This is a silly article. I would say that many people would prefer a physical keyboard to a virtual one. That’s why people who text a lot use devices that have them, like the Sidekick for example. Virtual keyboards are a lot less accurate. You can’t really form much muscle memory to the keys or type by touch because they register the wrong keys when you type too fast. The author of this article was clearly out of good material to write about.

I just got my G1 last week and for the most part I love it, the only thing that I can think of right now that I do not like about it is the keyboard, its like the buttons are not tall enough or something.

I hate to feed the fire of hatred already burning this guy up from the inside, but I just tried his “e” shortcut on my keyboardless Google Ion and it worked just fine, so you really don’t need a physical keyboard at all.

Hold down the Menu key for two seconds to pop up the virtual keyboard from anywhere.

The G1’s keyboard is actually pretty good. I am sure MG just played with it for an hour like most so called “reviewers”.

It’s probably not the best keyboard on a phone out there but it is no where near the worst. I actually prefer using it over the virtual most of the time unless it’s something short I can type with on the virtual which still needs some work.

I’m sick of TC writing this crap about the G1’s keyboard, if you can’t type on it you’re obviously a moron. It’s an awesome keyboard and I bet most g1 owners could out-type virtual keyboard users any day of the week.

Obviously you’ve not used a G1 for any significant time. TC should be publishing better articles than this bs.

The lip at the end did annoy me in the beginning but I adapted within days and now have no problems with it. IMHO, the keyboard itself works just fine, its responsive and the keys are easy to touch feel for typing. I send/receive an average of 4-5 thousand text messages a month and the keys have not worn down or lost any of their ‘feel’. They also light up from underneath for low light typing. While I would agree it could be a tad bigger, it most certainly does not “suck”.

I hate the new on-screen keyboard. The keys are too small and I spend more time correcting than typing. After a week I turned it off and haven’t missed it once.

It would be nice if TC could list articles like this as opinion vs fact since you provide no proof other than personal opinion.

The Pre’s keyboard, while not being as good as the Blackberry, is way better than the iPhone’s virtual keyboard. It does feel cheap, I give you that, but it is VERY functional and I type at least twice as fast on it as I do on the iPhone keyboard with it’s endless less than awesome spell correction suggestions.

Another note, the iPhone bias on this site is pretty thick, you guys might want to be a bit more objective when it comes to mobile phones.

Any reason for that?

I didn’t think TC was the kind of place where I’d have to start saving my comments locally using a special clipboard just to prove that I made them, nor did I think it was the kind of place where I’d have to screen cap each comment after I posted it to prove that TC editorial staff has since removed it. I can always resort to such proof though. I’ve been visiting TC and making comments on it for three years without any incident that I can recall so I can’t imagine what the problem is now.

G1 Keyboard is fab, and lightyears more usable than G2/Ion virtkeys.

I agree – I am mystified by this rant. I like the G1 keyboard, it’s actually the main reason I bought the phone. I’ve used various blackberries and the Iphone, and the G1 is is far superior IMO.

Maybe the poster is an Apple fanboi. That’s the only explanation that makes sense…

I believe that, although the iPhone is a superior piece of hardware overall, the G1’s physical keyboard facilitates quicker typing.

It’s hands down the best application on the Android Market right now (and it’s only $1.99). I just got done playing a season of Tecmo Football. I love that you can save the season and come back to it later on. So, I play whenever I am waiting for my gf to finish getting ready to go out. PERFECT.

I had a Blackberry before switching to the G1 and I am much more impressed with the G1. I’m a pretty big guy I guess and my blackberry always felt cramped but the G1 has been great.

You know, it’s kind of sad when you have the majority of readers actually taking the time to respond to an article like this because the writer is a biased hater. It’s even worse when the vast majority of actual owners disagree with you.

What a horrible article.
