When the app store launched, I noticed how similar this was to the flash stock market. I won't name the websites here, but the market is pretty crowded.

I was doing fine, being on the top three list of one of these markets, but I soon noticed that if you don't keep marketing yourself, the position shifted from month to month, due to the large number of crappy files being uploaded on the website. This is exactly what is happening to the Apple Store as we speak.

This situation has put me in the position to create my own store, in which me and the team I lead are building the best Flash Components, and we're giving them away for free. This way we get the traction we need, but we also prepare ourselves for the final battle with the established competitors.

The problem is that in order to sell apps, you need to do it through Apple store, which wasn't the case for us. If Apple would allow any developers to sell their own apps, I bet there will be a lot of companies out there that will be more focused on marketing their own products, rather than expecting Apple to do everything for them (there is really no solution).

A fundamental paradox of the App Store seems to have emerged: the revenue potential from a moderately successful app may not be sufficient to fund the types of marketing that are needed to successfully launch an app.

The first problem is that the noise level on the App Store is so high that the types of promotion that are within the reach of an independent software developer may not be sufficient to get an app noticed.

The second major problem is that the market is too dynamic. The number of apps is doubling every three or four months. User expectations are rising. Niches are quickly becoming over saturated. And ASPs are dropping. Such dynamic conditions make "marketing and PR plans" the equivalent of fortune telling. They also work counter to a quality product development process with lots of up-front design based on deep product knowledge and research.

Without a huge marketing budget or Apple throwing blessings your way by way of featuring your app on the App Store front page or just dumb luck your app can't get noticed. I'm observing lots of quality apps fall off the charts even though they are doing their marketing correctly.

A high average payout would stimulate supply and further production of apps - which would bring the average payout down. Lots of media hype to raise expectations probably lowers the average payout.

If you pick a name for your app that people are likely to use as a search term, or build an app that interfaces to a well known brand name then you will get steady traffic. I put out one of the 20 or so different Netflix related apps last year, and get a few hundred downloads a day if it's free, and a few tens a day if it's 99c, for a total of over 20K copies so far. I also did an app for an unknown and unsigned band called Fractal, and that is getting around ten free downloads a day, I assume this is because there are several Fractal mandelbrot generator related apps that people search for. So be very careful to choose a good name or brand to piggyback on....

At 70% of $0.99 per unit and a marketplace that's doubling in size every 3 months how are you going to feed your great team, find a year to design and develop your great product, hire great marketing and communications and still find the time and money to lover everyone?

I just released an app. It sold 2 on the first day, and 2 the second day giving me a grand total so far of .. not much money.

Must be a slow burner! But I agree, this is probably better than a lot of apps do.

I love these reality-checks, but it's worth remembering it's natural to chase gold rushes. Remember the dizzying peak of Web2 in 2007?

The difference now is that a) many devs are doing it part time and at no risk to themselves b) unlike those Web2 companies pretty much all paid iPhone apps make some money ;)

The problem arises when people have a small amount of success then quit their day jobs only to find it's not repeatable. It's a shame when that happens, but then again... 3D Realms anyone? It happens to the best of us.

I say enjoy the ride, and don't take the App Store too seriously just yet unless you've got funding or a very long-term strategy.

I agree that if you just create an app without a promotion strategy, then don't be surprised when you don't sell that many copies!

Well there is someone making gobs of money on the App Store - Apple. They are going for the long tail model with their 30% cut off of every app across the board. I expect them to get rid of the top 100 lists and go for a Genius Just For You recommendation engine instead.

[...] Techcrunch reality check of the iPhone App Store as a hype was very interesting for me for one very reason: I even did not know it existed. Actually, I might have heard about it, but never used it or met anybody using it (probably, same as the iTunes store, it´s only working in the US). [...]
