As one of the most popular applications on Apple’s popular iPhone platform, a lot of users are eagerly awaiting the next version of the app. And that wait is almost over.
“The app is pretty much done – we’re just working on translating it into a bunch of languages,” Facebook developer Joe Hewitt wrote tonight on Twitter.
That means that shortly, we’ll have access to the much-improved app which is scheduled to have features such as a News Feed that is more like the one on Facebook’s site, the ability to “like” items and a new customizable home screen. More importantly, it will also have video support for the iPhone 3GS, something which Hewitt threw-in at the last second, unexpectedly. And perhaps best of all, the app will have the ability to manage events, finally.
But don’t get too worked up just yet. We asked Hewitt if “pretty much done” meant next week perhaps. His response: “Can’t be sure – translating could take a while. I’ve been avoiding predicting an actual release date“. And of course even when the app is done, Facebook still has to submit it for approval in the App Store, and as we all know, that can be a crapshoot. We could see it next week, we could see it 6 months from now. Though, Apple does seem to do a pretty good job pushing important apps like this one through quickly. Funny how that works, isn’t it?
Facebook is also finally working on an Android app. That should drop any day now.

Thanks to apple for developing this application because we can’t live without Facebook and Twitter.
Do you love Facebook?
WTF?!!!
Apple doesn’t make the Facebook app! You run a technology blog, do you not?
Another @twitter idiot. I would say 90% of the dreadful comments come from people with twitter handles.
Top MG article quotes:
‘most popular applications on Apple’s popular iphone platform…’
‘Microsoft’s completely unpopular internet explorer on its unpopular operating system…’
ok so maybe the second isn’t true but it might as well be (maybe add a random update to this article and include that MG?)
if this had anything to do with Microsoft or Internet Explorer, I would.
dude, take a twitter break for God’s sake. This is getting ridiculous.
I didnt know MG was forcing you
yeah I guess you have a point – one of the first you have made on tc. I kid
haha come on mg – I love your biased because it breaks up the monotony of a day and such but I couldnt get past the first two lines without chuckling on this one. I gotta dish a little trouble for that.
I hope he means it this time. I’m sure he does. But, like a month ago, he said it was 99% done. It looks like a great!
As a facebook addict, I look forward to this application.
How about linking facebook contacts with your phone contact book?
that would be nice. the Pre is the only phone that does it but it can be a pain because all of your friends become contacts (which honestly nobody really wants that). a facebook app integration for that on the iphone would be awesome.
The new Blackberry Facebook app does that, too.
They kinda have it for the Mac – search for AddressBookSync. Due to the TOS, it can’t link up phone numbers, but it does link up stuff like Profile photos and birthdays. I think there’s a similar one for PC too.
The iPhone BeeJive app links your buddies from AIM, Gtalk, MSN, Yahoo, etc… to your address book contacts. Not sure why the FB app doesn’t do the same…
The FB App has really disappointed me.
there’s an app for that. It’s called FeX. But only pix and “approved” info. Facebook only allows certain information out of their system. For good reason.
Is is just me, or has Facebook interface become so ridiculously confusing and impenetrable that the only fun way to use it is via the iPhone app.
I thought I was the only one who felt that way. This new apps sounds more like the new web interface – doubt I’ll upgrade. My status stream needs are met by Twitter. Although the video upload could be cool. Hopefully a YouTube app is right around the corner.
awesome app, fully support this
I hope that will include a quickly management of groups
I wrote something similar, but you issue more deeply exposed.
I thought this app was almost ready a month ago!

Yes this is the social network,
but Facebook online mobile application is soo good…
At http://www.thessayist.com we believe that “It is not what we get., rather what we contribute… that gives meaning to our lives.” http://bit.ly/ROA0K
I hope that! and will include a quickly management.
I found this nice blog and read a lot in it – so I will visit it in future one time a week to read in it.
That is the Phone I dream of….!
Never saw a so good Phone – I want it – I love it.
I would buy it here but you don´t get it here.
Greetings from Germany
Andreas

Being able to manage events – yay!
New feed (and presumably not being able to see people becoming friends with your friends anymore – one of the major losses of the new FB web design) – boo.
I’m reading a blog, reporting on a Tweet, which was written about a social network app for the iPhone.
I guess this is some sort of convergence?
yea.. now any site can pay nothing or next to nothing for inane writing by any idiot to draw flames from bored trolls.
I love the interweb.
Why can’t they release it in English and add the translations in an update?
Because America (and other primarily-English speaking languages) aren’t the center of the universe.
Because Facebook usage by English speaking people crushes all other languages by some margin:
http://www.nick...tistics-by.html
Of course, many people in the countries listed don’t speak English but the majority do or can atleast understand it.
Indeed, getting that kind of user-mass to live test the application could indeed help improve the application when new languages are rolled out.
Lastly, given your statement, at what point do you think your finished given you’re never going to do all languages.
No? Then why are you replying in english?
So a US centric company can’t get a US centric app up early for a US centric social network because some guy might want to use it in Afrikaans.
Makes perfect sense to me! God forbid Malta has to wait!
U.S. (which is not the only country that speaks english) is not the center of the universe, but it is the language that the app was written in. Since the app is completed in that language, there’s no real reason to make us wait for it.
I won’t hold my breathe waiting for Apple to approve this app.
looks like another interesting apps is coming.. can’t wait to see it running already.
does it include support for managing friends lists?
Facebook is a popular website and so with the popular iphone device the app will be just as popular.
With it being a free app I wont be showcasing it or giving it away on http://www.appgiveaway.com as we only promote and giveaway paid apps
*facepalm*
WTF? Why don’t you just type in the words, “SPAM. Click this link to my website. SPAM.”
It wouldn’t be any more obvious than what you just wrote.
Why doesn’t TC moderate for stuff like this?
cuz it cost money and/or time, and MG is off whipping up more crap about Twitter or Facebook.
It’s a lousy comments section, not like anybody will care about what’s written here tomorrow anyways.
About time they will have video up support, so can I get a refund for VideoUp and the other crappy FB video upload tools I tried? Also, when will FB have video chat integrated with its regular chat?
I thought this guy was pretty funny.

I hope it’s an improvement on the current amateurish app that’s already out there. If stability falls backwards then we’re screwed, the current app is only just stable enough.
Andy
What about “Groups” or “Pages” will the new app handle them as well?
Hope you can ‘hide’ friends from your Newsfeed. I have some friend (i’d love to ditch), that constantly post useless info.
The hide works fine online but there isn’t such a feature on the iPhone app.
