Childish pissing match. Wouldn't it be easier and smarter to just qualify the PR you are already giving startups in monetary terms (which is already over $1M); up the ad-avails winning startups receive pre and post event; and then then do something different, something they can't do, like create a startups-promoting-startups widget campaign? All this double-double does is dilute your ad values with each ratchet since your commit has to run over the exact same run length (say 3 months), while your site/network growth is flat or plus just a few points.

Well, as long as you continue to get good press and readership beating up DEMO, I don't see why you shouldn't continue to sling mud. I don't think I would have given your conference even a glance without the conflict that you've been stirring up. It makes for "good tv", kind of in the way many of the trashy reality shows have been successful. I didn't attend TC50 last year but if you follow up with something of good content and lasting value then 'hat's off'.

The story sounded a little whiney to me, TC50 already occupies the high road, yet has taken the bait and did the one thing you don't do - diss your competitors - makes you appear a little weak and unsure of yourself. Let the market decide (looks like it already has) and give startups some credit to know that $2m of nothing is actually nothing. They'll see through it. If they still want to spend the $20k then that is their choice. If it leads to funding then its a very small investment for them.

I think you guys are doing good enough by not asking for signing up fee and making it another money spinning event. There is no need to slug it out with them over prize money, after all not everyone is going to get it, hence your program helps a majority of peeople who join.

I don't get the preoccupation with killing DEMO. For some start ups, especially lazy big companies launching a new product -- DEMO is great. For those startups to can eek together the 20,000, it's still a good platform to reach press and create some decent buzz.

Having launched one company at DEMO and one company at TC40 (the first one), I agree that the TC model is better for startups. However, I think both are well produced, provide a solid platform for their participants, and I believe there's a place for both.

I agree with many of the commenters that all the ad bonus seems ambiguous, but if you're a start-up who is motivated by a prize in rate-card banner ads, you have a lot bigger problems ahead.

Still, the competition between TC50 and DEMO is proving itself a win for entrepreneurs, regardless of the motivation behind it. Kudos, Michael, for stepping up the prize and working to keep TC50 the premier event.
