It’s as though Google doesn’t want you to use its new Chrome browser. If you try to install the Google Toolbar on Chrome, it practically suggests that you switch browsers. Chrome users are greeted with this message:
We’re sorry, but Google Toolbar 5 is only available for Internet Explorer and Firefox
Of course, Chrome is like a giant Google Toolbar that takes up the whole screen, so you don’t really need it. (The Toolbar offers Google search, bookmarks, search suggestions, Web history, and shortcuts to Google apps). But still that’s not the message Google wants to be sending to curious Chrome users.

Chrome does not tell you the pagerank. And you cannot install the toolbar to know it.
Of course you can’t install it, because the concept of toolbars will quite likely even not be present in chrome ONCE they create addon functionality. Aside of that: ppl have been complaining about this since day 1 that chrome was launched, where did suddenly the reasoning come from that its neccery to suddenly publish this.
We’re sorry, but Google Toolbar 5 is only available for Internet Explorer and Firefox
>>>>> Actually the message does not insist users to switch browsers. It just intimates that the new version doesn’t support the Chrome browser. I feel it is not an intentional one as both Toolbar and Chrome belongs to Google.
PageRank can be viewed in Chrome, along with all of the other features of the Google Toolbar. Many many extensions are available on Chrome now. To accomplish the same look of icons for buttons across the top that you get with Google Toolbar, you just turn on the Bookmarks Bar in Google Chrome and create shortcuts with no name. Only the favicon for each site will show. To get PageRank, bookmark sync, Gmail unread count, ad-blocker, etc, etc… just install the appropriate extension or user script.
extension?
yes: http://code.goo...hrome+extension
Are you nuts??? very user friendly that crhoem of yours!!!
andrescor22 , if you are a web developer, you better be able to figure that out. if you are not a web developer, why do you care about user friendliness?
Remember folks, Chrome is meant for ordinary people with ordinary needs who probably would not switch to Firefox anyways.
I am sorry. Web developers who cannot fiddle with a web browser are full of FAIL.
Actually if you click the download good toolbar 5 button on that screen shot it links through to a Firefox download page
download “google” toolbar
As a matter of fact, it’s possible to show any website pagerank with the following Chrome extension:
http://code.goo...m/p/chromerank/
You may have activated the extensions on your browser first.
chrome is just an afterthought for google. they dont actually give a shit about it
hahahahhahahhahah
In a couple of years, you will realize how stupid that comment was.
I agree. It is just a ploy to keep the market diversified. Don’t want anyone to pull the plug completely on Google’s ad network.
We have not even seek Chrome Sync yet and it is making my Mozilla Weave feel inferior.
I was unable to create an Adsense account on Chrome. If Google does not put the necessary QA resources behind Chrome, it will quickly be detrimental to their image.
Exactly for the same thing I tried installing toolbar. But then it showed the message and I searched for sometime before I realized that there isn’t any toolbar for Chrome. It’s kind of frustrating to open the same web-page on mozilla and check its rank.
Google hopefully you listening

USourceIT your single source for all IT needs
yawns… google toolbar is just not worth having. if you want pagerank info, there are lots of other firefox extensions which does the same thing
somebody is fired
Which world have you lived in for so long? Google Toolbar has never every worked with Google Chrome or for that Webkit which runs Safari too.
And did you forget about Opera? Or you only thought there were three browsers?
go back to Mumbai
@john doe,
Anonymous coward, that was a stupid comment.
Mumbai? Are Google Toolbar for Chrome available there. Would appreciate if you let me know the address as I am just 800 miles from Mumbai
You’re also 4,000 miles from correct English.
Yeah. Why is this even a story? Wake up TechCrunch!!!
This is awesome news.
Google made all useful and free things now something backfired big time.
That is the disadvantage of eating more than one can chew.
I love opera, so I can not implemented toolbar on it. Orkut does not allow me to chat.
So on.
I wonder what will happen to Chrome the OS.
I saw this coming. There is always one (and no more) Opera user in a discussion about Firefox or Chrome.
Upgrade your crystal ball becuase here comes another one: Opera FTW!
Believe it or not, I am actually glad I was wrong.
I don’t like the principles behind Opera (proprietary software) but it is always good to have some competition).
They don’t need to get users to install Google Toolbar as Chrome tracks your browsing in itself.
If you really want PageRank Chromefans.org has a bookmarklet that will show it on demand for you:
http://www.chro...s-extension.htm
What message are they supposed to tell you if you try to install it on Chrome? It doesn’t “practically suggest that you switch browsers”. It tells you that the toolbar doesn’t work with the browser you’re using.
and that leads a user that really wants the toolbar to switch browsers…
And since the browser has all of the main features of the toolbar built into it, why would you add the toolbar to the browser? That’s almost like adding an ActiveX toolbar to Internet Explorer.
Have a great day:)
Patrick.
a user that doesn’t get what Chrome is about.
How a user thinks…
“I have been using IE6 since I have internets, I has a Gmail to read my emails and is really simple and I use this bar that is awesome cause I don’t have to login or shit… uhmmm Google Chrome must be awesome cause Gmail is awesome and the bar is awesome and shit… no bar?… wait WHAT!!!??? TFSU!!!!”
Star wars, seriously?
hahah Nice. Now this is news. lol Sry to be the obvious one but how is it that a toolbar does not work on a browser made by the same exact company? Lets see the excuse on this one.
basic google toolbar functionality is already present on chrome. most users do not need the rest of the features like pagerank checker. maybe a language switcher can be added to chrome. but overall, i do not miss the toolbar on chrome. it’s a browser designed to make use of the google search engine optimally.
the fact remains chrome is optimized for the regular web user who is still stuck on internet explorer.
The extension platform for Google Chrome isn’t done yet.
Completely agree. Although Google Toolbar is useless for Chrome, that’s not what the message chrome users should be receiving.
what “Pay no attention to that Matt Cutts behind the curtain”
A bit overreaching, I mean it says the appropriate error, and how many people using chrome actually want to install the toolbar?
Agreed. Wouldn’t having both be a bit redundant?
Either way, they should change that message to something more fitting…. i.e. “I heard you like google so we ALREADY put google in your google so you can google while you google.”
AWESOME!!!!
I want the tool bar, for easy acccess to pagerank, and translate. Use the bar all the time, in fact the bar is the only reason I don’t use chrome as my browser.
I want the toolbar; there are a lot of features in the toolbar way beyond search that I have come to love, and I use chrome.
I want the toolbar — I miss its added features, like the URL directory up button, etc.
They have all the features the toolbar provides in Chrome already, idiot.
No they don’t, idiot.
The googlebar has an “Up” button which is not in chrome.
The googlebar has “search words” buttons, which are not in chrome.
Those are pretty major features.
A new kind of fanboy??? a Google Chrome fanboy??? so lame… there are no Firefox fanboys even… you know ’cause Firefox blows..
Exactly, Noah.
TechCrunch Article Fail: Those with Google Chrome do not need the Google toolbar.
Rick Post Fail: The googlebar has an “Up” button which is not in chrome.
The googlebar has “search words” buttons, which are not in chrome.
Those are pretty major features.
LOL @ the title without having read the post yet.
authority limited
I think it makes sense… I mean, the message could be worded differently, but that’s the only thing.
If I download any software I have to use different installs for my Mac vs my PC… If I install a multimedia plugin for FF, should it automatically also work in Safari??
It’s not weird that their toolbar that works on IE doesn’t work on Chrome… and it’ not weird that they don’t make a toolbar for Chrome, as it would be mega-redundant.
So, re-word the message a little and no biggie.
The intent of the individual visiting the webpage is to learn about and potentially install the google toolbar. Google gives the proper notice that their current browser doesnt support it. The links to the other browsers are to support the purpose of the page: “install the google toolbar” which you need a different browser for.
Guys, guys, guys, check it, check it, check it, you have GOT to get rid of this sharing virus that has infested your website. Trust me, I don’t want to share ANYTHING I pick up from this whorehouse of a website. Please get rid of the skanky skanky javascript that is getting all up in my grill. It’s so annoying it makes me yearn for the days of popup penis enlargement ads. Guys! Seriously! Check that shit!
A Safari version could be nice, and for chrome probably replace “we’re sorry” with “We’re excited. You already have the best browser experience, this toolbar is for lame browsers”
Let’s go ahead and ‘debunk’ this one, if you will.
“Toolbar features”
Reach your most visited sites by opening a new tab in your browser
[ Chrome has this ]
Add gadgets to your toolbar to view your favorite content from any site
[ Chrome has this ]
Access your toolbar from any computer by saving your settings online
[ Chrome Bookmark sync? ]
Get suggestions instead of error pages for broken links or mistyped web addresses
[ Chrome has this ]
Sorry, but you’re wrong. The googlebar has an “Up” button and “search words” buttons which are not in chrome.
Actually there are several other Google Services that don’t play nice with Chrome….I always have problem with Google Chat showing up within my Gmail Inbox as well as Google Analytics sometimes doesn’t show traffic graphs….
Slow news day?
fast wanker day?
Yawn
That’s Google for you.
Who cares Toolbars in general are one of the worlds most annoying inventions ever… EVER!
I AGREE!!!!!
I second that
Yeah I’d much rather have a single menu for every program, at the top of my screen!
The extension platform for Google Chrome isn’t done yet (there isn’t even a toolbar API in Chrome yet for this to work).
Plus most of what the toolbar provides you can just use from Google itself.
IE6 lives on!
Not expect this much ordinary post from Tech Crunch, everyone knows Chrome does not support extensions .
I didn’t think Google Chrome supported plugins or toolbars yet. So it’s not really that weird.
Nice to know I’m not the only one who finds this crazy and frustrating. Chrome’s lack of support for Google Toolbar is one of the biggest reasons I’m still with Firefox. (I make fairly heavy use of Bookmarks.) I can’t believe Google’s so far down the line with this product and hasn’t resolved the issue.
I agree with you .. I m still sticking with firefox as it makes my surfing very easy for me with its addons and extensions.. for me Google tol bar is a must .. Thouigh I do use google chrome.. just because of its speed, which is really good .. Otherwise I love firefox .. I use chrome only for facebook and blog posting ..I dnt know why but when ever I try to update my blog post on my blog .. it always gives me a error in Mozilla Firefox ..
Hope google can work on it to …
Cheers,
Daina
Daina – Chrome is fast because it has so few features. My calculator is faster than my iPhone for the same reason… but I’d still rather use my iPhone.
What a non story.
This just in: the Mozilla Foundation practically begs you to switch to Microsoft Office because Firebug does not, in fact, allow you to filter spam in Sunbird.
Srsly.
The toolbar is very handy way beyond search. You would think that its functionality would be a core part of Google chrome.
It would seem that there are more Google things that don’t work on Chrome. For example, I use blogger, and the layout page where you can customize the fonts and colors doesn’t reflect when you use Chrome (it works fine in FF).
Chrome not finished, so who cares?
cool story bro
I’ve noticed this from the day I installed Chrome months ago.
What I miss the most – AutoComplete and AutoLink.
Why can’t Goggle automatically import your bookmarks and other features from Toolbar once you download Chrome. With an Option menu for folks to cherry-pick from. I love Chrome but uses FF [which is awesome with the add-on/s] because I am unable to access my Bookmarks the way I arrange them.
I just watched this again, i’m going back to Firefox!
http://waxy.org...eative_commons/
Another thing that’s annoying is Google Desktop doesn’t work with Chrome. Like it literally doesn’t work. You have to set IE as your default browser to get Desktop to return search results!
Google is a joke for everything except search. They are a very big company with very immature leadership. It’s obvious that they are a search company that subsidizes many independent and uncoordinated initiatives.
seriously… who uses goog these days when we have BING?
Google Chrome is quick and snappy, partly because it does not allow addons. I have nine in this firefox profile (I removed a bunch after it started affecting performance).
Also in the news: Microsoft Office for Mac doesn’t work on Windows!
+2 for this
This is dumb. It’s like laughing at GM because their old Geo Prism engines don’t actually work in the Chevy Volt, even though both are made by the same company. It’s completely irrelevant. Wasting an entire article about this is a good way to get paid, but beyond that, please.
I am always waiting on this toolbar thing, however, google cannot support itself well still.
I just can not figure out why?
probably because concept behind Chrome is not to need such things as browsers and software extensions. suspect goals is to everything working from within the browser window.
such things as TOOLBARS and
There is a great browser if you want all extensions in the world… Firefox! Keep Chrome fast without the extra overhead…
Inst this pathetic? that too from Google?
One word : Fail
wow, that’s great news ! forgot to publish this one two years ago ?
truliruliasdlkjhasd asd
this is a pointless article… what do you expect with something that is pretty much still in development. just because it’s google that’s developing it, doesn’t mean that it automagically arrives with 100% support for everything.
how about articles on stuff that matters rather than brainfarts – that’s what twitter’s for!
Can’t agree with you more! TC gets more and more pathetic.
How come you realized that face so late?
My response: I hope Chrome never supports Google toolbar, or any other toolbar – ever. Dear Google – please halt all development on any toolbar or plugin framework for Chrome. Your browser is the best on the market right now.
Please, please so not ruin it with “extensibility” features (a.k.a hooks for mediocre developers and malcontents that allow them to turn my browser into a malware-infested dung heap)
With FF 3.5 a colossal flop this is your chance to continue to focus on speed and stability and gain some market share,
Ok while I can’t agreed with the ‘dont add extensions at all’ stuff, I do have to agree that it should ignore toolbars. Toolbars are the biggest piece of shit item ever created for a browser. The only one I have ever found worth having is the Web Developer Toolbar in FF. Other than that.. blah. Toolbars sucks, author should be slapped for writing on such stupid crap.
It’s just a matter of preference, i believe. Me, i find toolbars important and i’d love to install each and every one of them that makes my browsing experience convenient, if i have to.
This is one of the major things that stops me from switching to Chrome. I need my Google Toolbar!!!
Seems really foolish of Google to push Chrome yet not fully integrate all of their products with it.
