Builds Of Chrome Get Updated To Show Off Their Snow Leopard Spots
by MG Siegler on August 31, 2009

screen-shot-2009-08-31-at-50658-pmAs most Mac users have undoubtedly read over the past few days, there are some pieces of software that are a bit buggy with the latest version of OS X, Snow Leopard, which was released on Friday. Applications that have been having issues include the developer builds of Chrome and Chromium for OS X. While these versions are obviously still not complete yet, there are more and more people using them as they had been becoming increasingly stable and usable under OS X Leopard. And today, Google rolled out a bunch of bug fixed to keep it purring along in Snow Leopard as well.

Specifically, version 4.0.203.4 of the Dev channel build of Chrome fixes a host of problems, ranging from text being garbled to favicons no longer working. Find the full list of changes here.

I’ve been playing around with the latest Chromium builds all day, and have yet to notice a crash. Flash is still working just fine, but unfortunately the bookmark manager (including the bookmark importer), which was available in builds earlier this month, is still temporarily disabled.

You can grab the latest builds of Chromium here, as well as the Dev channel build of Chrome for Mac here. You can also find out information about our Chromium auto-updater here, though we have yet to test it in Snow Leopard yet, hopefully we’ll do that soon and will update you on it.

Update: At some point recently, Chromium gained a nice new “About” screen (below):

  • Meh, Chrome is overrated. I used it at work for the past six months (I’m a sys admin) and it constantly caused issues with XP Pro (t9300 core duo, 4gb ram) on my laptop. I need a browser that is stable over time with multiple tabs left open. Chrome, sad to say, is not that browser. The minute I removed it from my laptop at work, everything went back to normal.

So, back to FireFox for me — at least 3.5 loads really fast. That was always my complaint with FF.

Hopefully Google will get their act together with Chrome. I’ll try it out again in a year from now. Should give them plenty of time to fix it.

    • I dnt know abt you .. I have been using it since the day it is launched.. I agree that it doesnt have many features, extensions or addons .. but it’s speed is like lighting .. very fast .. the best thing ..I m using it at home as well as office ..I have never faced any technical problem ..

      Best,
      Daina

I have the exact opposite case. I’m appaled by how much ram Firefox consumes in comparison to Chrome. It also takes nearly 4 times as long to start up.

Since I’ve switched to Chrome, my internet experience has greatly increased. I only fire up Firefox now if I need to do some debugging with Firebug. But that’s only a last resort, considering Chrome has webkit’s inspector and a fairly decent javascript console too.

  • Can’t agree more. Chrome is pretty overrated in my opinion. Nice post.

  • DRAG TO SHARE, TODAY.

DRAG AND SHARE, YOUR TIME IS NIGH.

SOON THERE WILL BE NONE TO DRAG, ONLY TO SHARE.

AND SHARE YOU WILL, MY FRIEND.

    SHARE YOU WILL.

  • I love Chrome… on my PC it runs flawlessly… FF on the other hand loads slower than IE (which is sad.)

It’s always driven me nuts that IE always stalls when launched and says “Connecting.” Connecting to what?? My home page is about:blank.

Chrome isn’t perfect – still many sites out there that it doesn’t render properly for one reason or another, but it’s the best default browser I’ve ever used.

    • “It’s always driven me nuts that IE always stalls when launched and says “Connecting.” Connecting to what??”

      >> it’s connecting to all add-ons. If you disable them all, you’ll see how fast it can really go. But I must admit, I hate to see IE doing that too, even it’s just 1-2 sec.

  • chrome auto-updater works fine on snow leopard, just ran it a few min ago.

  • What exactly will Chrome do for me that’s a Firefox add-on killer? Firefox is a great standalone browser but the add-ons are the “killer app” – yet another browser just because google makes it – so what…

  • it’s nice and all – but no f’ng maximize button?

At least Mozilla got it right with Firefox’s “+” window sign – none of this degenerate “we know what window size works best for the content you’re looking at” crap.

    • You clearly are not familiar with Apple’s intention of the ‘maximize’ sign (that is to say, it was never intended to be interpreted as a ‘maximize’ sign). Obviously you’re too biased by Windows standards.

      • I don’t particularly care about Apple’s “intentions” – the user/my experience is what matters to me. And this this “+” button nonsense on macs annoys me major time (well that, and the ever various inconsistent 3 button navigation shortcuts that every app on macs use differently or don’t use at all).

  • Sucks when even a Google app like Gmail doesn’t work. I don’t know if its just me, but it thinks that my account details are blank when I try to login.

  • Chrome is amazing. I have completely switched over to Google Chrome as my primary browser.

  • I hope this Meebo drag to share ‘feature’ isn’t permanent. It’s really annoying.

  • This new Mac OS X build (24989) has a cool visual feature. If you hover a tab, you’ll get an ever so slight “spotlight” effect on the tab as you move the mouse pointer around. It’s very subtle, but hover the tab at the top and see the “spotlight” effect.

    • I should add, this effect is visible on the tab handler (I mean the tab button, no sure what its actually called) of an inactive tab.

  • Any ideas why Chrome simply will not start?

  • There is a MAJOR bug in the current build of Chromium. The color shift is MUCH darker for everything in it. Take any web site, and put safari next to chromium, and you’ll see the difference. Safari/Firefox has the correct color, Chromium is very dark.

I thought I was losing my mind working on stuff.
