Recap: you're complaining because a free platform can leave you reaching over 5000 "friends", right?

I could suggest to you several things like

1) Reconsider the meaning of "friend" word (and discover where is the real "absurdity"
2) Spend more in real life than the facebook life
3) Ask fb to pay for a no-limit account
4) Stop using fb and use only myspace

Some people would complain for anything to write a post...

Why would you want to fan a commoner? Why would you want to be a fan of a friend? I don't get it. Why feed the princess in your peer group (we all have one) why feed their ego (then complain about it behind her back).

MYSPACE WORKS??? REALLY? Did not read the rest of the post, and am considering unsubscribing to tech crunch just for even beginning to claim that myspace is more functional than facebook. Myspace has consistent errors. It's just common practice to click through errors on that website.

Michael,

Next time, read your own rant before you post it. You've already answered your own question, here. Please excuse the oversimplifications about to ensue, but this is, of course, a blog comment - not a dissertation.

FACEBOOK ALREADY HAS A FOLLOW-TYPE MODEL. IT'S THE FREAKIN' FAN PAGE.

Facebook is attempting to offer the 'best' of both e-socialization models (one-way and two-way) in the same portal. Do you honestly have more than 5,000 people in your life that you want basic, daily-life information from on a regular (daily to weekly) basis?? I highly doubt so. The *key* word is "FROM." To Facebook, the definition of a 'friend' in the context of this discussion is an individual with which you desire to EXCHANGE information (id est, send AND RECEIVE), not just SHARE information (id est, send ONLY).

Last I checked, technology development still follows purpose. Comparing Facebook with Google is a fallacy of epic proportions. They each serve two different markets with two distinct purposes using two completely different interfaces and design objectives. Read each organization's respective mission statement if you have any doubt.

Google's purpose is to acquire, organize, and present information (not merely *social* information) in a universal and efficient delivery platform. Based on the purpose, their design is extensible and capable of returning a large number of records in response to relatively simple queries.

In Facebook's case, the purpose is to create a social community reaching beyond geographical boundaries by providing near-realtime bidirectional social information updates across a group of (supposedly) close and socially interactive individuals using a rich-media interface. Because of the purpose, the design will have limitations. They are arranging a large amount of interrelated information and presenting it in a dynamic interface. The front end can only allocate so much memory per session, thus it can only tolerate a query result of a certain size.

Technology design is as much about compromise as it is about innovation. What isn't possible today *might* be possible tomorrow, but the implementation has to deliver on today's certainties - not tomorrow's promises. Facebook might be able to support more 'friends' in the future, but for now they have determined that's all they can handle.

Bottom line: It appears that you are looking to use Facebook friends for a purpose other than the creators intended. If your purpose doesn't fit the application's design, go find another application (Facebook's fan page - or Twitter) or build one yourself.

Dear Michael,

"The fact that there are limits at all on connections is absurd". Trying to have more than 5 000 so-called friends on a social platform, and refusing to create a Fan page, is absurd.
You just ruin the concept behind Facebook "Connect with your Friends". Friends, dude, not people who you've never met and who wants to be connected somehow to you.
I'm just saying that I don't get the idea behind the will to have thousands and thousands of people connected to you. To me, you're like a brand now and therefore, people who are willing to follow you should be considered as fans.... or any words other than friends. Please.

5000 friends is just too much. Unless you want to complain for complaints sake, It is not practically possible to have that much friends or people you know. Are you a celebrity or something ? Do you ask random people to add to your facebook. You sound absurd...

What the author doesn't seem to grasp is that Facebook isn't a popularity contest like Myspace. The reason Myspace allows the author to have all his "friends" is because the architecture of the site is completely different. With Facebook you're receiving feeds from all of your friends. Much like Robert stated, the reason your page isn't working is because you don't actually know these 5000 people, you just want to collect as many as possible because that how it worked on Myspace. I would assume that an author for a tech site would know how an application worked before they took the time to bash it but apparently not. Maybe going back to Myspace would be the right thing to do if a popularity contest is what you want.

As a professional who use online apps and software all day I find unstable applications frustrating. It seriously dilutes good feelings for the brand. Even though Facebook is free, how long will users put up with this?

Why don't you people who have thousands of friends just start up a second account. You could call it 'Me 2'.

Then you could friend yourself.

Oh I get out quite a bit and have hmmmm about 30 real close friends.
I'm just not that insecure to feel the need to prove it to the world. And frankly I don't want you to see who I am friends with.

Gasp! Ditch the idea of friends? But what of the beloved social graph?

I am having the exact same issue Mike. Let me know if Facebook is able to do anything about this. I am in the same situation with 5,000 friends, and countless requests pending. This is quite annoying because while I try to keep my fan pages low, there are a few that I would like to join, and thus now can't.

Totally agree with your comment. Just made my first event yesterday, ran through my entire friends list and selected a good portion, to find it didn't update. Then went back through 5-7 at a time. :( SO painful.

And then I wanted to send some msgs to people outside my friends network about the event, but after sending 7-8 messages, I was banned from FB from sending any more messages 'for an undetermined amount of time' because I triggered an automatic 'spam protection' mechanism. And I was writing individual messages, not copying-pasting one message.

Just left a really bad taste in my mouth. :(

it's called an iframe app, little bit harder as there are many more bugs/issues to deal with but well worth it in the end.
