Of course Gmail being down is not good news for Google’s business (directly nor indirectly), but if you’re a giant computer manufacturer directly retailing products online across the globe, I’d wager you’re a bit worse off when your website is completely unavailable.
At least for the past half hour (since 5 PM EST), Dell.com has been suffering from a serious outage. Just for your reference, the company saw sales of $12.76 billion last quarter, and that was down 22% from $16.43 billion a year ago. Rest assured every minute of downtime is costing the computer manufacturer serious money.
Update: site is back up as from 5:40 PM EST
Are the two events related and are we experiencing yet another massive DDoS attack, or is this merely coincidental?

their home page is up. I guess as a static page to take direct hits. Any links will result 503 error

Hey ALL-
Im in Japan and dell.com works fine! However after 4 page reloads it seems to work 2 out of 4 times. So possibly this is not dell but the pier-point where their main data center is housed.

Bing Goes The Internet….
saw this in one of the many gmail fail threads. i think it’s a coincidence…
I agree the downtime hurts sales but you have to admit getting a TC post should help drive some traffic. Honestly, I can’t even remember the last time I visited Dell.com but here I am checking the homepage which is up and searching around. Anyone else suspect a little bit of strategy behind all of this?
Yes, sort of like the Apple Store going down but taking it up a notch. Brilliant!
yeah i went to dell.com too when i saw a post in the previous thread. whoever mentioned it must be a dell shill.
haha. Dell is down, but only if you put something in your cart, enter your credit card, and hit “confirm order,” then it doesn’t work! Seriously go try it.
Confirmed that Dell.com is back up.
Dell’s website pretty much sucks continuously (performance wise, it is dog slow, has been for years), so down isn’t a huge change.
About.com is working fine for me
I’m sorry, I flipped the wrong switch.
Dell.com is back up.
Meant to include the link to my Direct2Dell blog post: http://bit.ly/D01Ed

Our website didn’t go down!
I guess those of you who rely on Dell and Gmail are having a real tough time today, huh?
Pandora was down for a while. Back up now. Bad day for big companies or something else going on here?
Though I would not expect Dell really lost a lot of sales, from the folks who just had to buy a new computer today.
I wonder what brand of servers were being used. Oh wait… nvm.
got the cause of of the problems:
BOFH excuse of the day
We have to many collisions and not too many pocket ambulances.
Dell relies on Dell.com not just for transactional activity, but for processing all customer orders through other entry systems.
I did the math – the lost revenue ranges from $2-$4M for just 40 minutes… depending on how time sensitive the orders were
