A lot of us here at TechCrunch quite like Bing, Microsoft’s new search, sorry, discovery, no sorry, decision engine. For a number of queries it seems to provide better results than Google. But that doesn’t mean the public will start using it. And this video by College Humor I think lays out why.
“Bing helps you Google the best choice, faster. And shows related Googles right there on the results page. Bing knows what you like to Google.”
Gotta love the sub-caption too on the video page: “The easiest way to Google since Yahoo!”
[thanks Ian]

I really like Bing, and have made it my default search engine in Firefox. No company deserves a monopoly in any market. Not Google, nor Microsoft.
Agreed.
Bing touched Yahoo market share today:
http://tinyurl.com/r4xpwu
I am loving this competition. Google is next?
Bing is another step up the stairs of search engine evolution. Google might make something even more interesting.
As usual, Siegler, you are wrong. http://en.wikip...atural_monopoly
I agree about the monopoly, but the fact that it suggests, “Linux Windows” “Linux Microsoft” “Linux Vista” when searching linux really gets to me. How can i trust its results when it suggests its products when searching for a competitor?
Jim
I disagree with Bing being called ‘decision engine’. I notice Bing to be rather vague in its search results. If you search things related to my business (cell phone accessories), you cannot find the price of the item immediately.
For instance, try searching one of the hottest things in my segment – “iPhone Retractable Car Charger”. While Google lists the price which immediately gives you an idea of how much money is needed for buying the charger, Bing is pretty vague about the whole thing. You’ve to log in to find the price whereas Google makes it easy without the need to go into shopping segment.
I would say Google makes search easier. In Bing’s case, for the same keyword, you get only vague results.
I maybe quite wrong. But what do you guys have to say regarding this part, I mean, shopping through Bing?
I agree. The problem that I have is that I like Safari better but have no way of making it my default engine since Apple locks you into using Google.
I have the same problem with Safari so I just made it my new homepage I love the images they put up every day.

A quick ‘google’ of ‘change safari search engine’ reveals an application you can use to add bing.

I have to agree with you as well. It was the reason why whenever I had to do a reach search for research, i did it in Google and Yahoo. Now I have a third choice and quite frankly I have made it my home page on Firefox if anything, to see those WONDERFUL pictures (and no, it is not my deafult search engine… that is still Google)
Well since you said no company deserves a monopoly in any market, then what OS do you use Linux ? If not you are a microsoft employee and/or a fool trying to teach people things.
Google is the Coke and Kleenex of search.
Love it
To me it is the gmail which makes me stay google… plus google hasn’t given me a reason to leave.. sure I hate how my gmail username is linked to my youtube to my blogger.. makes me want to scream sometimes as I use seperate true URL email addies for youtube and it signs me out for gmail.. and sure I hate googles help in groups.. most useless help in the world.. but until microsoft learns to market to those flaws I don’t have an emotional reason to change.. and people only change when you can create emotion..
If I am them I really focus on how easy it is to save money… for me I assume that is a feature only for US.. not the world based on past experience. I get a email system like gmail, with a non-hotmail or live name..
FYI You can use Hotmail without having to have a @hotmail or @live email address. Not saying this constitutes “a email system like gmail” but it is “a non-hotmail or live name”
To me hotmail is what I started with.. it is old.. gmail.. I guess what I am trying to say is you can’t beat google on one front. If I was to create a search engine I would also have a premade firefox browser with that search engine as the default… I would also have an email platform, I would also have blog platform.. what I think ms needs to do is buy posterous.. I think they need to buy facebook, I think they need to buy twitter.. and then create a new email platform called gebadia@fb.com
Then they have a chance… stop spending a 100 million on ads and just give people more reasons to switch..
The video gave me bit of headache with all that Google Google Bing Bing Google Bing Google it. Tried Bing couple of times but I’m still mostly using Google.
havoc is now banned.
really?
JOKE!
Watching a clip about bingoogle gave you a headache because of too much bingoogle?
What did you expect? Porn? SEO BS?
A regular video.
From college humor? hahahahaha
At least that made you laugh.
…and google google google. awesome.
Indeed, 1st good bing ad
Wen I want to google something, I just go to Bing. (there is no way on Earth that I am ever going to say “just bing it” or “just bing me”)
@arrington for the win!
Only took MSFT 3 major tries and buying the fast search engine for $1 Billion to get it half right.
Stay with Google.
nah, the end quote did it for me.
“that’s G-O-O-G-L-E … it, with Bing” hehe
You guys are G-O-O-G-L-E Freaks!!
Google, Bing, and Yahoo all failed me equally. I could not locate the lyrics to a song. I did not know the song title or the artist, only some of the lyrics and that is was country. I was attempting to learn the song title, so I could purchase the song. It seems search engines still have a ways to go.
Now you’ve got me curious. What lyrics do you remember? What search terms did you use? As long as you have a couple of lines to work with, it should be possible to track it down.
Post the info here, maybe we’ll all have a go at it. I’ll be using Google for that, definitely.
Agreed, it’s you who failed but not SE
actually I had a similar issue a while back. Googling every verse of the lyric did not return anything related.
anyone care to give it a go? the title is called ‘Together hand in hand’ was a duet
still cant find out who sings it…
Funny video. I’m surprised Microsoft didn’t come up with anything like that, given their massive marketing campaign.
Personally, I still prefer Google as my default search, but for image searches, Bing is way more convenient to use than Google right now, even though it has less features.
That was hysterical. I can’t stop laughing. Thanks
I thought Twitter search is the discovery engine, and Bing is the first ever decision engine. I Google/Binged it, and am still not certain. Just thought I’d Ask.
Clever Ad directed to the mass unTechish I must say.
I love bing, it’s cool. Though I still uses google more but slowly and gradually i am moving towards Bing…
Since i’m using Chorome, i just use google–well since the search is ofcourse built into the address bar, n i don’t think that there’s any pulg ins for chomoe 2 use bing is there?….
In Chrome:
Hit the “Wrench” dropdown, Select Options
Under the “Basic Tab” there is a dropdown to change your default search.
I do PPC on Bing and use it regularly (with Chrome). Bonus tip: if you type “Google [query]“, without brackets, into the Chrome omnibox you can select which search engine to do that individual search.
Thanks so much! I know it’s totally stupid and it’s ofcourse it should be an obvious option, but I guess I wasn’t thinking! lol! Really tho, thankx for taking the time to reply!
google = browser = search engine = yahoo = bing
What the heo is the difference between these 5 terms? 90% of peepoe out their don’t know. Most peepoe use these terms interchangeably.
Hilarious! I wonder if the tables will ever be turned? i.e. Bing with Google.
Bing has become one of my most-visited sites in a day for searching. But for email, Gmail is best, hands down. Hotmail is no where near it.
was that a Google commercial or Bing on acid?
Bing definitely brings better results than google.
It’s a hilarious video, whether you’re techie or not. I was watching a bing commercial with my Girlfriend, and she just looked at me and said “wtf that was the worste commercial i’ve ever seen.”
The tv spots don’t make sense… at all. They have some good results, but google has better results on different things as well. And google maps > bing maps. Google video youtube > bing video? and I think google docs > bing docs? office? iunno.. Oh and gmail > hotmail or is it bing mail?
Anyway the rebranding = confusion, and all this hype will soon die as no one other than the 5 people at TechCrunch that are inflating the search stats will be using bing in the next 6 months.
Sorry but search still sucks regardless of which “engine” you use..
MG, I’ll suggest again you TELL everyone how to switch all their browsers, so they can do it if they want.
Also – anyway to make Bing default on iPhone? Or will the EU have to get involved for that to happen?
There you have it MG, honest to god reporting… no opinions, just getting the facts and reporting them to the benefit of your readers.
Also, I cannot decide if you are the Varejao or the Ilgauskas of TC.
Which one feels more like you?
I’d use Bing if IE8 worked better
Bing is better than Google.Bing gives better decision maker.
Great video! I’d also think it was sponsored by Microsoft
What this video does is:
1. Generates awareness of Bing
2. Shows main features of Bing which are superior to those of Google
3. States that Bing is a better way to search (no matter how you call it)
Still did not find any valid reason to even try Bing. Its a fad.. people will go bing then turn back for solid old search engine
You know one of the biggest reasons for Google’s monopoly was Firefox.
Tons of people downloaded Firefox with the Google toolbar already installed in it. That made Google their default search engine.
As of now, I don’t think Bing even has a toolbar. Toolbars are so important – I always search from my toolbar
It’s wise versa
So many Bing’ers here , may be this post is the first stop for all the hefty market campaigning msft is doing. Nevertheless I like Bing and it pleasantly surprised me. I like this new competition, will bring in real innovation in search. Google has been lazy recent years, could have done lot in search.
It would be interesting to see a review of the meta search engines. i.e http://www.dogpile.com.
There are others, but I have not seen one yet that searches bing.
What I like about dogpile is the results are very clean.
I found the video more annoying than anything else. Not really funny.
Check out http://www.binghomepages.com
It’s an archive of Bing Home Page images
I personally do not like Bing. It never gives me the results I’m looking for without rethinking my wording a number of times and even then, the results aren’t as good as the same search with google. I’d get rid of my bing/windows live search bar all together if it didn’t also have my hotmail auto sign-in attached.
One of the things Google will / needs to do is to buy Kayak (or implement its own – which is going to much harder). http://bit.ly/qmUnj
The primary reason I haven’t switched to bing is because I use gmail. Google happen to be right there so I use it for all my searches out of convenience.
When you get past all the google hype bing is just as equal to that hype there both good pointless trying to diferentiate after all thy are only browsers.
Using Search engine is not like getting married. It is OK to be faithful to many, and you are missing a lot when you are researching by sticking to one.
I use search engine many times in a day for both personal and business purposes. Microsoft Bing should be another good search engine in additional to engines. Which one would I use first depends on my mindset. Although, I like anything Microsoft. But in this case, I go by the result of my research on a particular issue.
I dont want any other option to search the web. Google and yahoo are enough. Why to add one more option to search…..
4 me google is the best:D
yeah me too. .google and yahoo is enough, but i really love google
I wanted to test this so entered search trend in google. Guess what came 1 ..Google
Now I searched bing trends. The answer was couple of blogs.
Now I went to bing and searched for search trend..guess what was the result ..Google
Bing can not tell about its own trend, how the hell can it beat google.
On search results it is somewhat comparable, I agree on that
I want bing to let me get cashback without turning off add block plus.
Otherwise I vow to never use it.
