Well I still haven't made the upgrade yet. I am fine with the less storage. My phone still fills my needs perfectly and the MMS Update worked with my phone partially. I did not get the video update obviously since a video recorder is not accessible on my phone, but I did get MMS picture sharing at no cost.

No one forced you to pick up your current iPhone at a subsidized price in exchange for a two year contract
Ignorant... A contract is an exchange for value implied. If ATT holds itself out as a viable carrier with signal coverage in most areas, great. When it fails to provide even close to reasonable value, they have broken the contract. A good dose of open competition accross the board would bring the wireless industry to step up their game.

I can see the validity of capitalist argument that AT&T must make money etc. . . however, shouldn't part of that also be the exclusivity that is mentioned in the original article (above)?
It seems that it would be in Apple's best interest to broaden its distribution. It is clearly in AT&T's interest to keep exclusivity. As a consumer, I would be much happier if I could take my iPhone to another carrier. Verizon has customer service that is much more in line with Apple's high level of customer care. Not to mention that it would add some competition to the market. . . where's that in the discussion about AT&T needing to do what's best for their bottom line. . . what about ours. . . the argument that 'you signed a contract - now eat it' is garbage because they are the only option. . . and let's face it for many of us a smart phone is a necessary tool for our jobs.

What I do hear from a lot of my Blackberry friends are complaints about usability and the phone breaking. None of my blackberry friends really ENJOY their phones as much as I do nor do they do as much on them. Just sayin.

I'd add the following three facts:

1) iPhone is UNLIKELY to migrate to Verizon because it uses older tech, CDMA. It wouldn't even be a true world phone.

2) Yeah, AT&T has its problems. But the grass is always greener on the other side. Verizon has its faitr share of complaints. (In a perfect world, Cingular would still exist and have the iPhone).

3) iPhone IS NOT AN UNFAIR DEAL. The ONLY EXTRA CHARGES are for internet, totalling $720 over life of a 2yr contract. But given a $300-$400 break on the phone, this is negligable! Besides, you would pay the same for unlimited data on ANY smartphone.

Correct. In Europe, only the person calling your mobile phone pays. Receiving calls is totally free. Europe is much smarter in such matters---but then look at their buried electrical lines, high tech levies, etc. They think ahead and plan for the social good, not purely for profit.

I agree with the authors analysis. Fundumentally all cell carriers are extorting money out of us for a service that is less reliable than a string stretched between two cups. And I don't see enough reasons to upgrade, though I'll pay my $200 cancellation fee the moment I can get an iphone that works on a carrier other than AT&T. A year+ later and we still don't have SMS messages (jeez - the $50 phone my GF bought 2 years ago does that!) thanks to both AT&T and Apple.

And I 100% agree that I'd be fine with paying $600 for the phone and paying a monthly fee with *NO* contract and no contract breaking fee. Isn;'t that what the insipid $36 fee is to have someone spend 5 minutes typing into a computer and activating my phone is for?

TechCrunch let it go! You guys have been harping on this for some time now and I think everyone, including AT&T, gets it which is why they HAVE extended an olive branch to many iPhone users. But for goodness sakes - let it go!
