I'm sorry, but this writer makes no sense at all. He is trying to prove that because Sprint and Palm now have their distribution of Pre's better under control that somehow, this implies they are not selling that many Pre's. And this is based on contacting 50 out of about 1500 Sprint stores. Obviously, if they have more Pre's in stock, then they should be able to sell more than if they are not in stock.

Then he says that only 40% agreed to share sales numbers (which is about 20 stores). I'm sorry, but that's not a very good sampling. But even then he says "33% of stores reported sales of 10-20 units, with 16% reporting 20-30." And what about the other 51% of the stores? I guess they are either selling less than 10 or more than 30 units per week. Even given his small statistical sampling, lets say that they are selling 20 phones a week. With 13 weeks in a quarter, the 1500 stores will sell 20x13x1500 = 390K phones in the first quarter. That doesn't take into account the fact that first and second week sales far exceeded that or that Sprint actually has 20,000 distribution points that go way beyond the 1500 stores (See http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/techbeat/archives/2008/01/sprints_store_c.html). Many people will go to Best Buy, Radio Shack, mall Kiosks, etc to purchase their Pre to avoid the rebate issue. And soon these should be available online! And the Pre is now becoming available through numerous Wal-marts(http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=11084519). So, will Sprint sell a million Pre's in the first quarter? I have every reason to believe they will.

I just called 1000 Apple stores and they all had iPhones available. So I guess the iPhone isn't selling very well. That's essentially the logic that's being used here folks.

@ junkyard wars
You my friend, are an idiot. First, Nearly every UK phone has a comperable US phone. Yes, alot of times Korea and smaller markets get new technology first because its easier to implement, but there are plenty of phones in the US market with the specs you listed, they just aren't necessarily specs we as consumers are most interested in.

And second, don't pretend like the US is the only place with phone contracts. You don't HAVE to have a contract to buy any of these phones, but you play a premium to get them. Go check O2s website. It works the same way. You pay full price for a phone with no contract, or you get heavy discounts for accepting a contract. Do a little homework before you come on the "interwebz" to throw down, or at least take your head out of your ass.

@Junyard Wars: What an arrogant twit you are. iPhone a junk phone? Please, it can do far more than any European phone simply based on the apps available, and its more powerful OS. Also, try staying up with things if you are going to post on a tech site - the new iphone has video, and is superior to any other video out there due to ones ability to edit it right in this hand held computer, oh, and it also has 10's of thousands of apps available - with many of them being quite useful and not just games! And the whole thing about "overheating" has been dismissed as BS... so move on.

Excuse me nitwit - The European Union is not a country so in fact the US is the third largest cell phone market. The EU is a cell phone mess because each country in the EU controls its own cell phone market making the EU a mobile nightmare and not a unified market.

Well the release date may have had more to do with the fact that Palms year end is at the end of March and they stated over and over that the release date would be in the second quarter. Releasing it a few days before iPhone announcement, release and the original iPhone contracts were more than likely an after thought.

There is no way that Palm could have kept up with demand close to that of the iPhone and knew it. Even Apple is now stating that there maybe shortages in the near future do to supply problems. The fact is that Apple had those phones ready to ship when they announced, Palm didn't. I really wonder how many people were put off by the fact that the phone wasn't in stock.

As far as this "study", any study can be fixed to get the outcome you are looking for. All it would take is focusing on smaller markets or where Sprint has the lowest amount of members. Plus talking to a Rep on a phone is really going to give you great results. In most cases they will lie one way or another. I'm sure you could do the same with Apple stores and get the same results. For example I've been in both the local sprint stores and they were sold out with a waiting list they said was at around 30. Been to two Best Buys and they also were sold out with waiting lists. One rep at BB pulled out the list and it was around 5 pages and there seemed to be between 15 to 20 per page. I asked them if they had any iPhones and he pointed to one of the locked storage bins and said it was full. I would really be surprised if the Apple numbers are based on retail sells and wouldn't be surprised if it was a million shipped.

Unfortunately Sprint and Palm have BOTCHED the release and the marketing of this fine product.
I have been waiting for a unit for over a month, and finally went to the store for the fifth time in over 6 weeks and they gave me one.
I am thoroughly disgusted with the way these units were released. Palm should have done a better job of planning production and Sprint is always behind the times technologically and when it comes to customer service and satisfaction they are hands down the industry LOSERS!
I have three friends who abandoned their places on the list to get a Palm Pre and bought iPhones... This is the price Sprint and Palm paid for extremely poor planning, short sightedness and terrible customer service.
I finally have one now and I am eager to put it to the test, time will tell if the phone is all that it was hyped to be and if Sprint lives up to their obligations long term (I have my doubts)

I read that report too, and it's a case of a consultant itching to put out bad news without even review his numbers. The report goes on state that the stores are averaging around 20 sales of Pres a week and how bad it is compared to Apple store sales. What he doesn't mention is that including affiliated Sprint Stores, there are over 4000 Sprint stores in the US, compared to 200 Apple stores. And simple math of 4000 x 20 x 12 weeks equals 960,000 sold right on the million target...not including Best Buy & Radio Shack & Telesales (which that had to discontinue to keep the product stocked in stores)...hmmm....maybe he should look at his on reporting a bit closer before spitting out such a negative piece.

On the contrary, Palm Pre is selling VERY WELL!

What Apple doesn't want you to know is how many iPhone 3Gs they sold in the U.S.A. alone. Because the 1,000,000 units of iPhone 3Gs accounts for the 8 countries they were sold in during it's first release.

Meanwhile, Palm Pre was only released in one single country (US) to already hit 400,000 units sold! Do your math and see what 15,000 units manufactured per day means in several months.

If we were to use the iPhone 3G's sales last year for reference, then these countries would have included in the order of highest to lowest sales: US (600k), Japan (70k), Germany (69k), France (67k), Spain (55k), UK (29k), Canada (16k), and Mexico (15k).

Using the value above and assuming there are a potential 600k users in the US alone willing to buy and can afford smartphones in this bad ecomony, consider this estimate:

If Palm Pre sold 400k units this year in the US alone, then iPhone 3Gs may have only sold 200k or certainly less than the units Palm Pre sold in the US. If Apple had been proud to announce the number of iPhone 3Gs sold, why don't they disclose exactly how many they sold in the US alone? Then you can compare apples to apples.

Considering Apple only has 200 apples retail stores across the country against Sprint's 4000 retail stores nationally (not to mention Best Buys, Radio Shack, and Wallmart stores), it's no wonder Apple has to combine all 8 countries to form a total of 1 million units sold to look good for the public.

Anyway, Palm Pre is set to sell to Europe and the UK now, so you'll get a better picture of just how successful Palm Pre sales really are doing. 400,000 now..several million more in the pipeline for the next 7 countries for comparison.

The waitlist doesn't obligate you to buy. So yes they have a "waitlist" -- but the stores compete to get to "A" status -- meaning if you are in the store ready to buy, they may pre-empt a waitlister if he/she doesn't come in by a certain amount of time.
