The Daily Show does a much better job than I did ripping the New York Times. “What’s that? A landline phone? Ha! Look at me. I’m like a reporter from the 80’s.” (Here’s the video on Comedy Central, for our international friends).

hulu is geotarded, comedy central is not .. if you want it seen
hulu is US-only… since when is the Internet local?
BBC and Sky also refuse to allow their online video to be seen here in the US
Apparently it all comes down to local broadcasting rights and licences, and there was a theory once that the internet was rebellious enough to break this rule but still stay with in the law. The likes of Shawn Fanning and Napster started breaking that rule so badly it snapped and legislators are still picking splinters out of their arses.
it’s just a black box??

just watching it…
”Give me one thing in there that happened today” …
priceless
The best is that after he asked for one thing that happened today, the guy actual thought about it for a second!
Please TC stop linking to videos that 90% of the worlds population cannot view.
Agree completely.
TC needs to stop thinking so parochially. At least summarise in text whatever is in the video, so that the blog entry makes some sense.
click on my link (previous comment) . skip to 4:30 to watch it
@igniman
That link is still geo-blocked. However this clip isn’t:

Works for me (i ‘m in Greece). Damn the dying television industry!
the comment just makes no sense. If i don’t post it no one sees it. If i post it some people can see it. the people who couldn’t see it still can’t see it. In other words, don’t let jealousy drive your every thought.
But Michael, would you write occasional posts that can only be viewed in IE, and everyone else gets a “sorry, you should use IE” screen? That would be preferable to Hulu, which tells us “sorry, you should move to the US!”
If these videos are just “asides” and not really newsworthy, then should they be posted at all?
Love the site, keep it comin!
Thanks for the Comedy Central link!
If you have to post content that only some people will see properly – wouldn’t the best thing be to do it, but include a warning in the subject?
For example “Daily Show Rips The New York Times (Hulu)” or “Great new game (requires Silverlight)”
@mark and dasein.
Are you completely helpless or do you just enjoy being annoying? Instead of complaining, you could have put “The Daily Show New York Times” in a google search and watched the video in the time it took you to post these complaints. Start being proactive and stop your whining.
You tell them! I hate it when TC write articles pertaining to a parish.
Man, I can’t believe they let them in there to do a show like that on them.
why would they agree to let the daily show do this?
why not? they don’t accuse the nytimes of anything, TDS is just commenting on the dying newspaper industry
the dude hold the phone up and literally makes fun of them right to their faces, i actually felt bad for them even though its true what you say.
actually, they did point out some misleading headlines from the past
So, in order to help the (dying) industry, why don’t you all once a week and one day on the weekend, just get off your fat arses and go away from your computer terminal, down to the newsagents and instead of complaining about it on all these chat boards, just fucking go out and do something worthwhile. BUY A NEWSPAPER !?!?
For reporting of events, you can’t beat the electronic media formats, but this can also apply to television media as well.
As an editorial and analysis tool, and more importantly (whether these publications exist on the web or not) is a good example of an ARCHIVE of what the news was that day, from various perspectives, because the websites aint gonna be so prodigious in doing that.
so we should go out of our way to kill more trees? that doesn’t seem like it will fix anything.
Ya know, I signed up for that web program that the NYT started a couple of years ago. I paid them something like $7 or $9/mo. I didn’t really go to their site any more than usual (after paying them), I just wanted them to have money to continue investigative journalism. What did they do? They stopped the program and stopped taking my money.
I’m still scratching my head over that one.
Can someone please post a link to another host that doesn’t block most of the world ?
Yet another viewer who can’t see hulu videos because he isn’t in the USA. Highly recommend you seek an alternative video service.
malarious stuff
Next we will see it on ‘Weeds’

The best part is when he asks the editor to point to one thing in the paper that happened today and he can’t. Aged News vs. Real News.
Please tell me you’re not taking the interview at face value. Yes, it was funny. But they often use this modern technique called editing to make it look like someone was totally befuddled by a simple question. Maybe he was, but it’s not that straight forward. It’s the freakin’ Daily Show.
“Name one thing that happened in there today” LOL
The problem with the NYT is I am starting to have to do my own fact-checking.
Kinda like going to a restaurant and being forced to prepare your own food and wait on yourself.
Except, neither video works in Canada.
TechCrunch : Daily Show Rips The New York Times {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/nt15Ft2dx9_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”TechCrunch : Daily Show Rips The New York Times ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/UB4f4AMGyt”}}}
I share your frustration, but your decision to make a video saying that you can’t see the video is a little weird!
I wouldn’t mind Comedy Central blocking Canada so much if the redirect notice actually went to the equivalent video on The Comedy Network. :/
How come the editor didn’t laugh at the joke??
Black & White and Red all over …the NYT balance Sheet!
Great stuff!
Hope theses guys find a way to evolve their jobs/industry or they are toast.
I think he’d laugh if they had a plan by now to evolve their jobs/industry.
What I don’t get is why they rip on Google who is only aggregating the news and not doing and subsitutional reporting. Did I miss something?

Aged News < Real News …great segment
That was harsh and hilarious
“So it’s even older? .. Depends on your perspective.”
lol.
Oh my gosh, let that be a case study on how important it is to have a joke ready when being interviewed by the Daily Show. The alternative is far, far worse.
Ouch!
well, remember that the Daily Show gets to edit and produce the segment as well, making themselves look even more in control. No way I’d have let them in our offices if I was the NY Times.
My favorite line:
“What’s black, white and read all over?”
He smiles, “A newspaper”.
“No, your balance sheet!”, says CC.
That’s almost as bad as this: A driving instructor comes up to a junction on the road, turns and asks his student “what goes green amber red, red amber green?” thinking fast, the student answers with reply “Traffic lights” and the driving instructor takes out a packet of sweets and says “No, it’s wine gums! want one?”
It’s as banal and pathetic as the “newspaper balance sheet” answer.
interesting they lost half of their income to craigslist and craigslist is now the villain. It was obvious a while ago that the old media was going to go after the Internet. They are done losing money to these Internets…
Ad income. Classifide ads
meant to say ad income from the classifieds
i watched it last night on tivo. it was painful. my wife and i were wondering who in god’s name at the times let that happen. i love when they attack fox. but the times? can’t handle it.
it’s still the best newspaper in the world. their tech coverage sucks but there is so much good.
I have to agree with you David. Everyone thinks that newspapers are dead, but I think the argument can be made that newspapers today are read more for their editorial commentary, more so then their actual report on events of the world. This puts them at a disadvantage in terms of timeliness, but they still are able to compose articles that are more meaningful then single paragraph posts like mine =P
It’s the content sir. Presenting editorial material as fact, misreprestning or intentionally omitting relevant facts, etc. The Old Gray Lady hasn’t been a trusted source for some time.
Check out how they handled the Duke lacrosse hoax. Pitiful.
The lack of trust ran off readers, ad revenues fall and they continue to disenfranchise at least one-half of their readers. The critical thinking one.
Sorry, but just because the NYT can’t make money doesn’t mean they suck. For all the bashing they get, they are still the paper of record. Name one online-only source that is anywhere near the quality of the NYT (or the WSJ for that matter).
Maybe the coverage did some good. Their stock priced jumped up $.02 since the show aired.
http://finance....ource=undefined
No one is better than ripping the New York Times than the popular Fox News talk host, Bill O’Reilly.
“But your life boat is made of paper..” Hilarious!!!
That is the funniest thing I have ever seen…..no that is the saddest thing I have ever seen.
Its like they don’t understand or can’t see it coming. Maybe they refuse to see it coming? I can’t believe everyone working there hasn’t bailed already.
This is just like the car industry….in 3 years they will be going bankrupt and expect a government handout. All the workers will be complaining that they lost their jobs and were left at the alter by the company.
Sad sad sad.
I really don’t get why the NYT would agree to participate in that segment… it makes them look like a bunch of morons denying the inevitable.
I can always see Daily Show clips (in the UK) at Indecision Forever. That’s not blocked:
http://www.inde...?videoId=230076
Um, I don’t want to be insensitive to the rest of the world, but TechCrunch.com is an American company, with mostly American writers. What’s the problem with linking to American video sites? I realize the internet is a international venue for information, but I don’t get all bent out of shape when I read a .uk news site and can’t access the BBC videos they link to.
I don’t particularly see a ‘problem’ with linking to American video sites, but it can be a little frustrating to us in other countries.
If the title were prefixed “US Only:” I’d have just skipped over it, instead of clicking though to the site, clicking the flash icon (I use flashblock to block pre-loading videos) and then waiting only to be told I wasn’t allowed.
“but I don’t get all bent out of shape when I read a .uk news site and can’t access the BBC videos they link to.”
Well it depends if Techcrunch wants to be a US website or an international website. If a UK website was by UK people for UK people then you’d forgive them many BBC links. If they said they wanted to be a UK-based international website but kept linking to BBC Iplayer you’d eventually think “well you don’t really want me do you” and go elsewhere.
Can we get a Canadian link. Hulu and Comedy Central videos are both blocked in Canada
If TechCrunch wants to be U.S. only I should just unsubscribe your feed. If not, then don’t support services that make use of geo-restrictions…
Hulu can not be shown outside the USA dumb move posting Hulu for international viewers also real Dumb that Hulu and other media groups don’t care about the millions of Americans overseas
I’m going out on a limb here and saying “news” is a service industry and many service industries, not just newspapers, will suffer from their over-dependence or over-exposure to overhead. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of our lives. Even TechCrunch will rue the day it paid for office space and installed everyone in cubes.
I find this “coverage” ironic because I am deep into Web 2.0, a big believer, and NYT is one of my favorite news destinations online. NYT need not, should not die. It just needs to go completely online. Put all your archives online. Cover news to be published immediately. 100% ad model. Encourage others to link to your articles. Dominate the search engine results. Go multi-media. Get the top, lone, super niche bloggers to contribute on a per post, for pay basis. Even more important, have a thriving comments section. Readers don’t want to just read. Stop calling them readers. That is so yesterday. Call them consumers cum contributors. Become a megasite that is megainteractive. Appoint a CTO. Don’t die. Reinvent yourself. News is more important than ever in this new age. But the old medium has become indefensible. Face the reality and live, thrive.
Hulu is annoying for us Canadians… I really wish TechCrunch would stop linking them.
However, the daily show is availible to Canadians via:
http://www.thec...s.aspx?sid=3350
thanks for the shoutout to those of us living abroad!
What caused the Gray Lady to allow the Daily Show into the paper to do an interview. Did they not realize that by the nature of the venue they would come off looking silly. They had to be in on the joke, the assistant editor who had the discussion with Jason about “Aged News” had to be in on the joke …. nobody could have come off that rediculous.
Just to say: thank you for not forgetting the non-US people.
Oldthinker like the New York Times (and French media who hates new medias) never remind that the web has few boundaries.
