Not sure how I feel about handshakes. When I think about it, it does seem a bit unsanitary (especially considering that it involves our hands, which are very dirty...it would be almost better to give a tap on the shoulder or something).

That said, it's very ingrained in our culture and I can see how people could take it as rude or standoffish if you declined to "shake." So...I think it's probably best - as you said - to shake and then wash.

292 people died so far out of a current 300 million people in the U.S.? What is that, like a hundredth of 1 percent?

1 death vs 11,803 current live births per day...

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!

Stop smoking and drinking, eat right and you will be able to live through this 'pandemic' (unless of course, like previously stated, you are just one of those susceptible people a lot of us have known).

I vividly remember a meeting in which the man I was having the meeting with refused to shake my hand stating it was for hygienic reasons. The feeling it gave me I will remember for quite some time. I felt belittled, embarrassed, not good enough and all I could think about was how soon could I get out of the room. I obviously chose not to do any further business with the creep. Cheers

Michael, Being opposed to handshaking is dumb. I understand some people just like to be iconoclastic, just to be "cool".

How about taking on the American habit of asking "how are you doing?"? This makes more sense. Most people who ask this, don't really mean to be asking for a status update.

There's nothing barbaric about a handshake. It's a simple, real human contact in an ever increasingly separated world. Perhaps you should discuss with some close friend or counselor why you're so insecure. Man up!

Logically, I agree with you about avoiding spreading disease. So wash your hands.

Good luck.

my wife and I pretty much stopped handshakes when our first kid was born. This, coupled with frequent hand washing, contributed to him not being sick until he was almost 1 1/2 years old, while most of our friends kids were sick 3 -4 times a year.

Kids constantly put their hands in their mouth. If you get germs from someone else, then go play with your kids, good chance they get sick. 1 + 1 = 2

Anyone over the age of 35 isn't allowed to fistbump. It looks ridiculous. Suck it up and shake a hand like grown people do. Get over your phobia.

And a swine flu reference, geezus. Hilarious.

Techcrunch should reverse the posting order of comments so that the most recent show up at the top. Check out TED.

It’s more fun. It democratizes commenting. Everybody gets a little airtime. The way it is now, on highly commented blogs, the first comments get all the attention and the end comments get no attention. It's like going to the cafeteria and the first guy gets all the food while the rest just get to watch.

On low commented blogs it's not relevant. On highly commented blogs it's clearly a violation of the Second Amendment.
