12seconds Lays An iPhone Video Messenger On Top Of Twitter’s Social Graph
by MG Siegler on July 10, 2009

picture-7312seconds has had an iPhone app for a while now. Unfortunately, it was fairly crippled because iPhones couldn’t shoot video, so you had to take still pictures and make 12 second collages. Now, with the iPhone 3GS you can shoot video. And so 12seconds is making its app a whole lot better.

Unveiled today at our Real-Time Stream CrunchUp event, the “12seconds Video Messenger for Twitter”, is an app that’s all about sending short video messages to your friends. And while 12seconds already has a social graph of its own from its website, it understands that Twitter’s social graph is much larger — and so it’s laying this new app on top of that.

Basically, how it works is that you record a video and then select the friend (or friends) you wish to send it to. This friend is then sent a direct message through Twitter with a link to the video. Or if they have the app also, it comes in through there. This is different than a lot of the current Twitter video offerings out there in that it has a main focus on messaging between smaller groups of people rather than the public, though you can do that too. And this app utilizes the iPhone 3.0 software’s new Push Notifications to let you know when you have a new video to view.

12seconds undoubtedly hopes to make use of the new iPhone 3.1 SDK that was just released to developers. It is rumored to have some subtle changes to the way it allows apps to handle video.

And while Twitter is the key social graph that 12seconds is targeting with this app, it will eventually roll integration with other social networks as well, including the big one, Facebook.

The app should be available soon in the App Store.

  • This looks cool. I like the 12 second limit!

When is it supposed to come out?

  • Heard about this for sometime now… saw it demo’ed for the first time today. I am drooling. this actually might be THE reason for me to convert to AT&T and get an iphone. Video Messaging that fast! WIN WIN!

  • btw luv ur app b/c it seriously appears idiot proof, @kspidel’s response,”wow Jen that means u might use it” hmmm

  • WHAT is with the iPhone, I cant shoot more than 2 secods of video before it says its too large to send via MMS

Stupid iPhone, I could set my video qual on a nokia , but this jobsworthPhone seems unable to allow me to select something suitable to send via carrier. 12 secs might be good, but I met a girl tonight who could burp longer than that. So unless they can take the video and post to twitter, facebook, myspace, youtube , blog and whoever why ?

    • The app works solely through your data connection (not through MMS) and it won’t care what carrier you’re on so you as long as you have a connection, you’ll be able to use this app.

The time limit makes for a manageable sized video that you can send relatively quickly and through 12seconds, can send to just an individual or small group, or to all your connected networks on the site.

    • That is a limitation imposed by the carriers on MMS, it’s not a problem with the iPhone.

  • This app is simple and beautifully designed. The use of the native tilt function for recording is a nice feature, and I like the way the recorder beeps at me, making it easier to keep track of my video length. I love the original 12seconds iPhone app, and will continue to use it in locations where 3G is not available. Well done Team 12!

  • I saw the demo on ustream. This thing looks pretty sweet!

It would be cool if it also posts to the 12seconds site which could redistribute it anywhere, including their API. It kind of looked like that was possible. Though I like the quick and more private one to one messaging ability too.

I was skeptical of the time limit at first, but it seems perfect for video messaging. It speeds everything up. Good job guys! When will it be in the app store? Anyone know?

    • In addition to little icons for all your favorite people, the app also has an icon for Twitter/Public. If you hit that icon, it’ll post to 12seconds and to any account you have linked to it (Twitter/Facebook) as if you posted the video publicly to the site. This will allow you to send private messages to friends and post public videos to the site with this app.

  • looks pretty slick. 12 seconds has a great thing going and an updated iphone app will work even better.

  • I’m a fan of 12seconds and am excited for the iPhone app! Nice job, y’all.

  • so it just records video and sends a link via DM? no big deal surely?

  • 12seconds guys Dave and Sol are awesome. Interviewed David for a story if anyone is interested in reading about their story: http://www.stor...CategoryId=1573

  • 12 seconds of video is too short. I thought I’d find a use for them, but it’s just not enough time. With YouTube uploads in place and Facebook uploads on the way, surely someone will integrated Twitter notifications and squeeze 12s out.

“rumored to have some subtle changes to the way it allows apps to handle video.”

Yeah, that subtly is the ability to work with recorded video files.

  • this is great and I like 12seconds.tv
