Yesterday, we wrote about what Facebook was planning for the next major release of its iPhone app, version 3.0. The big update will contain 15 new features, probably none bigger than the addition of event management to the app, finally. But there was one thing Facebook developer Joe Hewitt didn’t mention yesterday, and it’s a big one: Video uploads from the iPhone 3GS.
Hewitt just started working on the feature yesterday, thinking it would be something that would come in the next release, after this one. But he was surprised at how quickly he was able to get it up and running and so he tweeted out today, “3GS video uploading for the Facebook iPhone app is a go — didn’t plan to include it in the 3.0 update, but it was really easy to code.”
This is excellent news as it gives iPhone 3GS owners another easy outlet to upload video to. We’ve already detailed how simple it is to upload to YouTube from the device, and how doing so from the new Kyte app gives you great video quality. The iPhone 3GS is simply awesome as a mobile video device, and Facebook is an excellent platform for sharing video amongst friends.
Additionally, we’ve heard talk the new iPhone 3.1 beta software which was just released to developers the other day, has some new functionality that should make video uploads even easier. Apparently, the device will be able to change the quality of the video getting uploaded based on your available bandwidth to optimize for the uploads.

Facebook is now attacking another Google stronghold: YouTube!
I admire facebook a lot and they seem to be an amazing company and have such a huge potential. But I’m worried about how they’ll monetize it and pay for all this growth. They can’t go on and sell equity forever.
If this video upload takes off for them, they’ll have to spend even more money, that they don’t have, on bandwidth and storage!
Best of luck guys and kick some Google butt!
I’d love for it to get push notifications…altho it’s not a huge feature as facebook can email you
Yeah, I think we’d all love to see that but he said yesterday that won’t be in this release, but look for it in the future.
That is awesome news! The next Facebook iPhone app is going to rock!
Crucial.
Can’t wait to get an update!
Good night kyte, qik etc.
And 12 seconds and Seesmic and a ton of others. Great apps on their own but not necessary. Next up: figuring out how to tell 200 million people that Facebook updates are really a giant Twitter.
That is going to be crazy expensive to maintain. I barely see people uploading video now, but video will dominate the site when this happens.
Awesome. Been waiting for this!!
Am I the only one that would like to see Facebook include “Groups” in this next version of the iPhone app?
Yes.
pretty much
Not very good times for Apple, Steve Jobs is not unfortunately in good shape. We all hope he improves and lead Apple soon again.

It looks like a pretty cool app. To be honest I have never bothered with Facebook just Twitter.
Hold the presses!! iPhone finally catches up to my 2 year old T-Mobile Wing!!
And yet your T-Mobile Wing is still irrelevant to the discussion. Why do iPhone haters still persist? Do iPhone users troll posts all day and all night? Geez.
One of these days MG is gonna go postal on one of these instigators.
Awesome app. now i can share videos from my iPhone directly.
This update is over due.
Here is a video Joe uploaded to Facebook via the iPhone 3GS

Nice!
well done ..!! work very well.
cant wait to see it happen.
Hope they do justice to “Easy to code” feature !!
I’m hoping they’ve fixed the two major bugs with the client as well – which might make it a reasonable application.
1. The news feed on the iPhone fails to show you half of the updates that can be seen from the main website.
2. When scrolling down the updates on the iPhone, several of them are repeated.
If they don’t, then you might as well just stick with the main website.
Another reason to upgrade my iPhone..
facebook for windows mobile has had video uploading since version 1.
If you are uploading videos to Facebook from your Mac desktop, try VideoUpLink. It will let you upload multiple videos and reduce their size before uploading them for quicker uploads.

The only downside to the Facebook 3.0 iPhone app at the moment is that you cannot post video to your Facebook Fan Page from your iPhone.
If I’m wrong about this, please let me know.
From what I understand, you can post a video to your Facebook profile from Facebook 3.0, but not to your Facebook Fan Page.
