I'm studying new topics in twitter conversations using a real time system I built myself at http://web2express.org. In contrary to the small number of trending topics twitter provides, I just show them all. The reason is that accurately identifying significant, new, and hot topics all the time is still not a trivial thing to do. In my experiments, I try different combination of NLP and semantic technologies. But, no perfect solution yet. What matters is that, from the top 100 or 1000 topics, people can clearly see some breaking news or popular concerns. That's useful, I think. Also, keep in mind twitter has not done good job with cleaning up spam. So, no surprise when you see some wired stuff.

I’m studying new topics in twitter conversations using a real time system I built myself at http://web2express.org. In contrary to the small number of trending topics twitter provides, I just show them all. The reason is that accurately identifying significant, new, and hot topics all the time is still not a trivial thing to do. In my experiments, I try different combination of NLP and semantic technologies. But, no perfect solution yet.
