I’ve been in London for two weeks pretending to be part of the Traveling Geeks contingent of bloggers. But really I’ve been doing some deep investigative work on this whole Last.fm scandal.
I showed up at their offices and guess what I found? A pile of servers sitting in a corner waiting to be delivered to the RIAA. Sure, they said they were just old servers… likely story.

I also discovered that Last.fm is getting into a new business: Michael Arrington Target Practice Kits ™. I got a demo in the office (see video below). Ev, can I put you down for a case?
michael fires me from sarah lacy on Vimeo.

Great title…not all that great a video i’m afraid :-/
Yeah… I wonder what they are thinking with the “Michael Arrington Target Practice Kits” … this does say alot.
Horrible horrible shot, imo.
Oh! Where can I buy those Michael Arrington Target Practice Kits ™… I’ll take 10!
There was a lot of love in that room. It conveyed.
Shooting Michael Arrington is a normal team building activity in the valley?
Work on improving the video quality, this was really hard to watch.
terrible terrible post. not TC worthy at all. Arrington should be playing target practice on Sarah if you ask me.
What is Sarah tryin to tell us with this horrible video and post!!!
This isnt news. This is a self-promoting video (with horrible quality) with not even so much as a rumor to share about Last.fm. Newsflash! Last.fm has servers sitting in a pile that someone took a picture of and made up an out-of-context caption to go with it that sounded sensational! And the same person shot a Nerf gun at a pic of Michael Arrington! What a waste of time, given what the title made me expect.
Hey guys! I went to London! And met with the Last.fm guys! And shot a toy gun at a picture of my boss!
…
Loved Lacey’s book. It helped me make the move from open source to web 2.0.
Since then I’ve been disappointed in her work, commentary, etc. Not a lot of substance the past year+
You’re still a noob.
If you don’t like this article, post your own investigative story. BTW, if you don’t like it, who cares? QQ more! haha.
web 2.0 open source rocks. you make no sense.
fantasy murders of real people are so much fun.
Real murders of fantasy people are even funner!
http://www.ther...raveling_geeks/
ah. cool. so this fantasy murder was brought to you by UK taxpayers. awesome.
That fantasy Arrington looks only 5feet tall. If you want to shoot him in the heart, aim higher.
yay! fun!
Instead of shooting Mike, they should first learn how to shoot the video.
1 girl 15 laughing guys, typical
Grrrrrrr……… I made a typo.
Beware of irony?
must be: Beware of irony!
Gosh…just realized i’ve been sending data to RIAA and i didn’t had any clue!!!
i mean i have 4 servers piled up somewhere in my basement…i don’t work for last.fm but…i understand that keeping older hardware somewhere means sending data to someone for sure, uh?
luckily this is just TechCrunch…you know, it’s like Santa Claus everybody talk of him, but nobody really believes him…
So this is what it’s like when anyone with a Flip and a keyboard gets to post to TechCrunch? Somewhere, there’s a twinkle in the eye of the freshman editor of their school’s “gadgets and gizmos” column, daring to dream, the bar lowered to just-ever-so-close to their level.
I have higher (or different?) expectations of TechCrunch than this article delivers.
Sarah Lacy TV??? WTF???
(and boring as hell…)
Hey, guess what, piles of junk in the Last.fm office is pretty usual. it’s a bunch of (lovely) but very untidy guys.
haha @ everyone getting butt hurt over the silly nature of this. I COME TO TECHCRUNCH FOR SERIOUS NEWS I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS.
I shot the sheriff – but I did not shoot the deputy.
Step it up a notch will’ya TC? U guys want to be serious journalists – sure why not – but this does not cut it.
God I love this vendetta series of last.fm posts
Maybe she needed to write off the trip for tax purposes?
LIGHTWEIGHT POST. LIGHTWEIGHT POST. LIGHTWEIGHT POST.
c’mon, don’t waste our collective times hauling us in to read and watch banal stuff like this.
I don’t get it.
Well, I found it amusing anyway
Just dreadful. Please promise you won’t post things like this ever again? That “old servers” joke just put a dent to TechCrunch’s otherwise great & serious investigation.
oh LOOK!!!
it’s drivel from an SF Socialite! Shocking!
arrington, you should stop slamming last.fm without actual news. if you hired someone with actual clout & prowess, you would likely find out something actually newsworthy about both Last.FM and the RIAA…
@Xiola Bleu
It wasn’t slamming Last.fm, dumbass. It was a lighthearted joke, filmed at Last.fm, with their permission.
I know that because, as you’ll see from the video, it was me who filmed it. My pro-Last.fm credentials are pretty solid. As, by the way, are Sarah Lacy’s reporting credentials / clout.
Not everything has to be about hard news. Sometimes it’s about perspective.
Btw, your caPS LOck key seems to be broken.
PAUL THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR STUPID LIGHTHEARTED NEWS and frankly..
Arrington should protect his cred or else this whole TC thing will devolve into a gossip site. I have other links for that. Most of his readers likely also have other feeds for that kind of fun.
OH WAIT ONE MORE THING OMG MY CAPS LOCK WON’T TURN OFF I’M SUCH A DUMBASS WHERE’S THE BUTTON
and you’re right, i have no sense of humor. people who know me say it all the time.
look, paul, don’t take it so hard. I go to techcrunch for news. From the looks of these comments, many other readers also come here for news. this video and article was rejected by TC readers.
I commented, because i have my own relationship with this publication. you called me a dumbass. very pro.
Like it or not, while she may be adorable, Sarah Lacy annoys me, and she is definitely not the most ideal blogger to cover Music-Tech companies, TC can do much better – or are you trying to be funny again (?)
hello paul – indeed tech crunch is after last.fm.
And so is the RIAA (all caps)
and Sarah Lacy, like it or not, is still an annoying socialite.
My basic requirement for engaging with even the most ill-informed commenters is that their replies could at least pass a Turing test.
Sorry, Xiola, I’m out.
