It’s been a big day for Facebook, with news earlier this morning that the social network will soon be totally revamping its privacy settings and making it easier to share with the entire web. Now developer Joe Hewitt, who is responsible for Facebook’s massively popular iPhone application, has posted a note to the site describing some of the new features we can expect from the latest iteration of the app, which he says is “98% done”. Hewitt doesn’t give an exact release date, but we can likely expect it very soon.
From Hewitt’s post:
1. The “new” News Feed
2. Like
3. Events (including the ability to RSVP)
4. Notes
5. Pages
6. Create new photo albums
7. Upload photos to any album
8. Zoom into photos
9. Easier photo tagging
10. Profile Pictures albums
11. A new home screen for easy access to all your stuff, search, and notifications
12. Add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen
13. Better Notifications (they link to the comments so you can reply)
14. Quickly call or text people right from the Friends page
15. Messages you are typing will be restored if you quit or are interrupted by a phone call
All of these will be welcome additions, particularly the ability to view and respond to events listings, which were oddly missing in the iPhone Facebook app until now (I routinely found myself having to access the web version of the site in order to look up details). Unfortunately, Hewitt writes that Push notifications, which Apple enabled with the release of the iPhone 3.0 update, will not make it into this release — we’ll have to wait for the next point update later this summer.
Update: Hewitt has provided us with some screenshots of the upcoming app. Looks like a big improvement.

They should make it sync contact pictures and birthdays with your phone. Blackberry does that.
There’s an app for that. Fex.
That is the main thing I was hoping they would announce. Too bad
Being able to sync phone numbers with Facebook’s address book would be so useful…
there’s a greasemonkey script that will let you export your facebook contacts into an .xml. You can import that file into your google contacts, then sync your iphone with your google contacts, and there you go.
Events is the best app.
Why is that? How are you planning to use it?
I use this application religiously. When are they going to introduce the 3.0 notify feature so that I can finally unsubscribe from my FB SMS alerts?
NM, I just read the rest of the article.
Looking forward to its launch. Would like to download and check it out.
This is awesome! Really looking forward to this. Hopefully will be anytime sooner.
events events events events events
I guess that is all you cared for!
MG: did you see they are adding events? I’m excited too. What do you plan to do with it? I have some people who, believe or not, so I’m wondering how to involve them in my events.
“What do you plan to do with it? ”
I guess, you know, plan events? Dipshit.
Maybe my post will be interesting for any fresh Android users – You also finally have an Android Facebook App.
We have just placed an 0.9 BETA for our Facebook client (Babbler) in Android Market yesterday.
We’re preparing the app for a full, official launch in the next copule of days. It would be a great asset for us, if any of You would like to give it a try, and help us with making it even better that it is now. Please check it out here: http://www.cyrk...414153141398519
And feel free to send us any comments, requests for changes or additions, here on Babbler’s Facebook profile:

Very excited that I’ll finally be able to like items from my iPhone, plus add notes & upload to other albums!
Push would be cool to have as well, especially with Facebook chat (which I’m starting to use more than any other program save Skype).
Hopefully they don’t forget to enable landscape mode, as this skinny guy has huge basketball thumbs. :-)
Beejive lets you do facebook chat, and has push notifications to boot.
Beejive crashes too much
Uploading videos?
Yeah, it’s a must!
Absolutely need video uploading! Couldv’e used it yesterday!
Push Notifications should be in this release, though the UI is a definite improvement. I’m excited.
Location?
Location isn’t even a feature of Facebook. So, it wouldn’t really find a home in the iPhone app. I guess they could do something like on twitter and add a link to your status update but that’s not very Facebook like.
The UI is a much needed improvement. Now if only they could get the Push Notifications!
cant wait for push, looks like itll still be a nice improvement though
No video posting?
Holy crap…

Batteries overheating and maybe exploding!
I LOVE the 3GS: can’t change the battery, but it explodes by itself — what a relief.
And they don’t even have a basic app for Android!
Finally, maybe they’ll let us administer pages from the app too. Fingers crossed!
This app is the only reason I miss my iPhone after switching to the Pre. I am hoping we can get a great facebook app going once the SDK is “officially” released.
This new app looks gorgeous
What no video uploading for us with an iphone… thats one thing i really want to do…. plus watch videos that are on facebook.
Hey, has anyone else noticed Fbook demanding a stupid F*&!ing Kaptcha when you share a link?
It’s really annoying––just started today!
@Jason Look into it, would ya?
Because the only links that get shared are phishing sites?
With all these new features, I hope the app finally tells me that it’s somebody’s birthday! ;)
This app is a nice update but it’s missing key 3.0 features like Push Notifications and video uploads.
Joe Hewitt is a one-man wrecking crew! WOW!
he srsly is.
Please give me now.
I would sure like to see that App for WinMobile also.
Nice improvements on the usability front
This looks fantastic.. I hope Joe releases this soon..
There are some easy apps to do that but this article make me want to use my facebook everyday.. Awesome
Push is coming in 3.1, Joe said it couldn’t make it for 3.0. He also said video upload is coming for 3.0 too for 3gs users. I’m hoping he’ll open it up to all users so 2g/3g cycorder users can upload vids too.
Check his twitter page out and stop complaining about stuff that’s already in the pipeline lol.

I wonder when my iPhone app for http://www.appgiveaway.com is going to be available in the App Store? Why the unexpected delay???
Dear AppGiveaway,
Your application, App Giveaway, is requiring unexpected additional time for review. We apologize for the delay, and will update you with further status as soon as we are able.
Thank you for your patience.

Groups.
Whatever you do, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT remove the “Live Feed” stream from the Newsfeed. When they took it off the main website, I resorted to using it on m.facebook.com and on the iphone app. PLEASE…PLEASE Keep this feature and do not sync with the desktop website.
I must say the Facebook iPhone app looks pretty tidy :-)
pls give me now!!! I want to get it!
loving the look of this, lets get it on..now!!
Wow, can’t wait!
That all sounds great but one thing has been left unanswered… can you /poke from it? :-)
