The thing that saved television watching for me was the advent of the digital video recorder (DVR). I love the idea that you can be watching something, but have to stop to do something else, so you just pause it, and it will record it so you can come back later and pick up where you left off. Now you can have the same functionality on the live-streaming video site, Justin.tv.
While most live-streaming services offer archives of live recorded video, the nice feature here is the simple way to pick up just where you left off watching something. The feature, rolling out this afternoon, will offer a bar under each video that will read, “Continue watching this later.” If you click on it, all that live video will be recorded so that you can come back to it at a time of your choosing. You’ll receive a link to a place to come back and watch it with a message that looks like:
Use the link below to continue watching this broadcast when you have time, starting from what you’re watching right now (to within a few minutes).
This link will continue to work for 7 days.
You could also use this link to share with friends if you all wanted to pick up watching something together. Unfortunately, unlike TV DVR, there is no way to fast-forward through parts that you may want to skip. But I’m told that such functionality is likely in the works for a later release.

This is a really cool feature – great work JTV!
huh? ** yawn **
Nobody uses JTV though. Everyone is leaving the smaller live video sites to go broadcast at Ustream.
Brandon Turner… hmm – sounds like a ustream employee to me… is is easy to see that Justin.tv is bigger ustream – Techcrunch wrote about it 1 year ago. Justin.tv beats ustream is old news!
Ustream.tv Just Got a Redesign, But Justin.tv Is Still Beating Its Pants Off

You are right. It is old news..
Ustream is leading clearly

The real numbers are here:

Also notice that ustream recently switched off access to their detailed quantcast metrics – my guess is they didn’t like being continually compared to justin.tv and losing

I don’t understand why there is so much venom from Ustream users/employees when something gets written about JTV.
Press coverage helps, but user experience is what maintains usage. This is a flat out cool feature addition.
Looks cool.
BTW, My gmail account got hacked, and by the ‘Activity Log’ feature of Google, I could figure out the IP address from where my email account was logged in.
The IP was 204.15.23.171
I do not know how to figure out which browser is this. Is there any software that can figure out whose machine is this where my account was opened and emails were tampered?
Go to gmail > tools > history
Then look under “nobody gives a shit”
Sweet! This is awesome. JTV continues to make live video awesome – way to go guys!
Wow!
Revolutionary.
oh yea, Totally changing the internet! LMAOOOOOO
Who will we record… joe shmoe sitting in front of his computer?
Actually, this is pretty awesome since I have, on more than one occasion, wanted to watch Justopia on jtv but had to run out the door.
Very nice
I don’t see the point.
The point is that they allow you to time-shift live video. Just like your DVR on your tv – if you want to watch something later or share a live video with your friends it is now super easy!
That’s called VOD. Every site already has it. Look it up
did you bother to read the article? how could you NOT see the point?
Must be a slow news day MG
Justin tv sucks. Anyone who’s ever tried to watch the World Cup Qualifiers knows how they caved in to pay per view producers and pulled all the video streams, as if watching choppy video on a small window was illegal.
At least we have a much better alternative: ustream.tv
That has been a basic function of Flash Media Server for like 6 months.
Nothing revolutionary there.
Oh… and it isn’t taking off.
Why is it so important to rewind to a girl eating potato chips on JTV?
Finally! What a great idea.
Also in the Top 50 startups of 2009…

Isn’t Justin.tv the one where people are committing suicide and underage girls touch themselves?
Not sure how recording that will help them…
I guess this makes sense for them since all their streams are illegal sports and TV shows
lawsuit in 3…2…1…
How is that really DVR?
I’ve been using Justin.Tv for over a year now and they are always finding new ways to wow me. The site keeps on getting new and original features. Kudos to the staff at Justin.Tv!!!
This is a huge leap forward for online video. Revolutionary!
@MG
They didn’t gain DVR functionality, they gained a pause button.
I have to hand it off to Justin.tv for this, but I am still a uStream.tv user for life.
This isn’t new at all – Move Networks has done this for *years* (check out any of their Live customers).
Also check ESPN360.com
Wow, shocking lack of diligence here.
Straight from Adobe’s website:

“DVR functionality
Create high definition DVR functionality with new support for H.264 stream recording. Pause a live stream, or seek backwards into the video that was missed.”
Greg – that is new as of FMS 3.5; Move Networks has done this since 2006. Thanks.
MG..What the Heck is the message with the “Screenshot”??? Dead Pirate Studios!!! Then the Justin.Tv Office Cam Pic..WTF?????? I know how to add 1+1= WTF Are You Trying to Say???
HENDRICKSON!!!!!!… HENDRICKSON!!!!!
MG is RIGHT! justin is DEADPOOL!!! MG is a visionary. justin is FAIL!!!
those guys don’t pay back loans…
Definitely a valuable feature for Justin.tv, great to see it’s there.
MG is hurting for real news….DVR is old news…..DVR on crappy content is essentially crappy content
Yeah, this is great so I can watch ARAB SOCCER whenever I want.
LOLOLOL
I’ve broadcast as the ‘World’s Oldest Lifecaster’ on justin.tv/kq4ym daily for over 18 months and the idea of saving the live video to play back later is a refinement of jtv’s original idea of permanent archives of each channel.
As storage costs were eating them alive, they discontinued the unlimited archive storage and now limit it to 7 days. So now the ‘DTV’ feature will allow anyone to come back later to see something they found interesting while watching live. A kind of ’save this clip’ for me to see later. We’ll have to see if people make use of the feature. Not many made use of the permanent archive feature before it was discontinued.
Like putting a hat on a piece of crap.
justin.tv = myspace
ustream = facebook
nuff said!
