Earlier tonight, we spent some time at an open house to show off the new Facebook Headquarters in Palo Alto, California. Previously, the company had its HQ on what’s considered to be Palo Alto’s downtown area on University Ave. But that HQ was spread across a collection of buildings, and at nearly 1,000 employees now, Facebook grew too big for that. It needed a campus.
The new HQ is massive — some 150,000 square feet. It’s in a building that used to be owned by HP, but has been vacant for several years. It’s not only much bigger, but it’s much more open, so employees can actually see who they work with now. Check out the pictures and video of the tour below.

thats awesome
facebook is expanding.
facebook’s going places. Looked for to find a table tennis photo.
don’t worry, this is a temporary home. They’ll be moving again in 2 years.
Go Facebook!!!!!!!
A li’l birdie once told me that FB din’t have enough funding and were headed for trouble?
Hey whats up, hey I was wondering if facebook would be interested in sponsoring us here at United Family Entertainment for our event coming in August at Hawthorne Race Track, we will be putting on a Monster Truck, Car and Bike Shine Show and have ATV Racing and as our Grand Marshall’s we will be featuring Bill and Joey Gratzianna from the hit T.V. Show known as wrecked from Speed Channel, and just wondering if you couldn’t sponsor us with money I was wondering if you would like to put something on facebook to help promote our event so people all over will be able too see it…Thank You
video is horrible. wtf was it filmed with? an iphone? maybe you should invest in a video camera for the sake of not having to film with a phone and shaky hands?
how long before mike mentions how facebook is so evil for not allowing nudity but allowing free speech?
I find that with the demise of old media the quality of video and audio production goes with it. Please new media look to the old guard for at least production value tips. What’s the point of video taping the office tour if the footage is un-watchable as it is here. Flips are for home movies not professional content. Also tripods and any device that can steady your shot would be great too.
Not trying to rag too much but this was pretty bad guys.
Where are the pictures?
Coming in a second, had to disable the plug-in with all of them quickly.
The house that Racism built. Hmm. Maybe I should logout of my Facebook Connect listing. Hmm. Maybe Arrington should disable this racist login feature.
Too much coffee today, eh?
Looks good!
I think i am getting a headache just watching the video.
bro, its the iphone. its revolutionary 1.5 mp video camera that comes equipped with shaky hands and an owner with an ego.
1. I can’t wait for the whole hipster scene do die and 2. Is this kid doing coke, he touches his nose enough
i am wish to join Facebook, Facebook seems like a Very very big company!
Any chance of a gallery that works in firefox?
Fire whoever found that shit hole. give me a break.
Thank gosh they are not trying to sell anything.. talk about a wasted chance to have some fun…
if i could work there… hrmmmmmm
I hate to tell you this, but you can work at about 10,000 places like this in California by checking Craigslist for a Software Job.
If you’re qualified that is.
The place looks run down. How depressing. I’ll stick to my workplace thanks.
Looks great ..!! relax ..!! sports
hmm. NOTICE: YOU WILL BE SUBJECT TO SEARCH / NOTICE: WORK AREAS SUBJECT TO SEARCH hanging around like that isn’t really inspiring…
it’s a joke smart guy
gaspssss noe waiii…
on the other hand, if google did that then it might be funny
Notice also the cameras in the celling.
Screw that, no way in hell I would work for a company that pulls that shit. The number of signs they have saying that really indicates they are very serious about doing it as well.
.. not like I would have wanted to work for them anyway.
What does that even mean? Search for WHAT? Really, I’ve no clue.
In case of a crime investigation, be it an inside investigation without any government authority (e.g. police) that’s just common sense that the security staff can check the desks, and if the police is involved, it’s also a d’oh.
Plus they really should hire a designer/typographer, those letter signs are just sad.
DotCom illusion of community, no personal space. Toward end of video guy even says “most provide approx. 200 sq ft per person – we have that down to 10×12. jail cells w/o the privacy of walls. How nice.
Wow! Where is Facebook HQ detail address?
I try to take a look!
Wow… that’s crazy. I’m pretty sure I had a tour of that building like 10 years ago…. and it IS big!
Was HP there then?
What happened to Ireland? Wasn’t there talk about Facebook moving their headquarters to Ireland due to taxes, workers comp, and other financial issues?
Regardless, nice offices but it looks like no one has any privacy in these offfices. I mean, they are not even cubicles.
I do, however, like the idea that the tables are on wheels. Are there any laptop lap desks in the bathrooms too?
Nah, Irish corporate tax law means you just have to have a couple of employees (typically call centre McJobs) in Ireland to justify funnelling your profits through our little tax haven ^H^H^H^H^H^H republic.
Of course, facebook doesn’t make a profit, does it?
looks like a computer lab in a university
You mean the space or the employees (img_4090 on the left)?
Totally uncreative and uninspiring, fits facebook
Wow. Talk about breaking news. I’ll alert the AP.
Its amazing how a site that has never made a profit can afford an office like that.
Good luck in the future Facebook. Heh
Enjoy spending your invisible dollars. Your company is doomed
they’ve raised > $700m, they could rent taj mahal god damnit.
They were actually considering renting the Taj Mahal, but then the Slumdog kids came along and took their wallets so they decided against it.
$700M which they will spend in approx. 3 months, you mean.
$700M that they will spend in approximately 3 months, you mean.
$700M that they will spend in approximately 3 months, you mean.
$700M that they will spend in approximately 3 months, you mean.
It’s funny how viewing the same pictures we can reach such differences in perspective. I see an open airy environment, free of the conventionality of cubicles and restrictive space, and environment with open areas for an exchange of ideas or just a friendly glance. Someone else sees a college computer lab, absent and sort of atmosphere…uninspired.
Very interesting!

Yes, my first impression was of east Asian sweatshop. Then again it’s some time since I worked in true open space.
I felt like it was a pretty open environment, for the record.
You look like a man with “open” mind.
Proofread, always proofread! UGH!
“an” not and “any” not and
See, even a prof can mess up here and there! Besides, it’s 3amEST! What am I doing commenting at this time of day?
Rust never sleeps!

LOOKS LIKE A SWEATSHOP! You can’t be kidding people like to work there!?!
I was expecting amazing offices. My office is way cooler than this. It looks like an old university building. Of course a cool company to work for but as mentioned above there is so many other companies with much better buildings. Anyway im off to play Fifa on the big screens!
They always say ‘open floor plans build community’ – that is complete BS. The truth is they are much cheaper and unfortunately ridiculously noisy and hard to concentrate in.
+1
The office looks really naked, not really nice for company like facebook.
But I like the word ‘focus’ near toilet door.
But shouldn’t “focus” be near the Men’s Room door, just as a gentle reminder?
yehforgames and power leveling
Some of those first pictures look like a sweat shop.
(just noted others made similar comments! )
Their is some irony in that now that I think about it.
Guess it was a bit of a slow day on the IT news front to cover a tour of building. Its not even a new building.
That is what I always pictured a sweatshop to look like.
1,000 employees x $500 per Aeron chair = $500k in chairs alone. Gotta love the US of A.
i wonder how any serious developer can concentrate in such an envrioment.
Constant interruptions through noise and people walking by, asking shit etc.
Much more industial than Google!
Where are their computers? i see loads of monitors but no computers? Are they all secondary monitors to the laptops? If that’s the case that sucks!! I run a new mb pro but even that gets a little slow and tempermental by the end of the day. I recon i would get really peaved if i had to work on it every day.
As this post is a prime example of what im not interested in.
Would anyone like to suggest alternatives to techcrunch.com. For anywhere in the world too.
I have only been a reader for the last 6months and sometimes I find it quite dull. At best.
Equally, to the guys at techcrunch. This is not an insult. As I would be surprised if im alone it just demonstrates a thirst for something.
wow photos of an office. id better get outta here cos the content is just toooo exciting.
Nice one Mahatma Gandhi Siegler.
George
i don’t like the office space either, whatever happened to Gothic romanticism, architecture with abundance of style, pillars that meant something, exotic lighting, stained glass windows that made a movie from every sunrise & sunset, if i had that much money i would be searching for all those qualities, give me rendered walls washed in lime with colors from Morocco… for those people that don’t know what i’m talking about look at these links

Those picture look horrable to me. How are you expected to concentrate on work in such a warehouse setting where everyone is distracting everyone?
Wow, that looks terrible to be honest. It looks like they were trying to copy Googleplex, but failed miserably.
Nice setup. I’d post some pics of the SlideSix HQ, but it looks just like any other Starbucks in the country.
bleh. i’ll take my attic studio over this any day
What exactly do 1000 employees do at Facebook? The company I work for has only a few hundred and generates hundreds of millions in actual PROFIT.
This is Web 2.0 Baby ! We give everything away for free, but we make up for it in Bulk !
Like those basketball courts will be ever be used
Let’s do the fast forward math on Facebook:
High burn rate + no viable revenue streams = massive layoffs
Enjoy the Aeron chairs for now, but I give FB a year before they have to start truly catering to advertisers and thereby alienating their core users.
When their headquarters were small and open, it actually looked kind of cozy and nice. Felt startuppy.
Big and open kind of makes it feel like a sweat shop. Makes you realize you are really 1 out of 1000 cogs. I’m not sure if this is better or worse than cubes.
However, the inside of the building looks nice!

What a big bloody cliche…. that kid was in diapers in the dot.gone years…same old same old….
AWEFUL!
I’d like to see Mark’s office.
….and how do they pay for all of this unnecessary bullshit? With borrowed money, of course!
Absolutely fucking brilliant! The bubble is back, baby!!
Absolutely Horrible! My work environment wipes the floor with this drivel concrete slab of an office.
I like the location, but wow, concrete floors? open floor plan? That place is going to be incredibly noisy and distracting.
Yawn. For a company that thinks it is worth 1 billion dollars this is the most boring and poorly designed office space I have ever seen.
A team of monkeys ran the Ethernet cable with no care, etc. What a waste.
