NoPorn: Apple Removes “Hottest Girls” From The App Store
by Robin Wauters on June 25, 2009

The tech blogosphere was abuzz yesterday with the news that Apple seemingly started accepting applications that contain nudity into the App Store. Now, it appears someone over at Cupertino as ultimately decided to reject the first such app to get into the store after all. In our tests, we could still locate the app via the iTunes link, but were unable to purchase it and download it to our devices.

Other applications with the new rating (”Rated 17+ for “Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity.”) could still be downloaded without a problem, so it seems Apple just let ‘Hottest Girls’ slip through the cracks – something we suggested as a possibility yesterday as well – and has now fixed it by blocking it specifically.

So much for the grand opening of the App Store to all things naked (regardless, go have your say in MobileCrunch’s poll on the subject).

  • ARE YOU KIDDING?

c’mon apple, look at the Iran’s clampdown on the media/internet/cell.

a little nudity never killed anyone.

    • on the contrary, a little nudity has likely led to most every major war in the history of humankind. believe it!

    • It doesn’t kill people – just marriages, families and any form of self confidence.
Guys that are addicted to porn have huge self image issues. Why would Apple fuel that?

      • Are you kidding me? Porn is useful because it allows you to clear you head.. sometimes as a guy you just need to get rid of the friskiness. Truth is porn saves marriage… I could you stories of the times when some free streaming porn has stopped me from hooking up with… don’t tell me I have a self esteem issue cause too many times when I don’t use it as a useful clear the mind tool.. I end up spending time in a hotel with some guy like yours wife…

Furthermore many girls I know what porn… many couples..

Why is it up to apple to tell me what I want on my phone? And this idea of watching porn.. most people watch a few minutes to accomplish a task.. and the truth is often is just cheaper to please ourselves than… well you know..

        • ignorant. “Clear your head”??? You mean “fill your head”. No one needs the porn to get rid of the “friskiness”.

The only marriages it saves are the ones which are not based on commitment and devotion to the one you married. Open marriages are a farse and not a commitment. They’re merely a convenience.

“Why is it up to apple to tell me what I want on my phone?” Put whatever you want on your phone. You can put videos and audio to your hearts content….but, don’t act as though they shouldn’t have a standard to go by….or that they are censoring (which you’re alluding to) it. The app store belongs to THEM – not you or us. They decide.

You’re fooling yourself and seem to have a need to rationalize your behavior. Don’t tell people it’s normal and fine just to convince yourself.

          Try

          • lol… give it a rest. 50% of marriages in North America fail so don’t get on here and pretend you have a clue. Nobody does. Porn is useful in that it gives me something to watch so I can tame the beast.. it is like today I am on my lunch break and my friend says to me she wants me… but I can’t.. she is 30 minutes away which is my lunch break.. having something on my iphone would be useful to clear my head in the washroom… see now the problem is I am frisky.. and it means the older MILF in the office looks good..

And I am not trying to rationalize my behavior.. I watch porn for about 2 minutes at a time every night to tame the beast.. statistically speaking so do a lot of people like yourself.. the difference is I don’t lie about it.. and the numbers.. not your opinion.. the number of views, the fact that lots of guys like you saw transformers for megan fox do show that it is normal to love the female body… wake up

        • Just kinda guessing Gebadia Smith has a very unattractive spouse/partner.

          Re-kindle that fire buddy!!

          • Aren’t we just high and mighty today.

          • See I am not the guy who got married and had kids.. I am that single guy that traveled the world and had wild crazy moments.. from the British MILF in a Jamaican hotel.. to this latin bunny in Costa Rica.. to cajun sweetness in New Orleans.. the flight attendant.. the chinese lesbian…

See I have done all those things.. I have been on a pool table in a hostel with some french hottie and the thing that stays with you is the 6 months you have to wait for an HIV test.. and so the 2 minutes of porn.. it helps keep me from being bad.. so I don’t see anything wrong with it.. I am just tired of waking up next to some stranger.. too real for you I imagine..

    • Wonder what other apps are slipping through Apple’s approval process … ?

  • I bet you a hundred bucks a few parents complained that their child could download porn and that is horrible of Apple to do.

Hey parents just a quick tip… your kids have something called safari on their iPhones.

    • Yeah, but they won’t have Flash so they can’t get to the “good” stuff :P

      • Not that I advocate porn, but xtube.com has a special iphone section, no flash needed – all video content available. There are 100s more that are non-flash.

      • Where di you get that idea?

I just looked at Pornhub’s mobile section and they have an option to download any video to your phone instead of streaming it, and also if you try to stream it, it opens in a mesia player so your phone can stream it anyway.

  • This will never happen on the android market place… lol

Sux to be you iPhone users… sorry ;)

    • Agreed. This is why I have always disliked Apple (walled garden). It goes against the progressive open/social thinking. I think apple has the best design and are leading this industry, but they better be careful. They also lead computer sales at one point…iPod and then the iPhone saved their butts. They better be more open like Android, because their new foe isn’t Microsoft, but Google in this field which is more progressive and not so sluggish.

As for Porn, I don’t care, it was the old school NES karate game they banned a few days ago. WTFudge? Remember the soup Nazi on Seinfeld? In walks the ‘App Nazi’ /points to Apple

      Lame.

      /deep sigh

Go Android and other open platform applications!!!!

  • What happened? Steve Jobs changed his mind after approving this yesterday or someone else approved it and Steve said NO today?

  • This was just porn for nuns anyway.

  • Honestly, this would get out of hand. The store would be overrun with a flurry of “nudie apps” that would tackle the top charts and become unavoidable. Not very fair to everyone else who might not, get ready for it, want to be bombarded with tits that are not that of their lovers! Yeah. Crazy stuffy, huh?

    • Yes lets let fear rule the day and ignore common sense.. because video stores never had an R-rated section.. it isn’t hard to say.. this is for adults.. this is R-rated and if you are worried about children… I guess they can’t google.. seriously it is just porn..

do you know how often we are exposed to sexual images.. how often girls i the summer wear revealing clothes.. driving is dangerous in the summer because as a guy you look left and right and then smack…

Porn is what allows us to focus and work.. and be productive cause when the guy downstairs gets excited.. the mind starts to wonder and sometimes you need to feed the beast..

      • “Porn is what allows us to focus and work”

Alcoholics say the same thing about Alcohol.

Drug addicts say the same thing about Drugs.

        Get my point?

        • Seriously nobody has a sense of humor in TC.. can you not see I am being silly.. that sure there is truth but there is exaggeration.. Bill have a drink, smoke a duby.. and enjoy some porn.. lol… might loosen you up..

  • Hm

I was remember article here about Shake Baby App is this was removed from App store or it still there?

  • I’m sorry, but can’t you just use the built-in Safari browser to get all the “porn” you want?

  • Apple fans have always been idiots. This just proves it’s true.

  • As a parent whose child has an iPod Touch, I am happy that they removed it.

As a technologist and a business guy, I am saddened at the fact that this was done. If the reason was truly that parents or parent groups were complaining then we are in bad shape. We release our responsibility as parents to control what our children do and watch and blame someone else when our children do things that we the parents should have not let them done in the first place.

I can understand Apple’s choice since it is a store and can determine what to sell at the store, but I also think that, unlike brick and mortar stores, they have the technology and capability to control it better. A better solution would have been to automatically enable parental controls when applications such as this one (based on ratings) are purchased. Another solution would be to allow parents to block these purchases until parental controls are applied to their account or phone. The solutions are there.

    • I agree with your technologist side.

To your parent side, I’d don’t let your kid use your credit card without your consent. That’s a pretty fail-safe parental control, until Apple gets proper parental controls in place (if they haven’t already).

However, I really must say that I don’t understand why anyone would purchase this app. There’s tons of free porn on the web, and seriously, who needs to have mobile access to porn anyway? What people do in the comfort of their own home is their own business, and I’m fine with it. But a mobile app? For those times when the check-out at the grocery store is moving too slow? For when you’re stuck in traffic? Johnny’s soccer team is down by 3, and the second half is just starting? Are you just determined to be creepier than the drunk guy on the subway?

    • Umm why have parental controls (e.g. a section that blocks sexual topics and nudity, if you don’t have any apps that need to be blocked? I think this reversal is just temporary, and “porn soft or otherwise” apps are still going to come one day.

      • The parental controls are not just designed for porn. They are also designed for violent games and adult content that is not porn based.

That said, the parental controls that apple placed in the iPhone are very short on features with the biggest missing feature being the parental controls on Safari. They just don’t exist. You can either disable Safari or not. That is very bad for parents because the Web is a hell of a lot more dangerous than the App Store and that is something that they should have thought about before.

As far as the reversal being temporary, I doubt it. I don’t think that Apple wants to take a device that is marketed to the entire family (including kids being very big consumers of the Touch) and start making it more adult oriented. It is the same reason why iTunes does not sell or rent porn (when they can make a lot of money doing so).

  • The App was not even good. But in all seriousness, I don’t need to be protected by Apple.

  • Not to mention this app does violate privacy laws. Those can get very serious when showing anything sexual that can defame a girl. She could be allowing it in one context, such as a magazine, but when you’re monetizing off it in an iphone app and making ~2k a day things could get real serious. “My friend” told me the girls in the screenshots are famous porn stars who most likely did not allow consent for their picture to be used in such a manner. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a lawsuit to take away the developers profits on top of the rejection of the app on the store.

  • I have no problem with porn but I just don’t think it fits in the app store. I’m all freedom of this and that, yadda yadda, but I jsut think it tarnishes the image. If you’re that desperate for porn on the go, you have problems.

  • BIG BROTHER APPLE IS WATCHING YOU

  • There is no end to the porn business. One app today, 1000 by the weekend, 100,000 by the end of the month. Then competitors call the iPhone the porn sewer in ads to kill iPhone sales. Enterprise is no longer interested.

  • Developer of the app says he pulled it temporarily.

“The Hottest Girls app is sold out. Our servers are reaching their limits, and we’ve decided to stop distributing the app while the usage levels are still high. We know that this is costing us thousands of dollars by not selling it while it is popular. But it would be unfair to the buyers if our server were to crash. We will start selling the app again soon. The topless pictures will not be removed when we start selling the app again. Those who already have the app will continue to be able to view the nude images. -ATG dev team”

    • I purchased the app. It wasn’t all that brilliant, other than its novelty really.

The interesting part is that now, when I start it up, I get the following message on the screen

“This version will no longer work.
      You should delete this version.”

It’s not like I can get a new version, so this is now starting to look like a case of a credit card chargeback. i.e.: I purchased an application for my iPhone in good faith, and with the expectation that it would work for more than one day :-)

Yeah, it’s only a couple of dollars, but it does open up an interesting case where either Apple or the application developer not only pulls an application from the store, but also disables that application as well.

      • It gets more interesting – today I was invoiced for this particular product. I went to apple’s “report a problem” and outlined the issue – that is, I have been sold a product which doesn’t work.

Once submitted, Apple tells me that it’s not their problem and provides me a link to the authors page with a mailto: link.

Sent him an email – I want my money back now!

        :-)

  • This isn’t porn folks. Unless it had pictures of sexual acts it’s just glamour/pin up photography.

  • I am adult content producer and i knew a lot of those pics – it was just a random picture collection that someone took from the internet. it’s very possible that it wasn’t the tits but copyright violation why it was taken down.

  • so what does get classified with the 17+ rating? why is it there at all?

  • AppleInsider said the dev removed it due to the image server not being able to handle the traffic.

  • according to the developer:

    http://www.allenthegeek.com/

the app’s servers are closed for now. they’re SOLD OUT, of the app because they don’t want to crash the service for the users who’ve already bought it.

just hold your pretty little horses, kids, and you can get all the nudie apps you want.

meanwhile cooliris is an image app that can get you whatever you want pix of from google images. so there’s that if you must.

  • You simply don’t get it.
Apple doesn’t care about what you download.
They do, however, care about the image of their precious App Store.

Anyone with common sense understands that porn applications will be in the top popular items lists of any given category.

Apple is simply embarrassed by the fact that the majority of their sales will be associated with porn.

  • If you want porn on your iphone just surf to
    http://onetapporn.com iphone porn webapp :)

  • As a parent, I can honestly say I don’t care what my kids look at. I would mind if they decided to go off and meet strangers — but as I keep warning them, “He might say he’s 16 and look like a Jonas Brother, but he’s a 50-year-old fat bald guy who lives in his parents’ basement.”

Also, they’d have to ask me to give them a ride there, so I’m feeling pretty safe.

As far as looking at dirty pictures — its a basic primate instinct. Women’s magazines are filled with soft-core photos of mostly naked women. (Thus providing additional evidence that yes, most women are bi, and yes, they like looking at naked girls as much as men.)

When I was a kid, I remember dirty pictures being passed around by other kids.

In experiments, monkeys would give up their treats in order to look at monkey porn: http://www.msnb...com/id/6892037/

Hmm… new diet possibility? Don’t go to the fridge… turn on Skinemax.

And the reason the iPhone is convenient folks, is that you can have it with you under the covers — it glows in the dark, unlike traditional print magazines — and is more convenient than a computer monitor.

And, frankly, I’d rather my teenagers explored their sexuality by looking at pinup photos on their cell phones than by actually going out there and doing live experiments.

But at the end of the day, I have no illusions. There’s not much that any parent can do in the face of the teenage sex drive. The only thing we can do is teach our kids to lie to us more convincingly — and get more creative in getting around the weak-as-cottage-cheese blocks we try to put around “adult” content.

  • thank god i download it today LOL… on top of that killswitch is OFF !

  • I think it’s foul play having allowed this app and removing it after.
    Bad Apple

  • I have to agree with Apple about taking “Hottest Girls” off the app store. All of you who think it should stay up are sick. I mean, I get that kids have the ability to do whatever the hell they want with their computers , but do we HAVE to encourage it? We don’t have to become completely Nazi and monitor whatever they do, but that doesn’t mean that we can go blindly doing whatever we want and not care about what the kids are doing. There is Google Chrome with their incognito browser, it records NO history, so kids go wherever. I wouldn’t call myself an uptight person, but can we please keep the kids away from porn?
