets shows “firehose” is no longer a good enough metaphor to describe it. “Torrent” is already taken for filesharing. A friend of mine suggested “dam release.”
that headline is really hard to parse
When Gmail is online again, I suggest you to enable Gears for Gmail, so that you can access your emails while being offline.

yep as also mentioned in my Comment here, This should work in Crisis situations like this..
dells website is also down do they share the same data center ?
You get what you pay for…
Not really…
Working fine for me now…
Yep I did experience the No results thing that you mention here…
for me Gmail worked fine for hours now and I was unaffected because I guess I am using Google Gears for Offline access which I might be using IMAP or POP3. I do have them enabled from my Account.
And that was true for two of my Accouunts one at the main domain and another at my Company’s
@rungss on Twitter…
OOoh! What’s that Drag N Drop Share option over the image? Cool.
Interesting, I didn’t even notice gmail was down until I read this.
In fact, I might *never* have known.
Bad news travels faster and wider than good.
Gmail down created a great trend on Twitter.. Even iGoogle was no working…Glad Its back now..Though I hope they will not come up with something like
After Twitter Google got DDOS attack
I have a spotty DSL connection and for the longest time thought is was on my end. When I realized it was Google, I was thinking ‘wow, what a snapfu this is’…..Back up and running now!
Funny thing is I have been talking to some one on through their Gmail account all day. Granted they are on a Iphone but you wouldn’t think it would matter that much.
Gmail on the web has been working for me all day. So this is “news” to me, I guess.
Facebook/Twitter combine to hack Gmail, take it down, and move the email driven world onto one of their platforms
Er, it’s just the web interface that is down (for some)
I doubt google has less than a 1000 MX’s for the domain gmail.com
This is the beautiful thing of email, set and forget. Twitter, facebook etc. If it fails, it all fails! No standards and a big fat central fail whale to bring it all down. Distributed store and forward ftw!
GMAIL is always down. I’ve also noticed that it definitely appears to have issues with Firefox (Mac version). It’s always bugging out in particular if I click around too much within the interface (e.g., inbox, sent, search box, signout). There is definitely a glitch there on Google’s or Firefox’s side.
