Well, Twitter didn’t win a Nobel Peace Prize for its role in getting the word out about the Iran election protests earlier this summer, but it did gain about 7 million new visitors in the month of June. Twitter’s website attracted a total of 44.5 million unique visitors worldwide in June, 2009, according to comScore.
Twitter’s worldwide audience grew a healthy 19 percent from May, 2009 (and an even healthier 1,460 percent from June, 2008, when its worldwide audience was just 2.9 million).
With 20 million of its visitors coming from the U.S., Twitter’s audience is now 55 percent international. ComScore now counts it as the No. 52 largest site in the world (bigger than ESPN, just shy of the BBC and Craigslist).
These estimates only count traffic to Twitter.com. Since more than half of Twitter users don’t even go to the Website, and instead use Twitter apps to consume and publish Tweets, Twitter’s total audience is even larger. But comScore provides a consistent measure of its growth.

One!
loser
“One!”
No.
“First!”
lmao had me laughing seeing a staff member do that.
Mr. Scoble is someone else’s staff
it looks like catching facebook isnt so far fetch
far fetch what?
100+ M total users is awesome. Wonder how long it would be before twitter would cross facebook
It’s not users, it’s visitors. i think the number of users is ~15M according to twitter’s own stats. visitors come from all around the web to the twitter site from links in news sites and blogs. not all of these users end up becoming members
Two!
It doesn’t look like it’s going to stop growing either.
Not as long as there are more celebrities to die
How many are spammers?
they count visitors, not number of accounts
There are spammers on twitter O_o
There are spammers everywhere, however since this is judging unique visitors and most spam accounts that I have noticed seem to be using automation and spacing such as HootSuite, then the numbers are a little bit less skewed.
Besides, Twitter did go through and do some house cleaning to help get rid of a bulk of those spam accounts not too long ago…
Now if they could only figure out how to make money wouldn’t that be great!
they’ll start selling their internal documents to the press
Twitter plans on developing itself as a platform instead of just an advertising engine in the typical sense. That is, they plan on offering subscription based services that business accounts could really utilize and try to keep the clean twitter interface, free personal accounts etc.
wow, those documents sold pretty fast!
I think alot might be spammers.
How many are leaving after using it once or twice, though? I think these numbers have to be insanely inflated with ghost accounts.
michael jackson died caused huge spikes of traffic. i don’t know about you guys, my twitter has gotten old already
Well at least the 44.5 Million is UNIQUE visitors, since I know many people carry more than one account. This is probably the most accurate way to judge Twitters true growth.
I am willing to bet those “ghost accounts” see some activity later on as Twitter keeps up this momentum and adds value to the service for businesses to engage with their customers.
I actually signed up just because someone invited me. Now the only time I sign in is when someone starts following me. I have probably sent about 5 tweets. I thought maybe I would start using it more someday, but lately I’ve been thinking that a lot less.
I count as a user in this graph. I wonder how many people are just like me. I know a least as many people who have dead accounts like me as I do real twitter users.
how many in facebook are ghost accounts? Mine is one!!! Havent used it since january. Assuming one subscribes to interesting things for him, Twitter is way less futile than Fb.
I wonder what they are thinking of now, they should be working on building on it. Maybe there own Twitter client? @sidewinder12s
Most people create a twitter account to see what the hype is all about and then never use it again. These numbers are severely inflated. and on top of that spammers account for a large number of these accounts not to mention entities with multiple accounts. Twitter is just riding the hype machine. It will all start to stabilize and die down in 8-12 months time. Most people dont have the time neither do they care to hear about someone else’ lives min by min. If you are outside of Silicone Valley can you name 5 people within your friends and family circle who use twitter regularly? I bet you can name 5 people anywhere who use facebook REGULARLY.
You make a good point RE people outside of my internet friends. The answer is not many at all.
Entre o riso e a lágrima quase sempre há apenas o nariz.
Alot are spammers, squatters, and people with “dead” accounts they made and haven’t or don’t plan on using. All social networks have this in their numbers, but just from the general analytics.. Twitter is on fast track to Greatness!

Accidentally messed up the previous link! Anyways, it’s a huge site with free Twitter backgrounds; good resource for anybody using Twitter.
Just had a conversation with my bro about Twitter. I tried to explain to him that its about selecting the content you want vs. having content forced upon you by email. With Twitter you can “Turn off the noise” or “Turn on the noise” its your choice. Just “Select” the noise thats right for you. Hehe
ya, but will it ever make any money?
Im going to take a shower,,,
Ops… I actually saw a “What are you doing?” pre-filled on this form.
Maybe TC should make this move. Change LEAVE A COMMENT for twitter’s “What are you doing?”.
Are you sure about your last paragraph? these stats include non-twitter users, those who come to browse twitter feeds from links in news sites and blogs. these are not representative of the number of users.
it would be interesting to see if these visitor statistics are followed by new signups for users
Congratulations Twitter. A clear sign that the little bird is maturing is that people argue with the stats. “Well maybe it is not exactly like… – and many just go there once and never again…” Gimme a break.
Almost ALL tweeps go there – than don’t come back because they don’t get it – then come back as they like to explore it further… and once they get it they stay. I started in 2007 – went away for a few weeks – came back…
So f*** those stats and T H I N K – If it serves a purpose for you – you use it – if it doesn’t you don’t.

You know sometimes I ask my self if Biz or Ev could support those “statistics” after all how do we really know if there is “44 million people” I bet money of those 44 million there is only 15 Million people that are true tweeting and not spamming.
that is a super high estimate. I would bet that no more then 2 million people are tweeting at least once a day. impressive, but not godly.
It would be nice if Twitter releases some users stats… like the number of users that logged in twitter (api or web) at least 10 times in the last 30 days…. this number I would take for the real number of active users (active or passive).
There’s a great blog about Twitter – keeps on top of the latest new from the Twitterverse in more than 140 characters! The blog is Tweetn.net – catchy name too!
For a more in depth look at June’s U.S. unique visitor data from Compete.com for Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, you should check out http://www.bool...9-traffic-data/
Twitter’s growth has not been remarkably steady – in fact it stalled at a plateau from April – May 2009.
What’s bs about this post?
Every month you guys add to the pile of free media for twitter ($50+ million, per one 3rd party report you repeated, right?).
Yet, our site the *2nd* fastest growing social network in the US per comScore, 2009, I wrote you guys a link to the emarketer.com report…and, no dice on any air time.
Seriously…the ONLY reason twitter is growing is b/c there isn’t a single startup that’s getting the tens of millions in free press they are.
The headline should be “getting 50 million in free ads on tv, print and radio will increase your traffic dramatically”.
sorry mate… but Twitter sounds a lot cooler than FunAdvice, you UI is ugly and you are just a copy of Yahoo Answers… do you have celebs posting questions ? Or big companys answering users questions on your site ? Just plain copy cat.
Twitter on the other hand really invented something new… for the people who got the ideia, it really changed the way they comunicate.
Sorry.
Jeremy, admit it though… Kool-Aid tastes a lot better than sour grapes.
Number of spammers are on an increase at all the networking sites. So if we all are wise enough to consider that there are many spammers on twitter then why we forget the competition( other sites) also has more or less the same set of users consisting of spam.
So the number anyhow balances each other. I agree to a point that growth rate cannot be compared but actual number of users can surely be compared. So congratulations twitter for crossing the mark though actual active genuine users might be lot lesser.

Twitter is pretty much a huge waste of time for the masses of mindless sheep looking for a purpose in life.
Even the clueless founders still tweet about what they are doing albeit in a less direct way. (eg, ‘..why does my new house not fit all the stuff from my old house..?’
I got your user stats right here! No, seriously. I have Twitter user account growth stats from running Friend Or Follow. I need to update them for last month though.
http://friendor...er-user-growth/
I could probably run stats based on how many updates people have and when they tweeted last to get an idea of how many accounts are actually active.
very cool dusty. now show us the 100 least followed people on twitter.
Has anyone taken a look at their web stats lately? Twitter has certainly sent a great deal of site visitors my way, and most of them are following links to articles I have written on my site. I don’t really post pointless tweets. I only promote my content. People either are interested or they aren’t.
I have definitely qualified and converted some folks who found me and connected with me via Twitter. Direct sales and JV opportunities. I likey!!!
wtf is with comscore? why can’t anyone measure mobile users? i do agree that lots of twitter users are spam. i’m guessing 25% these days but still, i bet 65 mil is the true number, not 40.
It’s good if you have something to say all the time. I can’t think of stuff to twitter about all the time.
Um, that would include me!
Is it just me, or can you only leave a comment here using Facebook Connect OR with the Twitter link, but not both at the same time?
They do seem like duplicate efforts to me anyway.
Twitter is all over the radio and newspapers here in the UK and generating a lot of interest. Many of my friends have signed up recently to see what it’s about!
The majority aren’t familiar with desktop clients so opt for the Web interface which doesn’t exactly offer the best value and portrayal of the service!
And those who send texts should also be included!
Hmm, looking promising. Thanks
Most of people are quiting twitter because of SPAM.
Twitter will lose now or after
Does “traffic to Twitter.com” include traffic to the API, which sits on the primary www domain? If so, that would include traffic from desktop clients and bots.
Twitter is here to stay. Every month more and more people are figuring out how to use it in a way that they like.
Every month new apps are being built that enhances the users experience. New experiences are being created by these new apps and making it more and more enjoyable.
The great thing about Twitter is that it can be a completely different experience from one user to another.
Some like to have big profiles and the experience that goes with it, while others prefer small profiles where they follow their friends and a few celebrities.
When viewed this way – its a social media that can be all things to all people.
If you own a business – there is no better vehicle in social media to – Drive Traffic, Offer Customer support, Public Relations, Network etc.
If you own a business and your not on Twitter you are missing out. Your customers are looking for you there.
For those who constantly use the “SPAM” comments as the killer of Twitter – its up to the user to see those messages – they are easily blocked and Twitter is doing as good of job as ever in removing them.
Those who compare it to Facebook are missing the point. Facebook is used by most to connect with old friends. Its rare to make new friends with Facebook. Twitter is the exact opposite.
My 2 cents,
Sean Malarkey
The increase in twitter traffic measured by comScore is mirrored by the frequency with which Twitter is linked to in email campaigns. See the graph of when twitter surpassed facebook as the most linked to website in email marketing:
