Just like every other major Website, Google was inundated with people looking for news about Michael Jackson yesterday. Above is a chart showing the volume of search queries for the deceased pop star. Searches peaked right around 3 PM PDT, as people all over the world were trying to find out information about his passing.
More details on the Google blog.
Update:
Here’s a graph that was posted by the Facebook Data Team showing off the number of Michael Jackson-related status updates during the same time frame:

His death clearly collapsed the entire internet
what does vertical graph mean?? Can’t see metrics on that anywhere – maybe I’m blind.
MJ posts are more annoying than Twitter ones
Indeed. It even made Google admit the Jacko is a Zombie [Pic]

The Interwebs were indeed in need of a good reboot. Conspiracy theories are circulating now about Michael’s alleged faking of his death: http://bit.ly/eqqRG
they have his body… so this would be impossible unless authorities are in on it.
Talk about a come back tour!
Does he have a fresh liver we can give to Steve Jobs? Was MJ an organ donor? Can we clone MJ? Was MJ really an alien?
There’s lots of speculation about this, but the most recent theory I read was that he was getting jerked around by the concert promoters before his death. He didn’t want to do the tour. At least according to http://www.f2bbs.com
That’s the brilliance of it, over the years he slowly replaced his body with plastic surgery. Now he can leave a wax museum dummy in his place and no one will be the wiser!
They had a place for him on Elvis’ space ship, but Elvis still hasn’t forgiven him for that weird marriage to Lisa Marie. The space aliens were sad but you don’t argue with the King.
What’s interesting though is Google News blocking access because it thought the spike was due an automated attack. At the same time Twitter was limiting its functionality while fail whaling every now and then. The cloud is so not ready yet!

Please explain what is “the cloud”?
Is it a website?
A server?
A cluster of servers?
The internet?
A type of technology?
An idea?
I wish they would throw some numbers in there, Otherwise it just tells you peak time and the trend which are a big duh.
Is there a y axis to these graphs? Otherwise, these charts are a bit out of perspective.
Yahoo! on MJ:

Nah. Everyone was searching, “Who is this Michael Jackson I keep hearing about?”
No, I don’t think that is it. They don’t have internet access in caves.
what about searching for plastic surgury?
no need to be rude in your case stupid end ignorant ld montreal
The Facebook chart makes no sense to me… there were just as many Jackson-related status updates immediately before the news broke as there were 7 hours afterwards. Either Facebook users have a very short memory, or there were a strangely high number of Michael Jackson status updates he died.
This is because the FB graph is not described accurately here: the graph shows _all_ status updates on FB around the time of the event. That’s different from the Google graph.

I found out about it first through a push alert from the AP on my iPhone….my first Push notification ever on the iPhone…what a sad one.
the end of a era
I found out first about MJ’s death through Twitter. I’m sure people that know it on Twitter will straight away go to their favorite news sites or to Google to search
Well, did you know about this?

I was sorry to hear that Jesse’s son had passed.
Thanks so much for the stats + links. Graphs are impressive indeed for showing users trends.
When I faced slow loading over Twitter yesterday (2006-06-25), I was so curious to know usage stats for social media and search engines regardin this.
I found out about it on facebook first because of the status updates, and then i googled it.
@Pukeko. The reason for the decline in status updates is that people sent up a whole bunch of R.I.P. messages on Facebook, and really you only need to do it once. So 7 hours later, most of the people had already done that and there was no need to do it again. The news spread so fast that i’m sure almost everyone in the world had already heard it 7 hours later.
go Micheal. Micheal FOREVER!!

and on twitter… http://www.crow...amp;public=true
How about a graph showing the TC posts relating to Michael Jackson before and after his death?
i binged michael jackson
Wow. So if North Korea nuked Hawaii, Martians landed in Washington and “Big One” hit Los Angeles, we would have really witnessed a complete system meltdown?
so the internet searches peaks when some big event happens.
hmm who would have thought…
nice scoop
