Yelp keeps rolling out new iPhone apps with compelling features. In April they released version 2 and added the ability for users to leave reviews on local businesses, a much needed feature since people want to chronicle their experiences as they happen.
Version 3, which should be available soon, adds more useful features. The one that really stands out is “Sales And Offers Near You” which lets users find deals that are physically close to them. Sort by distance (in blocks), price, whether the business is open right then, or by neighborhood. Businesses can add special offers for free on their business page.
Other features include movable maps, and new ways for users to add content. Users can vote on reviews with UFC buttons (useful, funny or cool) and send compliments to reviewers. Users can also now follow Talk conversations via the iPhone.
Too bad none of this stuff is available on the Android. I might actually use it. Oh well, at least I can watch via the video below:

Yelp app is seriously useful, especially when you’re out in a new city and don’t know good spots to eat.
Keep an eye on http://justbought.it iphone app coming out this weekend.
extortion 2.0 on the iphone!
i hate it when they tell you what’s coming… when you want it now!

That’s OK, Google Voice is way cooler than any of that iPhone crap anyway.
and skype running in the background
Ahhh, but the iPhone is sooo silky smoooth!
No. It’s not out. Not yet.
nice product. will they ever mature and change their name and logo. all that funding and they use a domain and logo that cries for help. i think yelp and mahalo should merge.
Reviews are still kinda misleading.
I’ve found the prior Yelp apps to be pretty cool. I love the photo linking from the app and the crossing over to google maps to find the location. The reviews are only as good as the reviewers. I’ve always had great luck with the new places I’ve found because of Yelp and Yelpers.
It’s really a good foundation.
i gave the iphone yelp app a true stress test on a cross country road trip last week where i knew nothing about the cities in which i spent each night along the way. it failed big time, and we ended up having to go to the full page in mobile safari each time to get what we needed. in short, the app was a waste of time. as i’m increasingly finding, the mobile app versions of popular sites and web apps really don’t cut it if you’re used to all the bells and whistles of the regular sites.
i believe the key to any mobile app is response time vs feature set – yelp is seriously lagging in both. i’ll keep using mobile safari to access yelp, but only until something better comes along.
side note: GV and backgrounding work perfectly on a jailbroken iphone.
Yelp has done an amazing job with their iphone app. It is specially useful on my business trips where I have no idea where things are.
Suffering from switching remorse, Arrington? That’s the price you have to pay for your neophilia…
Indeed, but once you’ve done a droid, there’s no going back…
Can you recommend some Android apps that you use?
