You might not think that we here at TechCrunch have a lot in common with the band Blink 182. But actually, we do. We both now have our own branded TweetDeck applications. You can find ours here.
TechCrunch TweetDeck users will get all the features of the normal version of TweetDeck (Twitter, Facebook, 12seconds, etc, integration), with the added bonus of the TechCrunch Column, as an option. This column features tweets from TechCrunch’s writing staff. It’s seriously riveting stuff. Why just last night, our own Robin Wauters tweeted out, “Cleaning up disks, creating backups etc. Necessary evil.”
Seriously though, we do occasionally share interesting stuff. And if news is breaking, there’s a good chance you’ll get it from one of us first. And you’ll be getting a version of TweetDeck with the handsome TechCrunch logo all over it. What’s not to love? Get it now.
TweetDeck is available for Mac, Windows and Linux, it just requires Adobe AIR. The company, which secured angel funding in January, has been working on getting more services integrated into its client. Last week, it launched an iPhone app that has been gaining popularity quickly.

and the circlejerk of useless redundant twitter “apps” (5 lines of code) continues
This is like the “Eddie Bauer” edition of Twitter clients.
Exactly.
Downloading NOW! {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/htiN4ayini_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”Downloading NOW! ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/Au2o0TWXox”}}}
Just curious–as there are tens of millions of us who hate one as much as the other.
I am almost positive that the “Eddie Bauer” comment was not a complement (or a diss either… just a fact lol). If I remember those “Eddie Bauer” Ford Expeditions correctly, they were not much different than the regular Ford Expedition.
And didn’t Eddie Bauer file for chapter 11?
Come on, how could you forget the Eddie Bauer pinstripe? That alone made it worth the $2K upgrade. Stickers are expensive!
So are apps like this going to be patched/updated as per the regular versions? I’d rather be able to just subscribe to columns from various sources – TechCrunch would be one – but I’d love to see my friend @nthmost’s column of SCIENCE! she’s carefully assembled. I’m pulling together a column of SF Foodies etc.

Yep, should be updated with the regular beta releases.
Maybe I am missing something… But doesn’t the term Beta release (singular) mean that it is the second release? Isn’t the normal process as follows: a first release, alpha, a second release, beta, then a full release. How could you have multiple beta releases (plural)?
Please correct if I am wrong….
this is just a branded edition of the same beta
Tweetdeck seems to the return of PointCast (but in a good way). Not sure if people remember PointCast from Web 1.0
Wish there was something actually useful in this version, not just “yet another branded tweetdeck” .. useless.
A better idea might be for tweetdeck to create some type of plugin or API that would allow companies, such as yourself, to provide a “drop in” (if you will) for users to install, which would allow them to see all of your companies tweets or news articles, or both.
Sounds like little more than custom skins… That would likely bring up interest levels.
Yeah this is a great idea
I agree. A follow TechCrunch tweets is fine but considering that you could do that yourself, I am not sure what is special about it (although I will admit a special column dedicated to TechCrunch with a click of the button is pretty interesting).
I think companies should think more about their interface design. I have been a desktop customization fan boy for almost 9 years and it always saddens me to see “skins” like this.
Ex: http://www.wincustomize.com
Ex 2 The Skins Factory
Way more examples of places to see real customization. Those 2 are off the top of my head.
I’m failing to see the benefit of using this version of the TweetDeck. At least they are trying to find new ways to “innovate”.
Problems with Adobe AIR applications, they are memory hogs. If you add the Yammer client, you’ll grind without a lot of memory.
Agreed. No matter what app I use, anything on AIR seems to use 60MB minimum.
4GB looks considerably less when you have firefox and a few AIR apps open.
that is utter nonsense. stop spreading BS like this.
I don’t want come off as a jerk, but Michael Arrington has equity in Seesmic and (presumably still) majority equity in TechCrunch.
me = confused
(disclosure: I have interest in Seesmic too)
So yeah – basically a custom column. Would get way more traction as an add-on, as opposed to seperate download. There should be a directory of add-on columns, and they should be shareable.
I don’t understand why Tweetdeck, Seemic and especially Tweetie don’t see the clear opportunities to jump ahead.
Tweetie – take the few hours of coding to add groups/lists. You then clearly win in the Mac space. I’m guessing you’re busy looking for funding and that’s why you’re not enhancing the product (or fixing the search issue for the iPhone app).
Seesmic – let me delete messages, inbox style. Also, let me drag messages into a follow-up folder. Now you win in the PC/Air space.
Tweetdeck – get over your black fetish, or make it easier to update colors without # color codes (at least give a few nicer looking defaults). Use tabs instead of columns to make better use of space (a la Tweetie). Now you’re caught up with Seesmic feature wise.
Just one of you please round-out your product so I can rely on only one client. Tweetie on iPhone is awesome, but your search doesn’t work so I have to use Tweetdeck also. Seesmic has my groups covered, but doesn’t add enough value otherwise to replace Tweetie/Tweetdeck.
Finally – Tweetie, please get your head out of the sand and let us know what you’re working on (and that you are in fact working on something!). Groups are a no-brainer!
Of course I can’t do any better myself, so grain of salt to all. Cheers!
I totally agree with your idea of a plugin but hate it when you say you don’t like tweetedeck’s columns and recommending tabs. Columns is *the* feature that got tweetdeck above twhirl. I would like to see all my updates side by side at a time instead of in tabs.. columns saqve you time in switching the tabs *think of usability*
Seesmic : side by side columns, plus a HOME column with multiple accounts flowing in just one column. You can see each account side by side as well. Much more usable w/ less screen space. I think its what you are looking for.
Love all your Tweetie hate when you clearly haven’t bothered to seek out the information. ‘No groups’ reasoning has been explained time after time, ’search’ issue was fixed and submitted (Not yet approved), and although it’s not as transparent as you’d like, it’s already been stated that Tweetie for iPhone is being retooled to better compliment it’s Mac version.
Also, realize that not all clients need to support the same feature set, especially features not supported or half-assed in the Twitter API.
No kidding, there’s so much room for improvement, and TweetDeck chose this?
Seesmic seems to be doing some things right. I hope they introduce some cant-live-without features.
Yo dawg – we heard you like TechCrunch, so we put TechCrunch in your Twitter so you could Techcrunch while you Tweet.
Hahaha… was just about to post that exact same thing dawg!
I love that you have the Xzibit username as well..
twhril > tweetdeck
Whats the point? Branding applications is soooo Web 1.0 where is the added value?
That’s such a Samantha thing to say.
+1
Is there another way to get a list of all the TechCrunch writing staff’s twitter accounts? I’d prefer to create my own column that does the same thing.
Nothing against TC, it’s just that I have similar columns for other blogs I read regularly and I want them all to match.

There are the ones I can think of off the top of my head – should get you started.
what’s wrong with following @techcrunch?
That has all the stories posted on the site.
It doesn’t provide any insights on where and what we have for breakfast.
lol. funniest comment here.
Ditto on the custom column. Since I can’t get on Google Reader, I’d rather just follow Techcrunch in its own dedicated column in Tweetdeck. But it isn’t worth it for me to uninstall my current installation and reinstall this…
It is a good website. But the speed is slow to visit from Asia. Maybe it is good fast in US.
i want a pink one with a big fat hello kitty face in the background. what’s up Tweetdeck?
you and your infatuation with the color pink. lol.
What does it cost TC to brand the app? Is it for Tweedeck to monitize?
I’m confused. TweetDeck seems to have an actual revenue stream here. Shouldn’t this automatically disqualify them from anything related to Twitter? I kid.
seesmic is much better… i tried to switch “back” to tweetdeck… ughh!!!!!
Oh boy…
Hey did you just make fun of my tweet? Backups ARE important, you know!
Great app, nice interface!
BTW, will it support Chinese in the next update?
So these guys now get extra “press”? (And what’s up with hosting Scoble’s launch?) Loic’s probably kicking himself that he didn’t think of this first.
I want a TweetDeck variant with that popular cat, I feel I could learn something from those tweets!
Or….. you could just create your own column in Tweetdeck, name it TechCrunch and just add that as the only person in your “group” instead of downloading silly branded clients.
This is just plain silly. This is the point where Twitter clients really jump the shark, and it’s painful to watch…
Love TweetDeck and LOVE TechCrunch so thanks for this guys.

Is this a joke? Mashable just debuted their version today as well: http://mashable...06/25/mashdeck/
I don’t see the point. Instead of developers forking Tweetdeck into their own versions, why don’t they collaborate and just make the original better?
Just downloaded it – I like the concept, but I’m not into the huge Tech Crunch branding in the background. There’s enough text on that page to begin with.
Loic could get inspired and launch a Seesmic skin, that would be something.
