With all the chatter about Yahoo’s impending roll-out of a completely overhauled brand – see Techmeme for more – this particular tip that landed in our inbox last night definitely caught our attention.
TechCrunch reader Bradley Scott Shoemaker checks in with us to tell us this new Yahoo homepage turned up when visiting the portal using Google’s Chrome browser. All his other installed browsers still showed the classic Yahoo website, which lead him to believe they’re gradually bucket testing the new redesign for now (update: some users reported seeing it for over a month already).
We think so too: the screenshot shows that this design is very close to the redesign we reported on back in September 2008 (embedded below again). They only tested that one for a select few users in a limited amount of countries too, but it was the last we’d actually heard of it.
Update 2: The Business Insider posted a screenshot of a new redesign back in May too, but there are some differences, particularly on the color and navigation level.
For the record: comScore pegs Yahoo’s total traffic at over 550 million unique visitors worldwide (May 2009), of which 150 million located in the U.S. alone.
So, who else has spotted this revamped Yahoo website? Let us know in comments.

They should redesign 2night.com as well.
People don’t understand web2.0 is over. Real-time!
I had this page pop up two weeks I ago, I kept killing the cookies that were making show. I am not a fan of the new page, new stories are to far down the page – like below the fold.
Yahoo’s homepage should be more real-time and social like their TweetNews Yahoo! BOSS service:
http://tweetnews.me
Much better content aggregation I think
The new look is good but I think it should load faster than the previous one.

Yahoo just don’t get it.
Well said
I have the new design now too. My mom had it on her laptop almost 6 months ago. I have no idea how she got it so early. Seems like they’ve been rolling it out for a while. Maybe they started with people who would have no idea what’s going on (like my mom).
It’s clean, but it really lacks in any form of identity. My question…Yahoo, what do you want to be? Bold and progressive, or sedate and boring like everyone else? Its the same old thing with a different look and feel.
*yawn*
My bad … was this supposed to actually be news? I have been “experiencing” the above version for at least a month now.
Next.
Really? First time I saw this one, although granted I don’t visit the website all that often anyway.
Yes, i’ve been seeing this by default (at work) for quite a long time too.
When i go to Yahoo.com at home though the old version still shows.
I guess that Yahoo test new designs on specific IP ranges…
I’ve spotted the same change on Yahoo homepage too, i’m using Firefox 3, get online just to read Yahoo’s today top searches. I think it was only a mere coincidence, I was totally in shock when the page reviewed here.
I prefer this new design… sleek.
Yawn. I’ve had that new home page for like 2 weeks.
So…where’s the morning Twitter story?
Updated the story to reflect that the testing didn’t start today, wonder if and when they’ll do a full roll-out.
PS: we’re keeping a close eye on Twitter’s uptime, if it goes down for a second we’ll make sure to report on it!
When are Yahoo going to give up? They need to do a lot more than simply overhauling the brand…they need to ask the question ‘Why would people want to use Yahoo?’ and go from there.
Actually, it seems to me that Yahoo! is cashing in on the questions “Why do people already use Yahoo?”
I love Yahoo! mostly because of the fact that when I go to Yahoo, I’m updated on news stories before searching, but also because I tend to get better results on the first SERP (everyone who’s spammed their site to get good Google rankings usually appear lower in a Yahoo! search).
Yahoo! is taking the exact opposite approach as Google. With Google, the homepage is basic, and it got popular because it was basic. At Yahoo!, the homepage is a portal to a lot of different things. My guess is that if you asked a lot of people why they prefer Yahoo! over Google, they will say it’s because they have more going on, and are an easy way to start clicking around and surfing the web rather than just doing a focused search (but a focused search still works well).
ding ding ding
We have a winner.
Wow, an intelligent reply on Techcrunch. Clearly you’re lost.
Intelligent. :blushes: well, I’m sure some people appreciate it. I have TC loaded in a tab all day at work, anyway, so I just as well contribute when I can.
Instead of redesigning the homepage, they should redesign their management.
lol no kidding, HIYO!!! http://www.yout...h?v=Ji-cT58rgNc
Old news. ReadWriteWeb (http://www.read...usive_new_y.php) had this over a month ago.
Did someone forget to do their research?
That article is from 2006, smartass.
My apologies. Is this one better? http://www.busi...homepage-2009-5
Not the same design, but more similar at least. Post updated.
Snore! Needs a much stronger direction than that to keep up.
See Yahoo could offer me money… pretty girls and I still wouldn’t bother to switch… It is hard to care about a company that has my grandma running it and has closed down so many different parts…
I think anyone can get the new page with http://m.www.yahoo.com/
I see the current one following that link.
They just keep whittling away parts so changing the look is not really the way to get people back.
Kinda used to it though…I v been using the redesigned site for weeks now using Firefox.
I’ve had the new Yahoo homepage for at least a month. It popped up one day, I haven’t deleted cookies etc. in my Firefox browser and the new one is on there every day. I can’t say that I use it any more than I did, but it does look nicer and less cluttered.
I think the todays total redesign of Truveo.com would make a better story than the Yahoo redesign from 3 months ago.
har, har…
funny, I’ve had that new home page from home for about a month but on FF, not on safari or chrome.
Definitely better design but still lame…
10 Things I noticed about the New Yahoo Homepage
Here are 10 things that have been changed. Probably more.
1.My login name is no longer my Yahoo name (Welcome, Ivan)
2.My login name is now my ‘My Blog Log’ name.
3.My Blog Log is discretely referenced in the top menu bar – far right.
4.Yahoo Mail is not displayed in the right hand pane.
5.Widgets are added to the left menu. You can edit the left menu and add new widgets if you wish.
6.Get the New Yahoo Toolbar is gone.
7.Suggest a Site is now called Submit Your Site
8.The Page Layout option is gone
9.Yahoo! Espanol is now at the footer of the page.
10.Y! International is changed to International
I added this to my site yesterday.

Left side nav is clunky and actually complicated for grandpa to configure. The design of the rest of the page is cleaned up and streamlined.
I’ve had this design show up a couple of months ago, but does not anymore. Maybe because I’m at work or because I now use Chrome.
IMO, I don’t like it as my landing page to find out what’s fresh on the web.
I’d like to see an exploded view of the home page where the content is not hidden behind tabs and layers of navigation.
I was not able to see this redesigned Yahoo page. I can only see the classic Yahoo here on my browser.
It’s a nice redesign, but it’s no game changer.
I first saw this about a month ago, I love the new redesign, very slick. I tend to find myself using Yahoo! more and more frequently everyday.
I know right! Its looks .. cool!
That page was showing up on my firefox for about 3 weeks and it just changed back to the classic page. To be honest, I’m not a fan of the redesign.
They might not have been number one in buzz for years, but they still have huge traffic.
yea, I saw this design and the other one too. Both look really nice to me, but I wonder when they’ll stop playing peek-a-boo with users and just shift to either of these new designs!
I saw both of these about a month or so ago. Yahoo is my homepage, so I’m used to it as it is, but I loved the layout and navigation of the 2nd redesign you have posted above. I’m waiting patiently for it!
I spotted a revamped y mobile site but only once about ten days ago. Sadly could not take a shot
Spotted this new design back in late April and blogged my thoughts (including a few more screenshots)
http://www.meyd...ls-we-are-back/
I am not a power Y! user, and I have been on the new home page for over a month now.
Me = Confused. Which image is new design… top or bottom. Both different than live. Both spotted?
Top one is the latest being bucket tested. Bottom is an older one that was being bucket tested.
I’m looking at the new design right now. I Always used MyYahoo and designed my page myself, maybe I had the new design a month ago too. Anyways I’m thinking shortly everyone will see it.
I totally love the new version of Yahoo…in fact I have had it running on my work computer for about a week or two and am now totally disappointed that it is gone! I want the new Yahoo back please!
This morning I got in and my manually added side bars for Twitter and Facebook…actually had the Twitter and Facebook logos! Woo-hoo! Then I close my browser and go back in an hour later…and it’s gone! It’s back to the old yahoo! Im so sad.
In case you missed the new design, just go to this http://m.www.yahoo.com/
real time sucks balls
like yahoo
Simply amazing……. Go Yahooooooooo
techcrunch made this exact article a few months ago
amazing how you recycle stuff
of course theres differences, yahoo is bucket testing 144 different versions of the homepage
I’ve been seeing this new design pop up occassionally for at least 4-5 months now. I thought this was really old news.
Yahoo’s redesigned their page eh?
I’ll have to Google that.
Reminds me of AOL.
Old news! I’ve been seeing the new homepage pop up on my computer for months now.

Come on Yahoo! Quit rearranging deck chairs. Page layout isn’t your problem. You need to pour 95% of your resources into just 2 things.
Search
Yahoo Publisher Network
This is where the game is won and lost. If Yahoo gets sidetracked with vanities like this again, they’ve got nowhere to go but down. Quit polishing the rims and get the damn engine running!
i saw the second screen shot back into March on my firefox. I asked my colleagues if they saw the same one but they did not. i felt quite i was quite lucky at that time.
I found this tonight…
