Thought I lost my iphone this weekend. Went into ATT just to see how I go about replacing it. Was shocked to find out that you need to have it for 18 months before you are eligible for a new one, otherwise you pay the real price ($499 or $599). So upgrading is apparently not an option. But I would love to know if the ATT guys in Boston had their facts wrong.

I have an original iPhone, and have had it since its introduction 2 years ago. It has shown me exceptional performance since day one. Immediately after 2.0 was the only time I ever disliked my phone. but it was remedied with updates.

My battery life is nearly identical to day one, yet my usage has only increased. My signal is never great, but it was never great with my RAZR, or my Nokia before that. Simple fact, ATT leaves much to be desired.

I nearly upgraded to the 3G when it was released in 2008, but decided against it as neither of the locations I spend most of my time in have 3G coverage. Even now, 3G is not available in one of those area's, and only partially available in the other (though improving)

I will be upgraded this time around, as the GPS is a highly desired option for me now. I am an avid bike rider and have been manually logging my routes and all the information. But the GPS iPhone in compilation with iPod will make that so much more accurate and easier.

Had to factory restore a few times when debugging problems that eventually lead the Apple's replacing my iPhone. An 16GB unit which I kept loaded with music and apps totaling 14GB.

Restore time in this instance is measured in hours not minutes.

Apple has replaced my 3G twice since it battery life and heating problems and other screwy problems (random lockups during phone calls, unable to answer calls, ..) Twice the Apple Store Genies evaluated the unit after a phone service call and gave me a replacement on the spot. I think the software updates have helped with the quirks. My wife's phone bought the same time has never had any of the same problems (like losing a full charge while doing nothing overnight, or getting hot to the touch during use) so I guess I have unusual luck> Dunno. I buy Apple Care and though the service is a hassle (couldn't we just have things that work?). Don't wait for software changes to fix what are really hardware problems. The phone keeps more records than you'll ever see. I think the batteries are the weakest link but could just be me. Still get quirky happenings when even Apple Apps crash and I do reboot several times a week, backup frequently and so on. This is software problems now methinks

148 Apps.. clearly the normal use case.

My 1G still works like a champ. Reliable, no need to reset it, awesome battery life, and I have 20+ apps on it.

First, regarding the slowness, have you cleared out your old SMS text messages? They are stored in memory and as you send and receive texts they take up more memory.

Second, a factory reset is a piece of cake and should not take more than 10 mins depending on the number of applications you have on the iPhone.

I have been using an iPhone 3G for almost a year. I can honestly say this is one of the best productivity tools I own. That's not to say the iPhone does not have its' faults (no SMS pic messages, sub par camera etc.) but compared to all the other smart phones out there the iPhone offers so much more.

I am impressed with the initial reviews of the Palm Pre. Being able to run multiple applications will be a plus but it will come at a cost. ie. shorter battery life. I am sure the Palm Pre will do well against the iPhone but I really don't see many iPhone owners switching to the Pre, myself included.

I was not one of those who waited in line for hours to get the iPhone 3G and I will wait to see what the next iPhone has to offer before I decide to buy.

It's the same with any device like this; a complete reset every few years or so is pretty necessary to keep it running full speed. Same with PC's.

iPhones to be honest aren't that good the main problem being they are not a practical phone,

The Apps are great but their are BIG minus points.

No replaceable battery ( An extremely bad design if you are a business user and your battery goes down what next?, you return it to the apple store where you have to go without a phone for the next 2 weeks until it arrives back )

Your forced to buy another, also the screen is an absolute pain in the arse if you get it wet try and slide the bar to answer a call, its not gonna happen.

I've actually missed calls where I haven't been able to answer the phone quickly enough because of this design.

Overall I don't rate it as a serious business phone battery bit is stupid, its just to much of a gimmick nice yes but to easy to break and not at all practical with business use, Apple don't give away a pouch at this price you would expect atleast a pouch or a Apple protector of some kind with the design.

I too have experience the slowness of phone as well as lockups here and there.

As for the getting hot...I too have experienced it. At times I will just be standing and can feel the heat on my thigh that I have to take the phone out of my pocket. I've noticed that if you have the camera on, and then turn off the phone without exiting to the main screen the phone will heat up very quickly. But yes every once in awhile even if you do go to the main screen and then turn the phone off my phone will get overheated for no apparent reason.

I'm by no means a iPhone fanboy (see my other comments on tech blogs) but I wouldn't blame Apple's OS for the memory problem you're having.

If you're running out of memory it's more likely to be caused by poorly coded apps that have memory leaks. You'd want to blame the authors of those apps.

Also, the iPhone is the perfect planned obsolescence and DRM vehicle: It has no expandable storage, no way to connect peripherals other than headphones and audio/video docks and you can't replace it with another device because the device has to identify itself as an iPod/iPhone to work with iTunes.

Apple succeeded with 1984-ish DRM lockdown with their iPod/iPhone where Microsoft failed to do the same with their Windows OS by making preying on consumers' need to feel like they're a part of the majority.

Random interesting fact: Every time you push the Home button on your iPhone/iPod it takes a screen shot that is not deleted until the next time a screen shot is taken. The purpose is so it can transform the image when doing the animations, but since the devices can be manipulated remotely, if there was enough desire to, screen shots could be captured from your phone.

I'd love to have a broken screen if only my home button worked. Now I'm doing all kinds of weird workarounds (using webmail, etc.). When the humidity drops, it gets better.

The underlying "problem" is that Apple has built a phone so much better than all the others that we put up with this stuff. It's sort of like dating a really cute girl and putting up with her talking on the phone on a date. We will put up with a lot, but there is a limit!
