Microblogging is one popular type of cake, and Six Apart damn well wants a piece of it too. The company has just added a new element to its TypePad offering: a so-called ‘microblog-style blog’, which I imagine could just as well simply be dubbed a microblog. If you know what Posterous is and does, it’s easy to explain what the new TypePad feature does: exactly the same.
If you’re a TypePad user, you can now post by e-mailing in an article or using your iPhone to publish whatever short posts, links, videos and pictures you want to put up on the web easily and rapidly. And you can just as easily push the content back out to other services such as Facebook, Twitter and FriendFeed while you’re at it, which is entirely in line with what Posterous has been all about since its inception. To complement the new feature, Six Apart is also adding some new custom themes to TypePad, starting with the Pico template the company introduced yesterday.
The only difference with Posterous that I can see is the support and training Six Apart provides with its TypePad service and the fact that you can add advertising units to your new mini-blog, although I can’t imagine this will convince many individuals to actually pay for a microblogging service when there are so many free alternatives.
Or will it?

Robin’s back! pictures?
On the way. But, should I use TypePad or Posterous to microblog them?
Posterous!
posterous, definitely.
TypePad!
Posterous, no doubt!
Go Posterous.
Oh typepad

Out of all the lifestreaming applications, I think I’m right in saying TypePad is the only one to offer the option to include advertising? (Unless you self-host and customise it…)
It’s a tricky one, because I firmly believe one of the reasons Blogger remains successful is by providing hosted blogging which allows advertising, but I sincerely doubt many people would ever see a profit from advertising on a Typepad lifestream if they’re paying out $4.95 a month.
Whereas a free hosted lifestream with advertising options could grab some traffic from Posterous/Tumblr, and also increase overall figures (OK, so it would also attract spammers, but heyho!)
A lame attempt at emulating twitter.
Typepad has had post by email for at least 2 years now and the iphone app since the launch of apps on the iphone. Not too much new here.
Dan makes a good point about advertising… and Typepad has a long history. It’s also something you can run a whole site with. Posterus is still pretty new.
This sounds a lot like Glue too. http://GlueNow.com
They’re releasing a paid service as well.
Great to have you back Robin!
I’d stick with Posterous, I really like it and it does a superb job.
Well, I think if someone gets impressed by the Typepad microblogging service and loves it in the end, he or she will pay for it.
I think it is great to see that Six Apart are adding these services.
I just heard of posterous through this article and wow! I am really liking it so far and they seem pretty big. I looked up their IP and it looks like they host on slicehost too, which gives them an extra point in my book!
I am a posterous user and Typepad user. Just tried to set 1 on those microblog on Typepad. The least i can say is that it is far from being easy.
You need to create a new blog. then know that you have to chose a skin template of 1 column. Then chose the right theme (Pico)…Then go look for your email address in settings…Too many clicks and set up…
Then i tried it and posted a youtube URL to see if it formats the video like on Posterous. Nothing. It lives the URL as is and do not even make it clickable
This is just a FAIL. too bad i thought i was going to migrate
Thanks for trying it out, Ouriel.
This is just the first version of microblogging on TypePad. We have a lot more coming, including more video options and easier theme management.
If you have any more issues, just let us know. You’re feedback will drive the next round of improvements.

Gerry Tan may have, but Garry Tan didn’t.
LOL, man trolls crack me up.
Reminding us, again, that Posterous has nothing to show but one easily replecatable feature, and is still miles behind the competition in every other category.
Hum I have been using Typepad for more than 4 or 5 years… At the time it was really great with easy templates,… but come on, there has been nearly NO major updates in such a lllllllllllllllong time… despite you have to pay for it… Ok last week they finally reviewed their totally lame & unfriendly interface… I am testing Posterous for 2 weeks now, and I have just decided to move my domain name on it… because IT IS JUST SO FAST AND EASY!!! It is amazing I can now share videos, images, in seconds! And especially update my Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and event Typepad from Posterous… It is just motivating me back to blog and am sharing ten times more stuff now… So Typepad, sorry but if you want people to PAY, you’d better offer more and not less (more doesn’t always means more features, but better and easier ones) than free competition like Ning or Posterous…
I’m with @emmanuelvivier here. I’ve been a TypePad user for near 10 years now. Their recent interface update was LONG overdue. And I’ve discovered the sublimity of Posterous. I appreciate that Posterous isn’t ready for serious bloggers to host their main blog at (yet) — no templates/customisation, no widgets/side html, no quick archive search. But for me, TypePad is insufficient. I’m seriously contemplating moving over to free Blogger. One reason I kept away from Blogger was the lack of any file hosting (especially audio). But Posterous (and AudioBoo) take care of that. So why am I paying TypePad money for?…
