[...] This past June I had the privilege of traveling to East Asia with a group of techies on a trip dubbed GeeksOnAPlane. The experience was a quick-and-dirty way to familiarize myself with the tech industries of Japan and China, since we were herded through back-to-back conferences and networking events meant to give us primers on a number of sectors such as web, mobile, and gaming (you can read about what I learned in each of those countries here and here).
Download QQ, install, set privacy to "open" and if you're in the right age demographic, you'll receive a crapload of add request every hour while you're online.

I'm still consistently awed by the growth of net users in China, many of whom are constantly using the web as a source to reach out to people beyond their immediate social circle. There's probably a better term to describe the trend that's occurring in China's younger generation of web users, but loneliness is definitely a part of it.

It's unfortunate that the language barrier often prevents people from seeing another country's Internet community first hand. There's a difference between seeing a Chinese web community presented via a slide versus actually sitting down and searching through the major search engines yourself. Most people are probably aware of this already, but being able to speak another language will often open a person to an entirely different Internet experience.

@owen - none of these three is a very common inducement for China's game players. Frank's comment about 'loneliness' is right on the mark: Chinese kids generally have small social circles and therefore come to feel isolated and stifled. Online games provide a multitude of ways for gamers to reach out to strangers in a mostly anonymous format, in ways that they would never consider IRL.

I see. Thank you. Well, the problem is that gaming perhaps will only make the loneliness problem worse. I don't really believe this explanation. I thought people play games more in China because:

(1) those who are rich (or having a rich dad) and full of free time. They play to kill time. But they don't want the painful part, so they buy virtual goods with real money.

(2) those who are poor and out of job. They play to get the virtual goods and sell them to (1).

(3) retired people.

Actually, I was the one who used the word loneliness in the presentation in Beijing. And I meant Loneliness not boredom. The term originally came from a NetEase Game Designer during GDC 2007 Shanghai. Loneliness in the sense of a certain isolation of having siblings and knowing that you are the sole support for your family. Perhaps malaise or ennui is a better term but boredom is not the correct term for the feeling of anxiety and emptiness that some young people feel.

Yes, but China is hardly socialist. And though the government does violate numerous human rights, this article addresses the issue of web censorship, which works differently in China to how it is often portrayed in Western media.

I'm on the trip out here and I haven't heard of a single .cn domain - it's all .com out here. They spell the words (domain names) the way they sound in Mandarin - pretty interesting.
