Google is about to launch a new Google Labs project it calls Flipper, we’ve learned. No, it’s not a dolphin. As you can see in the screenshot, it looks like the project is a more visual way to read Google News, or to “flip through it,” as it were.
While we have yet to use it, what looks nice about it is that you can not only browse by sections, but also by sources, keywords, and most importantly by elements such as “most popular” and “recommended.” The visual representation probably won’t revolutionize Google News’ often sub-par performance, but the better filters could.
The URL currently takes you to a Google log-in page, but when you sign-in you’re greeted with:
Please visit this page from any computer on the corporate network to automatically enable access for your account.
Which means this remains internal to Google right now. But look for it soon. Click on the image below for a slightly larger version.

i dont use anything thats in google labs. Its all just a bunch of stuff not worthy for use (hence why its in labs)
im being serious. if they thought it was any good they would implement this.
yeah, nothing cool has ever come out of google labs. only probably half the google things you use.
have = half?
I think he meant Half Leo. Use your head a.k.a imagination! wierdo.
MG, I only use Search and Gmail. Shame on you for judging us.
Well if you use search, then you use suggestions and suggestions came out of labs.
So half of the stuff you use is from labs
yes, half, like i said
Yep i agree.. most of the best google products that we see are originated from the labs!
Google is how do you say? opening up the toystore…lots of toys but no one is really buying.
Hi, I’m Google and I have 1 million tools available for your enjoyment.
Hi, I’m Reality and you’re just using Search. Have a nice day.
lol thats funny and true! Doubts $GOOG really has any other money makers except search atleast softee has XBOX hardware and software
So let’s see a company that had a monopoly and never created a single product on its own that was worth a damn is more impressive to you than the most talented and efficient technology company in world history. Are you just mad because you flunked out of village idiot school?
Let me help you-did IE eat Netscape’s lunch by making a “profit”? no. They could afford to crush their competitor without making a dime. Learn something , any thing and stop embarassing yourself.
Umm, technically search is a software. It’s an aggregation of numerous “software” running on tens of thousands of servers in Google datacenter. So is gmail, docs, Picasa, maps, blogger, Youtube and Orkut, just to name the big “software”. Then there are hundreds of software that you don’t even hear about like bigtable, mustang, MR etc.
There’s also Google’s search appliance which I heard they build on their own.
It’s actually a compliment to a company when users are ignorant of the underlying technical details because it means they got it right.
what products have you brought to market? What company did you start? What company did you build? Frequently nobody knows what is and is not going to be a great product. Would you prefer that Google did nothing but search. Would that make you happy? The arrogance of the posts on this site is really rather remarkable.
Shut up. Try something if you don’t like it then don’t use it. If you like or dislike it-post something of value. In any event you should enjoy toy stores because you have a lot of growing up to do.
Wow…the nerve! I have never! obviously JT is Sergey Brin. Look Sergey I was just making conversation…Google is cool. Its like a thinkbox, but the honest truth is your Google is mostly used for Search.
Search is cool, why not innovate on that? I’m sorry if I came out rather cheeky.
ummm… Flipper is search.
In case you haven’t noticed…
It was somewhere in the middle of that.
You guys SO do not get google. You should be banned from ever using it!
Every large company has a development / Experimental team.
After all… most major car companies build race engines for little to no profit that only a few people will use.
But, they do get publicity and valuable research that goes into that little 4 cyclinder in your Civic.
Agreed *
Why do people label Google as a 1-trick pony? It’s ridiculous… Mail, Video, Docs, CHROME, They are killing it… News and Reader need work, but are still widely used by a lot of people. It is small potatoes compared to their search revenue, but another company with any of their sub products would be considered a really big deal in the tech world. So at least some credit is due to the search giant.
the answer is because people who have never done anything and don’t know much get their jollies by posting condescending and idiotic posts….
I’m yet to find an RSS aggregator that is anywhere near as useful as Google Reader, particularly for large amounts of feeds.
Tell that to all the people using GMail and YouTube…
Tell that to Adsense users, or those who needed customer service in general, GOOGLE GROUPS KILL THE USENET EXPERIENCE…yada, tofu and omega03 fatty acids on a bottle of rum…
Those of use who used a network, even an intranet prior to the nineties could gag on a spoon if we didn’t have the Zen to call this remote s— procedure and overload your stacks.
Flipper always had to hop back in or his skin would dry out, even though he breathed air.
ditto here
GMail is technically still in Beta. You don’t make much sense and are a snob…
I like Google and it hurts me that you are defending it so zealously. Please be nice.
I don’t care whose boogers are green.
Everything Google makes goes into labs first. And afterwords, it goes into Beta for a LONG time.
It’s so ridiculous that you act like you are cool by saying its stupid!
Whatever… do what you want!
Come on you can trust Google for applications launched and also the ones in lab. It deserves the trust!
BTW, I have a question to ask. My gmail account got hacked, and by the ‘Activity Log’ feature of Google, I could figure out the IP address from where my email account was logged in.
The IP was 204.15.23.171
I do not know how to figure out which browser is this. Is there any software that can figure out whose machine is this where my account was opened and emails were tampered.
Try this..
http://www.aaft...p;sm=Web+Search
Looks like someone from facebook hacked ur gmail:
http://ws.arin....t=204.15.23.171
204.15.23.171 is a Facebook Inc. IP. Classic.
Unless it’s hacked.
You guys and this retarded WHOIS as COP thing. It needs a little more than that unless 99% of kids are as dumb as we gather.
It’s not a BROWSER.
It’s an internet protocol (IP) address and really it could tell next to nothing anyway.
Call your ISP.
I like it..I open Google News every few hours, and would absolutely welcome any improvements to the interface, considering how much I depend on the service.
Any idea when I’ll be able to get access to this? When is it going into “Beta”?
I liked this better when it was called Safari 4.
Good said….
?
this isn’t history… it’s new content.
But he does have a point. The content may be different but the interface is like Safari 4’s history thing.
In Safari, it isn’t necessarily news, but instead websites you have visited the most. When something new gets posted it gets a star.
Anyway, it is pretty similar!
true, it may look similar (and Safari 4 was hardly the first to do that), but in reality, it’s not really that similar.
Oops, it’s that awful RSS reader thing again. Gakk, Now we’ll type til we diiiiEEEEEEEEEEE!
Yeah google has to get these things out into reality and not just in the labs, there is competition in site with bing increasing its search percentages.
I love that Google puts these things out there relatively earlier. It’s fun for us and smart for them as they receive actual, like, user feedback. If some of the above knew anything about development, they’d know that’s a critical step, and instead of a canner focus group, they get real live users.
If they allow screenshot capture, then it will be really cool. I don’t have to use Evernote, just use my Google account and I can attach on email right away or share on Reader.
Google Flipper kind of looks like it’s a bunch of thumbnails.
yep, but it looks like it will be easy to read the headlines from them, which is nice.
Groups seem nice. Thumbs, not so much.
I liked it the first time I saw it — at http://fichey.com
Is this a study to determine how much copywritten material they can appropriate at one time?
This was a pretty cool service 15 years ago when it was called PointCast
no shit…
I like the look of that. Let’s face it, we live in an increasingly visual world and personally, if a blog post doesn’t have some form of illustration I’m quickly inclined to leave. On the downside – let’s not get stuck on brief glances and superficial judgements. Especially when it comes to complex things like worlds affairs or actually, a simple human being.
A full screenshot of external news pages? This should give NYT and other traditional co’s on the Google warpath enough ammunition to file a legit copyright infringement case. Thank you Google!
Is it just me or do people here too think that Bing will eat big into Google pie, and their profits will shrink big time?
Not good when your entire business revolves around one single product offering that could be eroded by a strong competitor in a matter of a few years
Now I HAVE to ask!
Does everything ELSE Google does SUCK SO BAD that people only credit their search engine?
I’ve never particularly enjoyed Google News, maybe because the layout is a little too messy and wordy. Maybe this would be a welcome change.
MESSY?
It’s a simple whitw page and as unclutted at HOME as it can get!
Now I know you don’t even know which one you are talking about.
if you wnat to try a search portal instead of just goofle try http://targ8.com
if you want to try a search portal instead of just google try http://targ8.com
