[...] And likewise, without knowing the details of its latest round, the $1 billion number probably does have meaning for Twitter. If an when it closes this latest $100 million round, those investors are going to be looking for an exit of more than $1 billion. You can bet that T. Rowe Price wants to make money on this deal, as do the firms involved. And they clearly think Twitter is worth more than $1 billion dollars. And they’re hardly alone. [...]

[...] The TechCrunch article by Erick Shonfeld, “If Facebook Is Worth $10 Billion, Twitter is Worth $1.7 Billion” discusses the new social networking valuation model which takes into account the size of each social network’s audience in different countries and the average online spending per capita in these countries. From these calculations, Facebook has been valued at $10 Billion – Twitter by similar methodology is $1.7 Billion The implications for small businesses? Social networking is a multi-billion dollar industry, continuously expanding and showing no signs of slowing down. I recall just a year or so when Facebook was valued at $1 Billion and that amazed me. While social networking may not be the right place for all small businesses to market themselves, it is a powerful tool that should definitely be given consideration. Don’t think your business is to small to create an internet following – you may just be surprised at who shows interest in the service/product you provide.
[...] Twitter’s worth has been pegged at $1.7bn by one industry commentator, using Russian Internet-investment group Digital Sky Technologies’ offer to invest $200 million in Facebook Inc. (at a $10 billion valuation for the company’s preferred stock) as the benchmark. Yet the jury remains firmly out as to the true value of Twitter and its peers, which have quickly built large subscriber bases but have yet to demonstrate significant revenues. Naturally, the marketing gurus believe that there is a rich vein of user information to be tapped via the digital communities forming within the Social Web, and that this information will, at some point, be converted into hard cash.
You obviously don't understand the IPO process like most TC readers. You need to find large institutional investors willing to buy tens of millions worth of Twitter--not a happenstance of blog readers who would buy a share or two.

It's way too simplistic to only factor in a website's userbase. Every application will monetize differently -- a user on froogle, for example, is going to be worth orders of magnitude more than a user on facebook, for obvious reasons.

The millions of people who see twitter on CNN or the countless other mainstream media outlets who are constantly going on about twitter would not pay a dollar to sign up for the service.

What Facebook has that Twitter does not is context and an understanding of relationships.

FB knows who I'm married to, they know who I went to school with, they know who I used to date. They know who my wife's college roomate was. They know who I work with, they know who I used to work with. They know who I inter-relate with and how often.

And we're not even getting into the fact that they have the largest crowd sourced facial identification library in the world.

Twitter doesn't know shit in comparison.

LinkedIn has to be worth more than Twitter!!! Average audience age 40+, Income $100k+, professionals, active user base, a lot more people that are connected, etc. I would put my money on LinkedIn over Twitter any day!

Your assumption is essentially "Completely ignoring their ability to monetize traffic, a social network is worth x% of $10b whereby x = % of Facebook traffic, scaled for location."

How much would you have valued Geocites at before they shut down a week ago?

>But before we can find out, Twitter needs to pick a business model.
LMAO!!!!

Simple way for Twitter to make money RIGHT NOW:

Charge $1.00 to sign-up. That's it. One stinking, measly dollar and they could have made hundreds of millions.

Of course, that doesn't help with ongoing expenses - so they might have to charge a yearly fee or something.
